Updated 722 Information

There's only so much upgrading you can do within the boundaries of the platform before you might as well just replace the unit, same with computers, which is essentially what these devices are.

I wonder if anyone will try the PS3 design with a dvr. The ps3 video playback is mostly software.

I dont know much about the insides of a sat dvr, but the more software and less hardware the easier it is to keep current.

Here's a crazy idea. Make the receivers upgradable. Nah. Not enough money to be made in that.
And who will maintain what hardware is compatible ?? When a customer installs un-approved hardware, it doesn't work, why should it cost Dish money to do a support phone call ??

As much as DVRs are nothing more than PCs to us geeks, to Dish, they're not. They're closed, non-user-servicable boxes.

This VOD is NOT the VOD you are getting now, it will be the new DishONLINE Broadband service which requires a broadband connection hooked to your 622 / 722.

So DishONLINE will still be available for the 622? I was worried that this was going to be another bait and switch getting us 622 users excited about DishONLINE then telling us we have to upgrade to get it.

Of course they cost. But they cost LESS and you can keep them as long as you want. I've got PPV movies that have been on my 622 for over a year.

I think that's ultimately the issue right there. I don't see what the difference should be whether it's via the net or via the satellite. I hope sometime they get that ironed out.

Customers don't like being confused. One set of rules as much as you can and customers are happier.

Has anyone noticed that the projected ship date for the 722 is about simultaneous with the scheduled release of external HD support for the 622.

I'm guessing that "out of the box" the 722 will support external disks.

Cheers,

Probably will support it, but probably won't be active without paying the fee. :)

The fee unlocks external disc access for the account, including any receivers supporting the feature.

I wish we could opt to turn on HDVOD for the 622 and lose internal HD space. And customers can make that up by adding an external drive for other stuff

I'd probably only use HDVOD for Howard stern if it ever became available, or good movies maybe

I was thinking (that Dish is thinking) more along the lines of, oh, $30 to $40...

I'd do a one-time fee of $9.95. And Dish, if you're reading, that $9.95 is $9.95 more than I'll EVER spend on PPV or VOD.

Seeing as I don't really record all that much (2/3 of my 721 is empty), I don't think this would be a 30-40$ problem for me. :)

I'll hold out for the 722 though just because I don't see the point in paying 100$ (instead of 50 on Aug 15) for the 622, nor do I see the point in getting the older box. I'm not a technology chaser in this.

I DO hope they'll just send me the frigging boxes though. I've no interest in those morons being on my property. I'll put up a 61.5 dish into my DP34 before calling to DIU.

I'm also hoping they'll let me have a VIP222 to replace the 2 311s on lease as well. I've had an account in good standing for years. :)

Geez, I go away form the site for a few hours and look what I miss :)

I am now very interested in upgrading my 622 to a 722; definitely will consider a dish'n it up offer when they make one available. 55 hours of HD is a HUGE improvement over 30.

The ability to turn off the VOD feature would be nice. As far as I know you can't do that right now. They just need a VOD menu. It could be something like "Off, Free Only, On", then in the center it'd be "Internal, External, Internal+External" for VOD storage, on the right side would be thresholds in hours for Internal and External for VOD.

I realize that'd be user friendly, which is why they'd not do it. :)

Not happy about no downloadable HD "VOD" on my ViP622. Not happy it would quickly self expire like today's "VOD" rather than be like today's PPV. So I probably wouldn't use it anyway. Looks like I might just buy that Blu-ray player a bit sooner, and visit the rental stores.

I hope they offer a decent deal for current 622 leases. Id love to have 55 instead of 30.
