NCIS

The most recent episode, especially in light of recent events, is truly disturbing and not in keeping with the series' normal standards.

Weird, last nights episode was the Sloane leaving episode, not the one in the guide. Anyone else?

I saw somewhere today that NCIS has been renewed for another year.

There was talk of it ending and Mark Harmon was going to retire, they said without Harmon they would end it ...
Harmon said that he would do occasional episodes next year to keep NCIS going.

I haven't seen anything official about Harmon cutting back, but it was rumored.

If you remember JAG, which is in the same "fictional universe" as NCIS, the last few episodes were setting up the protagonists to get promoted and become guest stars, introducing new characters, played by lower paid actors. CBS passed and cancelled the show.

However, JAG generally hovered in mid 20th place and never was higher than 15th, and was doing its second year in the "Friday Night Death Slot", ranking in at 59th place. NCIS has been no lower than 3rd place, often 1st, for over a decade and a half, and shows no sign of losing viewers, even though the consensus is that the show has lost its edge. I think CBS would try to keep the show alive, even if Harmon quit.

How to work Gibbs in to some but not all episodes will be a challenge. How a disgraced former officer needs to show up four or five times a year to help out is a stretch, even in the total suspension of reality world of NCIS.

I think we have seen the price Harmon is extracting for continuing the show.

- Do an arc with him as an extreme dog lover, as a statement on his split with Pauley Perrette.

- Work his real life wife, a fine, but long forgotten actress, into an arc.

I think next season's basic plan is fairly obvious.

"The team", now run by McGee, has a "murder of the week". These will be interposed with cuts to unrelated material of Gibbs working, first on the Pam Dawber arc; and, if he will, later arcs with him as some sort of unofficial player in whatever secret agent stuff Bishop, David, and maybe Fornell and other past characters, are involved in. All the time with CBS watching the increasingly Harmon free show's ratings. If they can pull down a top 15 or so, they will be fine.

I am so glad that Bishop is finally leaving the show!

I was hoping for a shot to the head like Kate got and Gib's ex wife got, :laser but this will work too. I have never liked her character on the show and the only time I thought she looked even remotely attractive was when she was dressed like a prostitute for one episode. She was so mousy and annoying that I never warmed up to her period. Lets hope her replacement will be some kick ass female like Ziva David. Enough with the dishwater blonds with no personality like Bishop and Jack.

Mondays, for the first half of the season, is a challenge for any action/adventure type series, due to the NFL. The traditional counter programming has always been lighter fare, with viewership that skews female.

However NCIS LA has done OK against the much better Sunday night NFL line up, with ratings in the mid-20th place for the whole time.

CBS is probably looking to boost its Hawaii spin off, which does not look that promising to me.

Yeah, if I were to put together a list of potential leads for NCIS:Hawaii, Katrina Law wouldn't even be in consideration. She is, in my opinion, all wrong for that type of roll. Heck, Diane Neal (Abigail Borin, the Coast Guard lady) would have been a much better choice. Time will tell.

NCIS Hawaii is just another Hawaii Five-O in sheep's clothing.

I fear you are right. While the NCIS franchise makes one suspend disbelief to a great deal, particularly the late New Orleans show, it is nothing compared to Hawaii Five-O. Plot holes you can drive a semi through and insane stunts without any logical basis.

Every NCIS show is based on the idea that NCIS is really some sort of mega agency that has these vast responsibilities.

NCIS - Really sailors and marines living around DC get murdered at a rate that would make Chicago blush, but this leaves plenty of time for spy smashing.

NCIS LA - Really the agency is full time spy smashing, but finds time to gather a carefully PC crew, and has an office in a suburban house.

NCIA NO - Really the agency is about political corruption in the south, with plenty of time to pontificate about social issues having little to do with the Navy (which is rarely even mentioned), and has an office on Bourbon Street.

I wonder what the Hawaii angle will be?
