Deal with NPS to "save" distants on DISH!

Thanks for the info CeeCee. What channel numbers did you punch in? I still get nothing when entering 5735. Using DISH 500 with 508 DVR. vasto

5733/5734 for CBS
5735/5736 for ABC
5737/5758 for Fox

Until those channels are activated you won't get anything. So just keep checking back.

For some unknown reason, I do get 5731-5738. However, when I compare PQ with the SF spot beams on 110 and the Atlanta national beams on 110, the 110 feeds are vastly superior. Let's hope that the new service can improve this.

First about grandfathering - once you no longer received distants from Dish (for whatever reason - your choice or their court order) you are no longer grandfathered - it cannot be transfered. You must live in a white area for each network - or get a waiver - or use the RV exemption to get distants with another provider.

I have a theory why Dish is not allowing most of those who get or can get locals to get distants thru NPS.
One interpretation of the law can be: You may not receive distants if your distants provider is able to give you locals.
But another interpretation can be: You may not receive distants if your provider is able to give you locals.

Even though Dish is separate from NPS, they may be taking the broadest possible interpretation, by saying they cannot allow distants on their box, as your provider, if you are receiving locals, even if an outside source is providing the distants.
I think if that is the case, it will help them in court to allow what they are doing. I have to believe they talked about that and decided it was more risky to allow distants with locals, than to just allow distants if no locals were available.

I do not see that as working "in concert", but rather making a decision what they will allow on their equipment. In fact NPS could well say they want to give more people distants, and Dish won't let them. Again, that would certainly not be working in "concert."

Tampa

did they (NPS) ever turn on your DNS? In the thread you started about how to go about getting the Distants from NPS you said in a post that you were abel to order the DNS even though you recvd LiL from E*.

They do not qualift you untill they have your phone number. If your phone number is not in there system they will NOT qualify your address. If you requested DNS on line they send you an e-mail if you are on the phone with the CSR they tell you to call your provider. This is complet Bullsh!t. If they are not working with dish then they should qualify you based on your address. Your phone number not being in the system should have nothing to do with them selling you distants!

This sounds to me like they are singing beautiful music together to me. If someone does NOT have Dish Network it should make no difference on whether or not they can receive those distant network channels. It should not matter on their Dish Network status.

Hi Folks,

I live in a rural area of central West Virginia and can receive ONLY ONE local channel (CBS) over the air. Can you imagine! There are only 2 ABC affiliates in the entire state, both of which are 120 to 150 miles south of me. It has been a delight to have been able to receive ABC from LA. I find it absurd that is is now illegal for DISH to provide me with any ABC service.

I was delighted to find your site and subsequently just signed up (couple hours ago) for the 2 networks I am eligible for (FOX and ABC) from DNS. Apparently it will take some time for the channels to be activated. But my immediate concern is that I don’t see any evidence that channels 5735 to 5738 appear on my DISH “all channels” guide. I have a dish 500 system so I can receive signals from Echostar VII at 119 ° west. Are any other of you smart folks with a DISH 500 receiving ABC/ FOX successfully?

Thanks! VASTO

Welcome to Satelliteguys. Being in WV myself I understand what it is like to not be able to pickup local network channels on antenna or satellite until they were added in 2003. If you "move" only your physical address to an address that would pickup Charleston/Huntington WV locals then you would be able to get them from a SuperDish or Dish1000 (even a Dish500 will get them in for you if you do not need the AT180 package if you realign your dish to pickup 119/129).

Well, we know the reason you get 5731-5738.

It's the same reason you get Atlanta locals on 110 as well as the San Francisco Spotbeam.

Your running a hacked system.

Still waiting for activation from NPS (20 hours now). I see frequent reference to LiL. Forgive my ignorance. What is this abbreviation for?
Local broadcasts over air maybe? Thanks!

vasto

LIL stands for Locals-in-Local. Providing local channels in the market (DMA) that you are in.

I received NPS yesterday - everything was great. This morning I have lost my FOX stations. Have they done something to pull out? I have called all american direct and they said all they did was activate. If I have trouble I have to call another number and on that number you can't talk to anybody. What do I do?

I have the NPS stations still this morning but the Altanta ABC is still suffering from lost signals, video and audio not in sync. The SF feeds of Fox and ABC are poor quality. I realize that this whole thing was done quickly and I'll give it a while longer for them to fix it(if they can), but the quality of these feeds are no where near what we were getting with NY and LA. Disappointing to say the least.

I'm getting the sense that the NPS distants are pretty much a bust if you can get or already have LiLs. It appears the PQ is no better than most people's locals, so what incentive is there to pay NPS for them.

It sounds like NPS distants are better than having no networks at all but that's about it. Hmmmmm.

Finally got FOX and ABC. Bravo Charlie! I hope Murdoch’s blood pressure is now at dangerous levels. Interesting to read Rupert’s bio at Wikipedia. Make up your own mind.

Noticeable multi path interference on ABC/ SF but still picture quality is quite acceptable. Other 3 channels a little better. Family delighted that we’ll not lose “House”, “Lost”, “Grey’s” and other shows we have come to follow.

Will see how long this fix from NPS will last before courts screw it up. Still would prefer better quality from LA/ NY.

Tomorrow everyone should still call 1-888-267-1127 and leave messages for your senators and congressmen to support Bill 4067. I received a written reply from my Congressman last week saying they would support bill if introduced. It’s now introduced so I will contact all three again.

I guess we have to take what we can get at this point but the quality of the new stations is a BIG DROP from what DISH was providing. But perhaps that was part of the arrangement - don't make the signal too good or the customers won't return to DISH when all of the court battles are over. Here's how it shakes out on my TV:

5731 WXUA NBC Acceptable quality
5732 KNTV NBC Poor quality
5733 WGCL CBS Very Poor quality - bad ghosting
5734 KPIX CBS Poor quality -ghosting
5735 WSB ABC Good quality
5736 KGO ABC Poor quality - ghosting
5737 WAGA FOX Good quality
5738 KTVU FOX Poor quality - ghosting

I could live with these signals not being the ultimate in digital broadcasting but I used to get this kind of signal when I didn't want to bother adjusting my "rabbit ears." Seems like there is no excuse for sending out such a poor quality of signal to such a large and CAPTIVE audience.

Steve

On the other hand dont make the signals look so poor that it gives people the idea of going to DirecTV. My DirecTV NY and LA signals look great. So if I were going to make a snap decesion to drop my Dish Network account and simply add a few more DirecTV recievers to my house it would be because the picture quality of the NPS stations. . . .

It would also be so easy already having a secondary DirecTV account but I will wait and give NPS a chance to get its act together. Besides I like my Superstations. If DirecTV really wanted to lure people from Dish they would offer WWOR, WPIX, KTLA ect but they dont.
