Sinclair CEO warns Dish: Agree to deal or risk becoming irrelevant

Sports is just too expensive these days period. I wish all of the sports channels would be in a package or packages so the people that want them can buy them.
Quite frankly, go back to the premium service model. Put the RSNs on a preimum subscription and allow the subscriber to choose whether they want it.
This is exactly what Dish is attempting to do. Sinclair isn't going for it, hence the dispute.

Frankly, until other MVPDs follow suit to buck the current model, it'll be a tough road to hoe.

Go back to putting sports on free OTA channels like they used to be....premium sports crashed and burned allready
Quite frankly, go back to the premium service model. Put the RSNs on a preimum subscription and allow the subscriber to choose whether they want it. That's what we did when I was a kid for NESN and (what was then) Sports Channel New England. In fact, I was the only kid who at school who didn't get Disney Channel because my father preferred to see the Bruins and Whalers games.

But, Sinclair won't do that. Then they would be forced to actually provide content to entice people to subscribe. That's why NBC Sports Boston is gone and nobody cares. Outside NBA season, the channel is irrelevant. With NESN, we get Bruins in the winter and Red Sox in the summer. YES is the same way. Nets in the winter and Yankees in the summer. Instead let's create a Cubs only channel that is irrevelant for six months out of the year, then force subscribers to pay for it.

It's the same reason why I don't subscribe to the National Sports Pack, as I see no use for MLB Net, NHL Net, NFL Net, and NBA TV in the off season. Time to stop feeding the gluttonous pig. They only keep the control so long as people allow them to have it. I simply disconnected, keeping access to a few things and drastically lowering my TV viewing habits. The games are free to listen to on FM, and I can multitask in that manner. I sub to NESN to watch one or two Red Sox/Bruins games a week. That's it. I listen to the rest. I can clean my pool, take my dog for a walk, mow the lawn, go to the gym, wash the car, and whatever else all while still listening. I don't need to be glued to the couch.

I don't see it helping with RSN's. But where I think it may be an indicator is with my assertion Sinclair won't be able to keep locals off a provider when they insist on bundling them with RSN's. In other words, I don't think they can tie Locals that have specific FCC regulations on being carried with RSN's which do not and withhold the Locals. That would be not negotiating in good faith for the Locals,

I'm for that as well. I just don't see it going fully back to that model. I miss having away Bruins games on WSBK, Red Sox games on the various networks that used to carry the games, and the Celtics on WFXT.

This happened with the Meredith conflict. Here in Atlanta we lost the local CBS affiliate along with whatever other channels Meredith owns.

Now, politically, I wish that ALL spectrum not needed for National security would be sold and let the market decide the best way to allocate it, BUT, the broadcasters were given their spectrum for FREE in some vision of "for the people". They are dancing with the devil and the devil calls the tune. Those free spectrum channels should be sacrosanct and never used for leverage.

I can't see the court thinking any other way.

Like charlie said yesterday, if people want something and its not on DISH they will stream it online, legally... or in most cases pirate it.

These companies are killing themselves.
In Charlie's statement he also said that the teams will probably start their own streaming service. I am sure that is true and then I will buy the Atlanta Braves and the UGA Bulldogs and be happy.

In many cases, the teams don't have the rights to stream their games. In baseball for example, MLB controls the streaming rights. Unless that entire streaming model changes (which could happen in the future, but not anytime soon), we are stuck with the existing streaming options and their associated blackout restrictions.

The networks can stream, as NESN does with the Red Sox. The issue is that the current rules requires the viewer to login with a cable or satellite subscription. I think platforms like YouTube TV also carries some RSNs. Still, the viewer needs to subscribe to a MSVP. I can't just pay NESN to assess NESN Go without my Dish login or another login.

Yeah, I'd willing to admit most of those subs are from college football season.....can pick up Sling for cheap and add Pac 12 Network from a provider that does not have it. Will be interesting to see who stays beyond December.

It is interesting to note that Dish without Sinclair’s stuff is gaining some subscribers between satellite and streaming while ATT having made the deal with them is continuing to lose subs across the board.

I'm so glad I'll never be able to watch baseball again and have no other option unless they bring the promised Fioptics to our area.
