I hear the fat lady warming up. Price, performance and now capacity!

Toshiba Unveils 51GB HD DVD

Toshiba continues to improve HD DVD storage capacity. At the HD DVD Promotion Group's press conference this evening, the company announced it has developed 51GB triple-layer rewritable and ROM media.

This capacity is up from the company’s previous explorations of a higher-capacity 45GB triple-layer disc. Currently, HD DVD maxes out at a 30GB dual-layer disc. This capacity is 1GB greater than rival Blu-ray Disc, which tops out at 50GB.

The company spoke in terms of getting the disc approved as part of the HD DVD spec by the end of 2007.

I am still holding out for Blu-Ray, but it's very sad to see a Sony Blu-Ray drive for the PC going for $700+ at the local Best Buy. Ugh! Oh well...still waiting for a sub $200 HD DVR or Blu-Ray player...first one to bring it to the market gets my $$$.

first Blue Ray and HD DVD combo player by LG

Looks like LG is annoucing first HD DVD and Blue Ray player at CES
(just saw a report on local news WGN in Chicago...)

Yep. And the Blu-ray camp has commented on work on up to 8 layers. Figure 25 per layer. Since they start closer to the surface, they have room for more layers. In the capacity race, HD-DVD can never win.

That doesn't mean final victory for BD. We'll see where things go. Nothing is over yet.

As an HD DVD owner since early May 2006, I'm not sure I'm ready to agree Blu-ray is dead, but I do like the fat lady warming up anology. :D

At CES 2006 the question was would Toshiba even push ahead with an HD DVD launch and, if so, why bother?

AT CES 2007, were have combo players, combo discs, new & better HD DVD hardware, hints of new, cheap Chinese players, strong list of new movie titles . . . in other words, HD DVD isn't going away anytime soon.

On the other hand, the Blu-Ray launch - delayed hardware, sub-par, faulty first player, incredibly bad quality first software releases, more hardware delays, and finally the PS3 release with less than 25% of the number of promised players - should be a case study at Business Schools for how NOT to launch a new product release for a long time to come. :hatsoff:

The Sony drive for the PC is not just a player, it can write BLU-ray single and dual layer discs. So you would expect it to be more.

Also today LionsGate made it clear they will exclusively be supporting Blu-ray. For a format that is "over" Vurbano it seems to have a lot more movies comming out then HD-DVD, most of which are Exclsuive. I guess the Studios disagree with your assessment.

Small nitpick, but I got Chronos on HD DVD already. Only cost $15 on Buy.com on Black Friday....

umm, too bad you listed some titles that are already hd-dvd. we were soldiers and goodfellas are 2 that come to mind at first glance.

Ahh matey. What a wonderful list. Looks like Vurbano got a little excited, but Havn't you HDDVD peoples always said that 30gb was plenty. Well, I guess its time to change your story again.

BTW that is a great list,. DONT FORGET HARRY POTTER...Cant wait til may for PotCB.

You know. DAMN. I just had to post again over that list. And the fact that there are a couple HDDVD's on that list, does not make it any less great.

But if i was in your situation, being that I had to find some way to somehow dismiss a list like that, I would have pulled out all the stops as you did to make sure i found some movies on that list that were already on HDDVD, or weren't exclusive, or that somehow would have a disk defect (Weinstein), or that were on BD-25, were shipped with an ugly box, etc etc. Happy times all!

Guys, we have plenty of "My technology is better than yours" crap as it is. Please keep this thread civil.

I count less than 10 titles on that list (not including Spiderman) that I have would have to have. I don't need G.I. Jane. I do need The Godfather which will come on HD-DVD.

Only time will tell...........

now that is the best answer!!!

For consumers yes. For moneygrubbing execs who woud rather have a larger piece of the pie instead of a smaller piece, it doesn't work that way for them And therein lies the problem.

However, one thing usually changes their minds. If instead of making a lot of money, the OTHER guy is making a lot of money, then their attitude changes. Let's hope that change of mindset happens sooner rather than later.

Consumers will decide who wins, nothing else. It is sad too because most consumers are stupid. If not, how else do we explain Betamax losing the last format war, it was the truly superior format.

This war is two holiday shopping seasons away from being over. The solution LG unveiled is my favorite, however, until they get the price point under 300USD, I wont even consider buying myself.
