If they get there way it will be very soon. They want ATSC 1.0 out of the way so they can force ATSC 3.0 (with DRM intact) down our throats.![]()
The only audience that really matters to them is those who subscribe to cable providers or via streaming platforms. They go where the money is. Who cares about some people watching OTA in rural areas? They don't pay the bills. If they go to a closed platform, it'll reduce their audience count anyway.My feeling is that ATSC 1.0 is going to be around for a while. The Nextgen coalition want the FCC to sunset ATSC 1.0 broadcasts by 2028 in major markets but I don't believe the FCC will do that. They are more likely to allow broadcasters to turn off their ATSC 1.0 simulcast at their own discretion. But with the lack of devices that support ATSC 3.0 I don't see many broadcasters doing this. They would be shutting down their audience and I don't see them doing that.
