Didn't see it either. It's a basically a free hardware upgrade then, way to go Dish Network.

Back when I purchased my first HD DVR (921) a few years ago it was obvious that MPEG4 was coming and that the equipment would become obsolete. It's not like MPEG4 has just been sprung on us. MPEG4 is a necessity to move forward and the faster they move the better.
The 622 is a much better piece of equipment than either the 921 or 942. Dish has gone to great lengths to make the transition as painless as possible. But regardless the writing has been on the wall for a long time. It's always been a matter of when not if.

Dish has to get rid of MPEG2 HD in order to be competitive in the HD market. At some point they will have their new satellites up, which may require millions to repoint their dishes to receive premium HD services. But until then, they have to be able to add HD channels and retain at least adequate HD PQ (I would say it is mediocre now, but I know many find it acceptable). The only way to do this with their existing satellites is to convert MPEG2 HD channels to MPEG4.
VOOM was the obvious path of least resistance as it is a tier of 15 channels, thus making conversion to MPEG4 very enticing, plus it has relatively low subscription rates for those who have not converted to new receivers & metal packs.
Thus converting VOOM will gain significant bandwidth at a relatively low cost to E*.
It will be more troublesome to convert the old HD Pack of HBO, Showtime, ESPN, etc., over as that's a larger subscriber base. Although I suspect it shrinks every month and this move will shrink it further. I believe these channels will eventually be converted too, especially should a lot of national HD channels start popping up before E* has new birds to put them on.

Why are you going to pay more money? It looks like it is going to be a like for like swap (HD DVR for HD DVR...)
The only slight gripe I would have would be going from an owned 921 to a non-owned (leased) 622. But considering how Dish keeps screwing up the software on the 921, I won't complain much.
He also said he thought that some local stations broadcast in 1080p.
In fact, he made several technical/factual errors which make me question his overall credibility when it comes to the technical side of things. I wouldn't hang on his every word or try to read too much between the lines.

Yes, but he did say that terrestrial (sp?) stations may do that in the future. The current standards/FCC channel selections don't allow enough bandwidth for 1080p.
I have heard it from more people at Dish then just Charlie.
Trust me Charlie is no expert on the technical things. I think Charlie himself would tell you that if you asked him.
It would make sense that once Dish moves to the all MPEG4 setup, all new customers will be Mpeg4 only. That's when the attrition rate will bring down the # of mpeg2 customers. Once the pure mpeg4 system is up I'm sure you'll see a few more conversion deals for regular customers. Keep in mind, these free upgrades long term don't cost as much as you think for Dish. The 18 month contract is where they make the money. Programming is the cash cow.
That said, I would be surprised if Dish doesn't quietly up the programming commitment for new users to 24 months, if they haven't already.

Read the first post, they are going to call people who have the HD package and have MPEG2 HD receivers.

Well, 18 mo re-up to keep channels theyll lose and get a FREE 622 aint a bad deal. Face it people, you re-up cell contracts for less and many of them are for 24 mo's.
Well - I disagree. Any long-time sub shouldn't have to give a comittment to simply maintain their progamming. With a cell phone, you aren't FORCED to change equipment - you do it if you WANT to - its your choice!
