Sick of the Disputes

Just wait until the broadcasters fully implement ATSC 3.0’s conditional access system. That is how they are going to replace the lost retransmission fees.

Each station will probably have a overcompressed 480i “barker” channel playing just weather and local news. The rest will be pay TV.

I don't think so. I believe they are gearing up to sell an extra cable type package of programming for $50 a month is what I have read, but the regular channels & diginets will stay. After all the public would not go along with regular OTA network programming as pay. OTA was struggling for years. they got a boost with diginets and retransmission fees, but I do not think they would jeopardize what they have now. With 3.0 they will have a lot of extra room for selling a package. The airwaves are run by the FCC and supported by taxpayers. The Network has a lot on competition anyway without ticking off the public.

It all starts with the belief that a "free" method must be available for the government to contact the populace. It started with radio and then TV. The government created the monopolies of the DMA control of local channels. It is also the job of the government to control monopolies. The government has only done half the job.

The broadcasters argue that local programming is critical to the industry. I bet that if checked, most people don't care where the programming comes from. Locals news is highly and better available on the internet.

If the government allowed Dish and others to offer fill-in locals during disputes, the whole argument on the value of locally generated programming would die and competition would balance out the system.

With sports programming coming alive I wonder how the networks view Scripps demands and blackout? When Scripps pulled the plug not only did Dish customers lose out but the networks instantly lost mucho viewers and I can't imagine they're happy about it. When the networks negotiate commercial time costs with an advertiser it's based on a projected X number of viewers but that number has been slashed by Scripps just as baseball, golf, and basketball are going live. I would not be surprised if at some point the collective networks start putting some pressure on Scripps to get their channels back on the air. Why the FCC ever allowed this station hoarding is beyond me. :rolleyes

My father dropped Comcast for DirecTV Now which became att Now and price shot up. He switched to Youtube TV and now it's going up. Streaming TV is going to meet satellite at some point.

Perhaps, but it still has a long way to go before it comes close. Even at $65, YTTV is still about $50 cheaper than what it would cost me to get channel & feature parity anywhere close on Dish or DirecTV or Spectrum for 4 TVs with no contract. AT&T TV Now is even $10 cheaper (currently), and only for the base channel package which has fewer channels than YTTV, but still a good option. Sling is missing the locals in too many markets and has too many restrictions at this point. Hulu+Live is about the same price as YTTV when you try to match the DVR capacity. Here are the advantages of streaming solutions that I see:

-Unlimited Cloud DVR
-No equipment fees (yes you buy the devices, but you probably need those anyway to watch other streaming services, and they are cheap)
-No separate Local or Regional Sports channel fees

Even if it cost the same as an equivalent channel package from Satellite or Cable providers, I would still choose YTTV due to these advantages.

IMHO, YTTV really needs to come out with a skinnier package in the $30-$40 range like the old Welcome Pack/Family Pack from Dish, but I suspect the channel owners have learned not to allow that after working with Dish for all these years.

So where are you going, if I may ask?
Comcast. It's far from perfect, but I have internet through them so I can bundle and save some money, and at least they have all the channels I want. I'd love to "cut the cord" (I put it in quotes because going to a streaming service like Sling or YTTV is just cable by another method), but nobody has all the channels that my wife and I want.

I will miss a lot of things about Dish, especially the Hopper 3, but between the missing channels and the overcompressed signal, I've had enough. I may be back some day, but for now, I need to go with a provider that meets my needs.

I wish the FCC would have never allowed OTA TV stations to charge. After all if the person is lucky enough to get an OTA signal, those channels are free. They should have stayed free on cable & satellite. If so, the greed from the TV corporations would not be an issue. It is especially bad during COVID. These TV Corps do not have much of a heart. Sometimes, I wonder why anyone would watch them.
LoCast has demonstrated
OTA can be rebroadcast.
Just that it has to be done
NOT FOR PROFIT

Yep, and cable/sat providers should be able to charge for the actual cost to provide those local channels without the additional fees that the locals want to charge.

The locals all got their license for a free, ad-supported service.

If I went with YT TV, it would be $50 less /per month, but with less channels (several that are liked). However, I have cap on internet data whereas my father does not. Because of the amount of TV watched here, I would probably have to allocate the Comcast overage. It was $50 extra / month until last month. Now it is an extra $30 / /month.

Before, it would be equal in price with comcast unlimited internet add on cost. Now, it would be about $20 less, but again, there are some channels it does not have some channels I like that Dish has. One more thing is that it works when internet is out unless there is a big storm going on which doesn't affect the signal at my house much... just occasionally.

I would say the Dish cost is worth it because of the channels included that are not on YT. I like the Hopper3 /Joey system also. That being said, the YT TV interface is not too bad and it beats the heck out of att direct interface.

I'm sure the truth is in the middle, like it usually is. But the way I look at it, Dish now has open disputes with HBO (Time Warner), the Fox RSNs (Sinclair), NFL Network (NFL), and now various locals (Scripps). The common denominator with all four of those disputes is Dish.

I know everyone has channel disputes, but nobody has as many, or as long-lasting, as Dish. How long has it been since HBO went away, a year or more? I know they are "fighting to keep prices low." They love to portray themselves as the customer's friend, but the reality is that they are a for-profit corporation just like all the companies they are in disputes with. All of them are doing what they can to maximize their revenue. There's nothing wrong with that, but as a consumer, I have to decide what best meets my needs. For years it's been Dish, but not anymore. It doesn't matter how low their prices are if they don't carry the channels I want. I'm fortunate enough to live in an area with choices and be almost to the end of my contract.

I'm making the call tomorrow morning.

I too understand that they are a for profit corporation, but this common statement that they fight to keep prices low is crap. Even if they have signed contracts, they still raise the programming prices & all of the "fees". This virus has hurt many people with the illness and/or the loss of income. I was fortunate enough to keep working, but I lost an annual increase because of it. Yet, dish continues to raise their pricing despite the loss of customers and the loss of programming.

You can get unlimited data with Comcast, it is called xFi Advantage, it it $15-20 a month ( depends on your market) which includes the modem rental, I have had it for about a year and a half now.

I never really minded the disputes when I was with Dish because they were still less expensive than DirecTV and Spectrum/TWC, and the platform was better, which was the clear indicator that they were actually somewhat successful in bargaining hard and passing some of those savings on to the customer as well as investing in the technology. That said, the increases over time have been way higher than what is acceptable from all parties involved. I realize this is largely due to pro and college sports, and that is a big part of what people want to watch, but it affects everyone, like one of the worst forms of The Tragedy of the Commons ever. If you want to watch a cheaply made show on the Disney Channel, you have to subsidize the expensive sports shows that other people want to watch. How does that make any sense?

I actually read about that the other day. Not sure if it is in my market, but I run my own modem and router by choice.

I did also but I looked at it this way, $15 vs $50, and since I was always over the 1TB limit it was worth it, this month alone we are at 1.5TB.

Goodbye. The fact that whatever ship you find will be in the same state soon should indicate where the problem really lies.
It is a good point. The end game is about how much money they expect to get per household. They will get that amount by hook or by crook. It's just a matter of time.

Dish has more disputes than every other provider combined...thanks for the heads up on where the problem is
Prove it.

Not even remotely true. Quite some time back, someone posted here a list of disputes and Dish wasn’t even the worst.
