First off, thanks to everyone on this forum for me getting this far! I could not have done it without all of your excellent help and responses to a newbie like me.

I succeeded in getting Dish where the installer told me it wouldn't work. I now have a Dish 500 pointing at 110/119, and another dish at 61.5. These feed into a DP34, which runs to my Dish 311 receiver (currently). However, when I run a check switch, I don't get anything on satellite 110. 119 and 61.5 are coming in at signal strengths around 110-120 as reported by the 311, but 0 for 110. I assume that the problems are that I poorly crimped one of the cables, or that the DP Twin LNB port 1 is bad, or that port 1 on the DP34 is bad. Can you guys think of anything else that might cause the problem?

Secondly, the 311 receiver that I bought on eBay was not deactivated. I wanted to get an unactivated receiver that I could point and get the "Congrats for pointing your dish at 61.5" channel, but when I powered it up, I got the whole channel listing of 119 and 61.5, and not all were blocked. How do I go about deactivating the receiver. I don't want to steal TV.

Try connecting the satellite inputs at the switch in this order:

Port 1 119
Port 2 110
Port 3 61.5

If you don't get 119 then you have a bad port 1 on the switch.

As far as deactivating a receiver, contact the person who sold you the receiver. They need to deactivate the receiver before selling it, if they don't want to do it the receiver is most likely stolen or leased which meand it still belongs to Dish Network.

Try putting 119 on DP34 input 1, 110 on input 2 and 61.5 on input 3, and run Check Switch again.

Or, it may be that your Dish 500 isn't aligned right, and you're really seeing 110 in the 119 LNB. If that's the case, Check Switch should say "Wrong Satellite" or something like that.

I switched inputs 1 and 2 of the DP34, and now the switch matrix looks like this:

119 | X | 61.5
ALL | X | ALL
TWIN|TWIN|DUAL

So... does that mean that the 110 part of the LNB is bad? Or does it just mean that I did a bad job of crimping the cable that that one is on.

I don't think you're getting 110. You're gonna have to go back and align the dish properly. You could cover the 119 eye with aluminun foil and start looking for 110.

Okay... the dish was peaked at 119. I covered the 119 part of the LNB with foil, then peaked the dish to 110.

Then I switched the inputs to the DP34, so that I had 110 on port 1, 119 on port 2, and 61.5 on port 3. When I ran a check switch, I was able to get 110 and 61.5, but not 119. When I switched the inputs on the DP34 again, so that 119 was on port 1, 110 was on port 2, and 61.5 was on port 3, I was able to get 119.

I guess this means that port 2 on the DP34 is bad, eh?

That's what it looks like.
