4K Events Discussion Thread

I watched the OSU Michigan game on Fox Sports channel 540-01 in 4K and Dish Fox channel 28 in 1080i. As usual channel 540-01 was less vivid in color but the resolution was excellent. I hope that Dish will eventually be able to broadcast the games using HDR since Fox Sports does the broadcasts with HDR. My hope is that when Dish releases the new Joey 4 that they start broadcasting more content with HDR. To date the only content they have done with HDR was the Olympics and the current 4K Joey was unable to view that content.

Even though I am an OSU alumni I have to admit that Michigan outplayed the Buckeyes. Hopefully the Buckeyes can learn from their mistakes. There is no excuse for that many penalties.

Mrs. Foxbat and I are home from Thanksgiving vacation. We were listening to the ND - Stanford game via the Fox Now app driving back, and if I had thought about it, I probably could have found it on FM or SiriusXM.

We got home about five minutes before the half and was able to jump right into the Dish 4K channel with no Error 890 malarkey. That’s the first time that’s happened for me. :)

The 890 Error is still a thing, but at least you can direct-tune or get there from the Guide without the error. I got the error when I accidentally did a Channel Return and tried the Channel Return to go back to 540-01.

BTW, I didn’t see this in the 4K Events No Discussion thread, was it a last-minute decision on Fox Sports’ part or Dish’s part?

It did come in late. I saw it elsewhere but neglected to report it. Mea culpa….

Dish is broadcasting the NFL Cowboys Saints game using HDR on channel 540-04.

540-01 has the 4K game without HDR
540-04 has the 4K game with HDR.

The colors are very vivid on 540-04 but it is much darker. The menus are very dark.

The non-HDR channel 540-01 is much brighter.

540-01 is typical washed out Dish 4K, and 540-04 is crazy over-saturated. Why on Earth can Dish not get colors right on these 4K broadcasts?!? :facepalm

Anyone else get a blackout error when you tried to go to 540-01? It forced me to go to NFLN (154) instead.

I was able to go to 540-04 successfully though.....
I watched the entire game on 540-01, but I must since my 4K TV in non-HDR (2015 vintage).

I am watching the 540-04 HDR channel right now. They are showing the preliminaries of the Utah St/San Diego St game. Very, very saturated so far. The commercial I am looking at right now is not so bad. Then the next one is terrible. They will get this fixed. We’ve been here before.

The colors on 540-04 are very vivid but still too intense. If they could average the lower color from 540-01 non-HDR with the intense color of 540-04 HDR they would have a winner. Unfortunately that is not possible.
I wonder why HDR makes all of the Dish menus so dark. If you hit info or Guide when watching 540-04 you will see how dark all of the menus are.

I loaded up the game on my Roku and it looks just fine in HDR.

I have a Roku 4 connected to HDMI 2 on my Sony XBR900E TV. When I watch Fox Sports the picture looks great and the colors all look great. The resolution is 3840x 2160 4K but my TV reports that HDR is in auto mode and it is off. When I change HDR mode from auto to HDR10 the colors get over saturated and the colors look like Dish channel 540-04.
So it is strange that your Roku is doing HDR and my Roku 4 is not.

My Sony TV has the Fox Sports app. My TV reports that as HDR but the video pauses when I attempt to check it.
I notice that sometimes too with my hard wired (ethernet ) Amazon 4K fire stick . But I blame my ISP

O wait i was talking about random video pauses when trying to watch
