The stretching is done by the broadcasters. However, CV does additional compression on all the channels except broadcast stations(ABC, NBC,CBS,etc); RSNs(MSG, YES, SNY, etc) and ESPN 1&2.
Sorry, but mindlessly defending CV without regards to facts makes you a fanboy or possibly an employee.
Fact #1: CV over-compresses all their HD offerings except broadcast HD, the local RSNS & ESPN(1&2). CV's compression causes numerous visual artifacts that reduce the quality of the picture...
I stay with them because it is my only option for MSGHD, trust me if Fios had it I'd be gone already.
And maybe if more people complained about the poor quality HD they would have to do something about. I'd rather have half of the HD channels they currently have without the compression.
And...
I don't need a link. The proof is right in the SA8300. If you look at the QAM channel assignments you will see that MOST QAM frequencies have 4 HD channels assigned to them.
In order to squeeze that much into these QAMs you need to compress the bandwidth, in some cases from 18Mbs to 9Mbs...
Newsflash - Cablevision compresses the hell out of most of their HD channels reducing their bandwidth by 50% which destroys the quality of the HD channel. (i.e. all Voom Channels, MOJO, VSHD, NGHD, DiscoveryHD, TBSHD, TNTHD, etc...)
They do not have capacity for 500 HD channels, that is a bold faced lie based on the ability to use SDV for 500 HD channels. They can't even get 15 SDV channels working!
