The YouTube TV Thread

After yet another bug with YTTV I said to heck with it and cancelled. But since they just billed me today for another month I am stuck with YTTV till March 24th.

Today I wanted to watch 'Mad Money' from my library and it gave me 'Shark Tank' instead. And strangely, at the bottom of the screen there was no position marker!

I tried it on my Sony Bravia X950G and also my Fire TV. Same thing happened. However, it worked fine on my laptop computer.

If they could model YTTV after TiVo, or any other decent DVR I would be very happy with it. But they chose to be different. May work for some, but it is not for me.

Best of luck finding something that works for you. FWIW: I find YTTV to have fewer bugs than Dish, DirecTV, or Tivo DVRs, but I expect my usage is probably different from yours.

I was thinking the very same thing. If someone is looking for reasons to not like a service, they can easily find them. I'm sure I could sign up for Dish Network and find a dozen things wrong or glitches, some of which have nothing to do with the provider itself, such as incorrect guide data from the channel, within the first month. I still have a basic familiarity with Dish mainly from helping my dad troubleshoot various issues over the years. And that doesn't include the times he just contacted the company directly due to an obvious equipment failure. And don't get me started on my local cable company, the last service I used before cutting the cord.

So yeah, good luck.

I have an old Tivo Series 3 with Lifetime service. I experience no issues at all with it.

My cable DVR was almost as good as my Tivo Series 3. Very rarely had problems. Compared to YTTV it was 10 times better. Would have kept it, but the cable company was charging $130 and jacking up the bill frequently.

I think we all see YTTV differently here.

I do not like 3 second video pauses about every 5 minutes. Maybe its my ISP's fault? Who knows. If it is the ISP's fault then there is nothing that either I or YTTV can do about it. In my location there are no other ISPs besides Comcast, which has data caps and high prices. Don't like the lack of channel numbers or the interface either.

When I go to watch a recording, I prefer not to see something else (like I did yesterday). This apparently was a bug in my TV's YTTV app, along with the Amazon FireTV app because the same recording worked fine on my laptop computer.

So I'll be just fine with my Tivo, renting DVDs from Redbox, and Amazon Prime.

Been on YTTV over a year now I've never had a pause or glitch that wasn't a wifi signal issue or ISP. The reason I say wifi is all 3 TV's use wifi. It's rare to have an issue but has happened once or twice in a year where the router needed a reboot.

Hey, whatever works for you. If the Tivo does the job and YTTV doesn't, then go with the Tivo. The one possible bump in the road I see for you is the Series 3 doesn't support MPEG4, and Comcast has been transitioning markets to MPEG4. One would assume they will eventually get to yours. You might want to invest in a newer model at some point:

Best of luck and thanks for the feedback on YTTV. I am sure it will be helpful to others who have similar needs.

My TiVo is just for OTA. Never had Comcast.

I will probably go with satellite for the Discovery channel, Fox Sports, and a few other channels that I watch a lot.

I don't think my internet provider (who also offers cable) is 'streaming friendly'. There are frequent intermittent problems with my connection.

Does it affect just live TV streaming or all video streaming (regular YouTube, Netflix, Prime, etc.) And have you done all the troubleshooting that's possible on your end? A few years ago I was having issues where my internet would intermittently drop out. Rebooting modem/router would provide a temporary relief. Working with my internet provider's tech support, it was finally suggested I update my router's firmware. Once I did that, no more problems. I've also had them come out to replace all the cable and connectors from the pole to my modem.

I haven't noticed the 3 second video pauses with Amazon Prime. Don't have Netflix.

I have 100 Mbps fiber internet and a relatively new router. Not much else I can do on my end.

Sorry, I misunderstood who your ISP was. Since you mentioned Comcast, I inferred that was your cable/internet provider. My parents had Fiber from their local electrical company in Jackson, TN, and the whole connection would drop every 5 minutes or so, just for a second. I had to help them troubleshoot it for months before they finally found the solution. What a pain it can be.

Youtube TV loses FOX / Sinclair RSN's-

The party's over. It's been a good ride, but I'm out. Half the reason I subscribe to a live TV service anymore is for my Fox RSNs.
Certain live sports are the only reason I subscribe to live tv as well these days. Fortunately, for me anyway, none of the are on RSNs at this point.

I do understand however.

On the bright side, with these services you can easily say, "Im out", as you arent locked in.

I'm fine paying for sports in general, but these single team college and pro regional channels need to be in a sports pack or ala-carte. I figured this was coming and I am fine with it. Some college baseball and softball is all I watch on FSN Oklahoma and most of that is getting pushed to ESPN+ or the teams live streaming packages. So cut them loose. Maybe drop the package price a few dollars or add on one the 3 services that everyone keeps asking for. Hallmark, A&E Nets or Viacom.

Assuming they go dark on YTTV as expected, this makes the 4th provider to drop Sinclair’s stuff. Dish, Sling and Fubo have already dropped them. From financial news, it seems YTTV and other streamers are losing money at current rates but feel pressure to hold the line on them.

I think I read that Comcast is expected to lose them in June too

"Upon further review," the grass may not be greener (or green enough) for me to jump to Hulu, as then I'll be losing my CW, PBS, AMC Channels, and the Tennis Channel (which is my "background noise" channel). Getting the A&E/History channels in their stead is a nonfactor for me.

I may stick it out with YTTV for a couple of months to see if I can get a few extra Padres and Clippers games via ESPN+.

EDIT: not to mention, it's only a matter of time before Hulu loses the Sinclair RSNs too.

For the record, cable/sat TV is not an option for me. I simply can't justify paying $125-$150/mo just to watch pro baseball (and a perennially losing team, no less). If the games were that important to me, I'd sign up for MLB.tv and watch my in-market games the next day.
