Philip Rivers Hall of Famer? Yay or nay?

I say nay. I’m admittedly tougher on the criteria to get in (especially football and baseball), and I just don’t feel like he passes my HOF eye test. I certainly wouldn’t be surprised if he got in based on his metrics, but I think he is borderline at best.

Nay here. He has the same issue as Matthew Stafford, lack of consistency. Unlike Stafford, however, he has had some good teams around him and he still failed. Some games he looked brilliant and others awful. The fact that even in a game winning situation he refused to run a QB keeper isn't a trait befitting an HOF quarterback either, in my opinion. Now, having said all that he will probably get elected simply because the voters overrate stats and not performance (Yes, there is a difference).

No from me. Good QB but not up to HOF standards

Just curious, how much of your opinion for him getting in or not has to do with the fact he played on the West Coast and a team (SD) that isn't seen or heard from very often ?

In my opinion, I would say ... No, he's not a HOF'er, but as I mentioned, he didn't get the same viewing as many others .
Brady, Rodgers, Manning (same grouping a little older) Big Ben, all are seen on TV every week ...
Rivers, not so.

I don’t feel like the NFL is like the other 3 “big 4” North American sports in that there’s a discrimination against a West Coast and/or small market team (look no further than Green Bay). There are no late night games, there’s only 16 games a week (max), and because of that if you’re a fan, it’s pretty easy to follow teams and individual players. Do some teams get more exposure on national TV? Obviously the answer to that is yes. But I’ve seen enough of Rivers and the Chargers over the years to render my opinion (and I’m not saying that opinion is correct- it’s just my opinion).

I keep seeing Rivers resume compared to his contemporaries- Ben Roethlisberger and Eli Manning. Big Ben is a no-brainer HOF selection IMO. He’s got the stats, regular season success and 2 Super Bowl wins. Eli is a more interesting case. Not only has he won 2 Super Bowls, he’s come up big many times on the ROAD in the postseason. He has proven that he was a clutch performer. A clutch performer carries a lot of weight with me in these HOF debates. However, (and this an extra LARGE HOWEVER) he was only a .500 QB in the regular season. I couldn’t in good conscience put Eli in the HOF OVER Rivers. For that reason, they’re BOTH a nay for me.

Also, a lot of the perception goes with how well the Team did.
The Chargers haven't been a team that gets into the Playoffs all that much ....
While its true, if your a fan, there are now ways to watch your team(s), but if you watch football and are not a huge fan, you may or may not have a good idea of what hes done in his career.

Whether or not he's seen a lot of TV exposure has nothing to do with his accomplishments, or lack thereof. Those guys not only got to Superbowls but won them. Rivers playoffs record, 5-7 with only one Conference championship game appearance, in 2011, which he lost to Brady. He was 19 for 37 for 211 yards with 2 ints and zero tds. His career record is 59.4% passing completion, 16td, 10int in postseason play. That record and post season performance is not HOF worthy.

All very good points, but let me say this: Philip Rivers forever gained my respect playing on a torn meniscus in frigid Foxboro in the 2007 AFCCG. Does that alone make him HOF worthy? Of course not, but he proved what a tough SOB he was.

Thank you ...
You did the work I was going to look up next.

The Pro Football hall of fame lets too many people in. They are not nearly as selective as the Baseball Hall of Fame.

The Football hall only lets 5 in a year, I believe ....
I am happy that they are selective ... in some sports it doesn't take much to get in.

In baseball you have to have so many votes, some percentage, might be 75% ... 75 % of WHO ?
Who knows who votes with the MLB HOF.
Are there 10 people or 100 people or a 1000 people ?

The Heisman is not a HOF but that too has WAY too many people voting.

Football has a group of 48 people voting each year ...
I think there should be requirements for how long you have been in the baseball scene, do you still watch baseball, some people have been voting forever.
So once a writer retires they have 10 years before they are kicked out.
