Moving back to Dish, but have a few questions first

And I also was referring to the Joey 3. I have no idea why you're talking about with the crappy wire and the wireless, that has nothing to do with the actual speed of the boxes. Yes, the clients are nearly the same speed as the Genies and the Joey 3's are as fast as the Hopper 3's but in my extensive experience overall the Hopper 3/Joey 3 systems are noticeably faster than the Genie/Client systems.
You keep saying the client is as fast as the genie. But with a HS17 there is no actual Genie. So there is no way to compare speed from the server to the client

I was generalizing Genie systems to include an HR54/Client system as well as the HS-17/Client, which I'm not at all impressed with. The Genie system is a great system and a big improvement over most cable boxes but they just don't compare speed wise or feature wise to a Hopper3/Joey 3 system. IMHO they compare speed wise more to a Hopper 2/Joey 2 system.

I honestly question then how much time you have spent with the HS17 system. I agree the Hopper 3 blows the HR44/54 out of the water. And clients operate slower using that. However with clients attached to a HS17 I don’t see a speed difference doing 90% of tasks compared to the Joey 3

Thanks to all who replied to my questions.

Now for the most important question: Am I better off ordering online, ordering by phone, or does it make no difference?

Contacting your local Dish retailer if you have a good one will probably get you the best experience. :)

I've only installed a few HS17's because most customers don't want to pay that extra $7 for the first TV because as you know you have to have a $7 client for every TV with an HS17 and the first TV is free with the HR54. I was also not really impressed with the HS17 generally and in my experience with them I didn't notice much of a speed increase over the HR54 at all.

Hey Claude Greiner, are you reading this?

I don't feel like wasting any more time looking into this subject so do you know off hand if currently for a new customer DirecTV charges for all the clients if you have an HS17 installed or do you get one client free?

I wouldn’t go that far. Having several Joey 3’s and C61 and C61k I don’t see any speed difference between the two. I would say doing some tasks are faster on the C61k.

All I can say is that was my experience with the HR54 and C61k. I found them to be sluggish compared to the Tivo Roamio OTA + Mini that I was switching from, and when I moved to the Hopper3 and Joey 2.0, it was a welcome speed-up. Trick-play on the C61k was especially slow. There was a second or more delay when I hit pause, rewind, ff, etc. The Joey 2.0 is fast enough that I am not sitting and wondering whether my button press has been recognized by the STB. It is still not as fast as the Tivo Mini was, but it is usable, whereas my C61k was not. I had a tech check the Genie setup shortly after I got it installed, and everything checked out, but perhaps my experience was unusual. I certainly hope so for the sake of all the DirecTV customers out there. My parents' DirecTV setup includes a different, not UHD, client box, but it seems similarly sluggish to my eye.

I would defer to others in your market. Where I live, there are no resellers, so I just used the website. I will complain that the website changed my order from a Hopper3 to a HWS without telling me, and I had to talk to retention after the fact to get it fixed, so check each screen carefully as you go if you order online.

there is a difference from a HR54 client set up and a HS17 client set up. I noticed my clients speed up a good 25 percent after I got a HS17. Trick play and such we’re fine. TiVo is another animal. After that disaster of a premiere the Roamio Bolt Mini and Mini box run circles around everything

I have no experience with the HS17 to offer, but given the OP's stated experience with them, I think he will be satisfied with the Hopper and Joey 3 or 4k, which was his concern. Again, I truly hope DirecTV has improved the client response times since I was a customer about 18 months ago. It was very disappointing. Perhaps the new UI has helped too?

The OP's HS17 experience is similar to what I've seen.

And IMHO no, the new UI hasn't helped, in fact some say it's made it worse.

This I would 100 percent agree with. There UI and code is a disaster The CPU in the C61 clients is twice as fast as the CPU in the TiVo Mini. TiVo obviously made it work with hydra being extremely responsive on the Mini. Directv can’t figure it out
