Does external drive require external power? This used to be a requirement, but external powered drives are harder to find.

I still question the added load on the power supply. Might shorten the life.

Which model of WD? I use WD My Book now, but do not see them available anymore in 1 TB size. The 2TB is twice the price of the passport or element.

You could buy a separate enclosure. Or plug an EHD into a self powered USB hub.

Bought a Western Digital 8TB Elements Black for my Tablo in 2019, still going strong.

Bought it on Prime Day then for $100, now $164, still a good price for the size and comparing it to others.

Also plug and play, hooked it to the Tablo, ready to go after a few minutes.

My only issue, is when I connected it to the Orlando market, it blanked all the recordings from the Detroit market, not the HD fault.

I had every episode of the Beverly Hillbillies saved on it, gone, but now it is on Pluto, so a moot point.

:thumbup on the Western Digital Elements drives. I have two of them. An 8TB and a 12TB. I purchased them on sale from Amazon as well. IIRC I got price drop notifications from slickdeals for both of them.

Looking at the DISH website, they are not listing powered as a requirement any longer.

Check Dish's website first. Some posts are talking about drives that are not compatible like SSD's and EHD's above 7TB.
