Why was this bad, unless it was against your team? Again, what are you trying to fix here?
I don't know if I'd say it is "bad", just that it is unfair to the defense. Has nothing to do with any particular team, I don't like it in any game. If 3 or 4 offensive guys get behind a runner and push him down the field, the offense gets the benefit of it. If 3 or 4 defensive players get together and push the runner back 5 yards, the ball is placed where the runner quit making progress.
No, it's not rugby, but it is a scrum that only the offense can benefit from. I just don't enjoy it, I think it changes the game in a way that I don't like.
Incidentally, my physics professor made it very clear to us that pushing and pulling are the same exact thing, just depends on which side you're standing on as to what it's called. For example: the trailer ball on a truck is actually pushing on the front of the trailer coupling.
