Yup, 52.0 lacks DVD mode, which comes in handy for multiple items when programmed via learning.

I like the 52 remote overall, but am still getting used to the lack of stop and rewind and fast forward buttons. I like the smaller size and feel of the new remote enough to learn to deal with a few less buttons.

It all depends on how much you use the remote and how many features you like to use on the receiver. Many members here are pretty advanced and use all kinds of features that the average customer doesn't use.

The average customer that just wants to be able to turn on the TV and a watch their shows is going to like the simple design and lack of buttons. The advanced user is going to find it a bit of a pain because there are more button presses needed to do certain things like turn on CC or PIP.

I myself like the look and feel of the new remote and enjoy using it most of the time. There are times I notice that it's a pain to access certain functions though and find that the 40.0 remote is better. Both remotes work well and it's going to depend on personal preference whether you like it or not.

In my experience, the press, or press-and-hold separate functions have always been a PITA for me (if you don't hold long enough, or press too long, you get a potential unintended action). That is a deal-breaker for me.

Playing with the "old" 40.0 this morning I was remembering how convenient it is in some regards: I was "cleaning house" (getting rid of programs and series episodes) and how nice it was to just press the "BLUE" button. And last night we were watching something that needed a lot of "on-and-off" CC'ing - and man, how I love that "GREEN" button!

yeah, I don't know that I can ever get used to "press-and-hold" for FF and BACK - the 40.0 buttons work so much better for me. I found myself constantly "over-shooting" with the new remote.

It's a super remote. but it needs a couple of things to be perfect. Color buttons and the little long press buzz feedback that I have on my Harmony short press/long press buttons.

For me, the remotes were an issue.

My installer (authorized retailer) said he has to take the remotes, as Dish will charge them $14 per remote if they are not returned. I told him I'm throwing "the Bullsh!t flag" and he's not taking them. He called his office manager, said I'd be charged for the remotes not returned. I said he's not taking them, they are not billing me and I'm not going to pay a bill for them. I let him take two and kept the rest (I have four). I said if Dish wants them back to send me a box.

I had timers on two and Joey settings on the other two. I restored Joey settings and retained the "HD only" guide setting, restored the Hopper timer settings. I kept the ability to mirror via another remote.

I've heard (scherrman?) here that dish is not interested in the remotes. That coupled with other misinformation the installer had (can't pair more than one remote) led me to not believe him about dish back charging for remotes.

He did take the "high speed" HDMI cable with him from the 4k Joey (didn't realize until he was gone), but wanted nothing of the boxed 301 and remote I offered to placate his demanding manager. :D

I wonder how many ebay remotes are from techs/retailers selling the remotes they are "required" to take back?

At first my Dish installer said he is required to take them but he would call his Supervisor to see if could leave them. About half way through the install(I was assisting when he needed a hand without getting in his way) he said he would leave them and don't worry about it. He said they don't do anything with them but there told to bring everything back.

My guy tool one remote (of the 5 I had) & said they only were interested in returning a Hopper remote. The rest I retained & distributed among the new equipment.

When I mentioned to my installer (Real Dish Network employed installer) that I wanted to sync my old 40.0 remote to the H3 to restore the timers and favorites list from my old HWS, he asked if I also wanted to keep the old remotes. I said that I would as long as he would not get in "trouble" for not collecting them. He said he could just check off "Remotes not available" and there would be no issues. While the 52.0 remotes are functional, I prefer the additional buttons and direct feature access of the 40.0. I don't understand why the 52.0 remote exists. It seems like a step backwards. It may be cheaper to build and generate cost saving for Dish? I suspect the lack of a DVD/BluRay control mode is at least partially due to the lack of buttons on the 52.0 remote.

I had not considered this but I bet you are right - hard to control a DVD or Blu-Ray player with no stop rewind or fast forward buttons.

My installer did not bat an eye when I asked to keep the old remotes.

They may ask for them but you are not required to return them.

Dish has no idea if the original remote failed and you purchased a new one. Just tell them you purchased it and it's yours.
