$600 Panasonic Blu-ray player

Basically an update to their first-gen product, the BD10, but with TrueHD & DTS HD (NOT MA) with the 7.1 output. No HDMI 1.3 (I assume, because they would say if it did). No ethernet port, so no BD-J live and probably no support for the new BD-J requirements of Oct. 31.

But hey! The $599 MSRP sure is a big improvement, and they're following Toshiba's lead in including 5 free BD movies, and good titles (POTC 1&2, Fantastic Four, Transporter & Crash.

The PS3 has some competition! :hatsoff:

A link to Panasonic's announcement with a little more detail, and a lot more Hoorah! for blu-ray.

I have the Panasonic. It is a rock solid machine and yes it does DVD-A. According to Dolby WHite Papers, any player that does DOlbyTrueHD decoding should be able to do DVD-A as they are built on the same architecture.

Dollars to donuts, Sony finds a way to disable playing DVD-audio on their players.

CC, this player does support BD-J which is the BD equivelant of iHD. The BD player does not need ethernet to support BD-J. It needs ethernet to support BD-Live which is the online side of BD during movie playback.

Yes, Even the BD10 supports BDJ. The question is will it support 1.1 and PIP.

So now the question is, do i get this player or the ps3? Any suggestions?

I'd say it comes down to two considerations for you -

1- Do the 5 free movies appeal to you? If so, that's a value of $120 - $150, making it less expensive than the PS3, if you were going buy those movies.

2- HDMI & Audio: The PS3 has only HDMI (1.3) and digital optical & coax output. Only the HDMI has enough bandwidth to output the excellent LPCM audio tracks on many blu-ray titles. The Panasonic has HDMI (1.1), digital optical & coax, plus multi-channel analog and it's 7.1 channel. The 1.3 version of HDMI on the PS3 is more "future proof", but the analog output of the Panasonic is more compatible with older receivers. If you would have to buy a new HDMI receiver for the PS3 audio, that again would make the Panasonic less expensive.

Well I also found on bb.com that the new sammy comes with your choice of 4 free bd. Which might even be better than the Panasonics 5, considering you can choose what movies you get.

Talking about the HDMI thing, this is my new receiver http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/v3/pg/product/details/0,,2076_310069789_310985777,00.html

so i dont think id have a problem with the HDMI. But my question is does the ps3 do TruHD? Im going to have a 7.1 system in a couple months so I want to make sure im getting that audio from whatever player i choose.

Also, will the panasonic or the sammy have updates. I know that the ps3 can get updates but not if the others can get it. And Finally, if i do get a ps3, and blu-ray does fail (which i doubt it will) i can still use the ps3 to play video games.

I just dont know to many choises!!

Yes, The PS3 does TrueHD. Samsung has done updates, but not many. Panasonic is extremely good at updating the player and each has been rock solid with no problems. They know what they're doing. Panasonic puts their updates on the website for downloading and burning an ISO image to CD or they'll send you the disk for free.

I just read that the PS3 does the decoding inside the machine for TrueHD, and then passes it through the HDMI 1.3, now if my receiver doesnt have HDMI 1.3 will there be a problem being able to listen to it?

No problem. The machine does the decoding and sends it PCM to the receiver. The receiver will then turn it into analog to pass to the speakers. Any version of HDMi can handle PCM.

I have the Panasonic. I absolutely love it. It is smooth. The picture quality is absolutely outstanding (provided of course the source material is of good quality), excellent sound support for all formats, upconverts SD-DVD nicely since the 1.3 update but still not as nice as the Toshiba XA2.
