4K Events Discussion Thread

I thought the 4K was a little disappointing also. I was switching between the 4K feed, HD feed on NFL Network, and Network feed from my OTA adapter. The OTA feed seemed to look best to me.
I just recently got into the 4K game and last night's NFL broadcast was the first one I've had a chance to compare to OTA. I have to agree that my local Fox OTA looked better, almost as sharp and the colors were much brighter.

There is something to be said for the 4K TVs ability to upscale all video to 4K. I find it interesting when my Vizio display upscales the Fox video better than Fox upscales its 1080P video to 4K...

So how important is the HDMI cable that’s being used? I’ve been looking at the newest Apple TV 4K (thinking about upgrading from my current 3rd gen Apple TV). The article I was reading said I would need an HDMI 2.0 cable that doesn’t come with the Apple TV. It said it was required to get the 4K content. So does that apply to my Hopper as well? Because I have no idea if the HDMI cable I’m using is 2.0 or not. I can tune to channel 540 without any problems. But it makes me wonder if I’m getting the best possible picture.

If you have no issue with the picture you see you have a capable cable. Now, I replaced all of my HDMI cables from and to all of my equipment. I used Monoprice Certified Premium HDMI cables throughout. They work perfectly from my Hopper 3, AppleTV 4K, Roku Ultra, and Oppo UHD Blu-Ray player to my Denon x2300W AVR and from the Denon to my Vizio 4k Display.

Do you know if those cables were 2.0? I’m just wondering if that’s a sales gimmick or it’s fact.

Yes, they pass 4K perfectly if your cabling is 10’ or less. All of my cables are 6’ from the device to the AVR and 10’ from the AVR to the display.

My H3 is feeding my UHD TV via 25' of Monoprice cable, a wall jack feedthrough, and another 6' of Monoprice cable. No AVR.

Yes, that obviously works for you. I have seen many reports of issues with 25' cabling, including Monoprice, though. Sometimes folks that are going that far or further need to use fiber optic HDMI to get 4K to work. I was being cautious with my lengths. :)

I'm out of town until Saturday. Is there any way to set a timer to record 540-1 tonight on my H3? I tried DA but it said that channel does not exist.

I have a SlingBox Pro-HD but I had disconnected it temporarily and had not set it back up again.

I can see the 540 channels in DA. I've already got a timer set up for it for tonight that I initiated on the H3....

I'm watching the Steelers – Browns game and switching between my local FOX channel and the 4k channel (ch. 540). I have to say, the 4k picture looks kind of bland compared to the standard HD picture. Any idea why that would be?

Not sure about dish, and I apologize in advance to bring up another provider...

But via DirecTV there is a huge difference between local fox and the HDR "4K" feed .

I have 2 TVs in the same room and its night and day

I also have compared the 4K channel 540-01 with my local Fox 28 channel on my Sony XBR-65X900E TV.
The colors are brighter and more vivid on the local 1080i broadcast but the 4K broadcast shows clearer details on the closeups of the players faces.
When I change the TV HDR mode setting from Auto to HDR10 the colors get brighter and more vivid.
I suspect that this is because Dish is not broadcasting the HDR data.

If the game was in HDR that would make a difference but it is just in 4K and I am not impressed with Dish's 4K so far on anything.

I have the 75 inch version of the x900E and also a couple of 65 inch versions of the x900f. When connected to either the Hopper or 4K Joey, I have to go into the TV's picture settings and change the color space to BT.2020. Once I do this, the colors are then perfect. I don't know why Dish isn't sending the signal to change the color space, but it's clearly required since otherwise the picture is very gray and washed out even though it's extremely sharp. Changing to BT.2020 manually solves this issue for the Dish 4K channel. Hope this helps.

Action Menu > Picture Adjustments > Advanced Settings > Video Options > Color Space > BT.2020

As I mentioned in the other thread, Dish is either stripping the HDR data out of the 4K signal entirely or is doing an HDR -> SDR conversion. I will try what vipul128 has suggested, which if true implies that the HDR metadata is being stripped out but that the color space is incorrectly being flagged as BT.709 when it should be BT.2020. Again, assuming this is because the 4K Joey does not support HDR for whatever reason, and I guess maybe for people who had older/cheaper 4K TVs that don’t support HDR (Hopper 3 can’t do the conversion?)

Dish hypothetically has enough bandwidth to put on a 4K and a 4K HDR broadcast of the game, maybe they should consider that.
