Full 8 TB now available on external EHD's

Bookworm, you may be the only one to have success with your 8TB (in total) disks. Did you check on your firmware?[

Sorry, all I can do is provide the documentation that it works and I'm not nuts! :laundry

4 images:
Picture of the size of disk 1: 6TB drive right off the screen (6TB in a disk enclosure - Amazon link also included
Picture of the size of disk 2: TB drive right off the screen (old WD 2TB MyBook)
Picture of Firmware version - still U927
Picture of the actual devices and how they are connected
(USB out is the blue cable on the far right
(Left hand USB port is the 2TB Drive)
(Far right USB port is the 6TB Drive)
So you look and, if my math is right, you can see that they total up to 8TB of space. It's only addition!

It could be the enclosure? It could be the cheap hub? Who know? Either way, I have 8tb of space!

Same firmware version. Huh.

Your 2TB looks exactly like my 1.5TB MyBook that fails to show up (or take over) for the Seagate. The MyBook is USB2, but my other 1.5TB drive that does show up is also USB2.

Yup, my 2TB MyBook is also a dirt old USB2 version. The enclosure is USB3 and I have the hub plugged into the USB3 port on the Hopper. No idea, but the hub, cable and enclosure are all USB3. Again, who knows?????

I have probably 9 or 10 Western 1-2TB drives that were originally used on my old 722 (it was 11 years old when I upgraded to a hopper system in 2018) and I have gotten most of those drives to work on the Hopper3, I did have to plug some of them in 3 or 4 times and sometimes reset the Hopper to get it to see the drives, but 80-85% of those drives work fine with the hopper. There were 1 or 2 that would not show up, but the rest worked fine.

Does Dish now officially support EHD’s larger than 2TB for the H3? My current one is filling up.

Okay, I have the potential to test this tonight after work. I have a bare 2 TB SATA drive and my Sabrent USB 3.0 SATA Docking Station which I can try connecting to see if I can verify bookworm370's experience.

I ordered a powered USB 3.0 hub from Amazon and I have an unused 1TB SSD laying around. I’m curious of the order of doing things. Should I plug in the new 1TB drive that’s never been connected to any Dish receiver first and get it formatted? Then unplug it, plug in the USB hub, add the original 2TB drive to the USB hub, and then add in the new 1TB drive to the hub?

Yup, just as you said.

And I've successfully proven that the limit (not on one but one 2 EHD) goes up from 7tb to 8tb (6+2) if you do it right and have the right hub. But the official limit for a single EHD is 7TB which is stupid because there is not a single manufurer that makes a 7TB HD. You can get 5's, 6TB, 8TB drives but the entire industry seem to have skipped over the 7TB mark. So dish putting a limit of 7TB on an EHD really doesn't make a lot of sense to me, at least.

It worked. I connected my existing (2TB) and new (1TB) EHD’s to the Hopper via a powered USB 3.0 hub from Amazon. Both show up in my “other devices” DVR menu. I now have 3TB to work with.

The Hopper took a little bit to “figure out” what was going on. And I had to reboot the device before it finally (with some delay) listed them both.

When i got up this morning, the new EHD was missing from the list. I unplugged it from the USB hub and then re-plugged it right back in and it immediately showed up again. The EHD is a SSD and doesn’t have its own power supply. Do EHD’s need their own power supply to remain “live”/visible to the Hopper?

yes, they have to have their own power supply

I wonder if plugging the EHD into the “powered” USB outlet will work. The USB hub I bought has 1 outlet that is powered which is Intended for phone charging.

As I mentioned in the U934 thread, my 2 TB and 6 TB EHD drives won’t play together. They show up individually, just not at the same time.

Right now we’re watching “Maine Cabin Masters” so I have to stop playing around… ;)

I just checked,

I got upgraded to U934 and both my 6TB and 2TB EHD's show up just a before. I think it may be your powered hub. Unplug it and use it as an unpowered hub. When I tried my old hub and had power plugged in, it would not work. If both of your EHD's have external power, then you don't need a powered hub so just unplug the power and reboot and see what happens.

I believe an SSD should work even if it is not powered by it's own power supply, since they draw such a little amount of current. Some low power laptop drives will operate on the amps put out by the Hopper, and an SSD should draw even less current than low power laptop drives do.

SSD's are not recommended for internal drives because of wearing out the chips but external storage is exponentially less disk intensive than internal storage.

I have a 6TB with built in USB3 hub and a 1.5TB drive. They only show up one at a time just like Foxbat's. As one of my tests, I unplugged the 1.5TB drive that was in the (obviously powered) built-in USB hub and plugged it directly into the H3 and rebooted. No change. I only get one disk at a time. :crying

The last I heard, the official limit supported is now 7TB. (And before anyone asks, the limit for an EHD with a Wally is now 4TB.)
Dish may be raising the limit for supported external hard drives because it looks like external desktop hard drives are no longer available in sizes smaller than 3TB. I need additional capacity :).
Well, I don't know what they changed, but last week my Hopper started to recognize my 6TB EHD and my 2TB EHD for a full 8TB!

The trick I found out is to get a USB3 hub and make sure the larger one is the first in the chain. If it doesn't see the 6TB one first it won't see the 2TB.

So I'm happy now, I can have my mass storage and Christmas movies for my wife online without cable swapping!

Just an FYI.
If Dish has raised the limit that is supported for external hard drives to 7TB, it is impressive that you have gotten the Hopper to recognize 8TB. I am going to try :). Thank you !
