Where it's Warm
Wall Street journal reporting the T-Mobile /Sprint merger will be approved tomorrow.

Looks like Dish will be in the cellular service business.

Good news for Dish, but only if Dish steps up to the bat and makes good contact. Also, Ergen should win CEO of the year award for pulling off this deal. He managed to make something huge from absolutely nothing, by inserting himself into someone else's merger.

He has "the lobes".

That will be a never for me unless T-Mobile ratings, service, quality, etc goes past Verizon someday.

Guess it depends where you live.

I moved from AT&T to T-Mobile, and my speed tests on AT&T were around 7.3 MB down, while on T Mobile I am getting around 72 Meg Down. I have been happy with the move.

Of course I understand in other areas this may not be the case.

Agreed. We moved from Verizon to T-Mobile last year. Call quality is much improved, virtually no dropped calls, and a nice improvement in network speed. Couldn't be happier.

I was a customer of Virgin Mobile a Sprint-owned reseller until yesterday when I was moved to Boost Mobile another Sprint-owned reseller. In the move my new plan is unlimited everything and tax included for the same price as my VM plan. I was not aware that Sprint agreed to sell Boost Mobile to Dish to get the merger done. So unless I jump to T-Mobile like so many seem to be I'll eventually be a customer of Charlie's 5G system. Not sure whether to be glad or sad.

Charlie's 5G system isn't even built yet and won't be ready for use for awhile. (It's supposed to reach a large percentage of Americans by 2023, I think.) And even once it's built, your current phone won't work with it.

In the meantime, everyone on Boost Mobile will continue to access the current Sprint network for now, and then the combined T-Mobile/Sprint network after the merger closes later this year. If anything, your coverage and speeds should improve. But DISH will be operating the Boost brand, so there will be new leadership in charge of billing, customer service, and Boost retail stores.

T-Mobile has good coverage in most of New England (excluding Maine). I left T-Mobile for a family plan on AT&T, only because at the time AT&T and T-Mobile were planning a merger. If I only knew that wouldn't have gone through, I would have forced her to come to T-Mobile instead of me joining her at AT&T

Wonder what DISH's future in 5G portends for the fate of the company's satellite TV business, as well as their low-cost streaming alternative Sling?

I also wonder if we won't see DISH tie up with another company with deeper pockets that wants to get into the 5G business, like Comcast or Charter. Obvious synergies there, both in their wireless ambitions but also their legacy TV products.

So what will the new DISH cell service be called I wonder? If we stay with the Australian animal names.... Wombat cell company? ;) Now where will DISH get retail shops to sell their phones now that they will have the Boost pre paid cell phones? That would mean a lot of rent every month to support the new sell company public retail stores. If only they had kept the Blockbuster stores they would have plenty of store fronts. Maybe Sprint , which won't exist anymore, will sell their leases to DISH since they won't need them .

Unrelated to Dish, but as a current sprint customer, I am thinking T mobile has better coverage could I see a change for the better once the merger happens with my phone service?

Amazon.

Boost already has a bunch of retail stores. I believe I read that those will transfer over to DISH as part of the transaction. (Surely they'll sell DISH and Sling services in those stores too, right?)

I wonder if they won't leverage the existing Sling brand and use it as the re-brand for Boost? "Sling Mobile". And then eventually the parent company changes its name from DISH to Sling. The DISH brand is kind of a dead-end, as it'll always be associated with a rooftop satellite dish, which will increasingly become the company's past, not its future.

I travel a lot and I have an MVNO on the AT&T network, along with a company-provided Sprint hotspot. There are dead spots on some parts of the interstate with the Sprint hotspot. I can get no Sprint or T-Mobile service at my in-laws' house.

Even with the Sprint/T-Mo merger, I don't see the combined coverage being anywhere near Verizon's or AT&T's.
