Subchannel Discussion Thread

If more people ask for it and demand it on social media and on sites like this, the big wigs will listen and begin entertaining the idea of having CBSN as a .3 (at least on CBS Owned and Operated stations) once they loosen some of their bitrate requirements for O&Os.
If you look at how it went with Universal Sports Network, you wouldn't hold your breath.

That said, NBC is a bit player in USN ownership.

Cheddar are going to launch a general news channel at the of the first quarter of next year called Cheddar Big News. Could this launch as a subchannel like Cheddar?

Maybe take older history shows from Smithsonian?
If Smithsonian syndicated their older shows, they wouldn't have anything left for their own channel.

Smithsonian productions are probably pretty expensive and that kind of money doesn't lend itself to subchannels.

I get the feeling the many don't understand how much money programming (even older shows) costs. The cast of the Brady Bunch is still getting royalty checks. Producers expect to get a return for at least 20-30 years for non-event programming.

Quest have announced shows for their new channel shows include Modern Marvels, Auction Kings, Ice Road Truckers: Deadliest Roads, Swamp Loggers, Massive Moves, Mayday Air Disaster, Dual Survival and Most Daring
This looks very much like recycled History Channel programming that has been played to death already.

The Quest website suggests that they'll be launching in my market in January.

It' not too bad for an OTA channel and there is no other subchannel like this so its a bonus. Pity Discovery/A&E wouldn't buy a % interest in a subchannel like this. The OTA channel channel also called Quest in the UK which is operated by Discovery is a very good channel with repeats of Discovery shows like How It Made, Mighty Cruise Ships and Chasing Classic Cars, it also produce originals like Salvage Hunters. Maybe in a few years as OTA is a growing business in the US Discovery/A&E may buy a stake in a subchannel?

I suspect that frustration with the repack and the added confusion/expense of a possible (as in possibly successful or possibly aborted) transition to Next Gen TV will probably reduce OTA to something that isn't worth the trouble.

It would have been better if they got Ice Road Truckers as there are 138 episodes where as IRT: Deadliest Roads has only 23 episodes. Other than Modern Marvels the show's they got have few episodes and due to this will get repeated over and over again in a short space of time

When is Live Well Network meant to shut down completely? Or why is it still in main urban areas like New York? It was hardly that expensive to program anyway and was an alternative to the 'classic TV series' subchannels?

Why doesn't the US have a normal DTT system like Italy/UK where FTA channels launch on a system like Freeview (or Freeview built into the TV) and everyone has access to a set number of FTA channels? Why not proper DTT system in the UK?

Any ratings for any of the subchannels or how do they do? Where can you find some?
Nielsen is now ranking some of the subchannels. According to a recent survey, MeTV ranked #20 and was ahead of A&E (even though Walking Dead was the #1 cable show), Lifetime and MTV.

Where you might find tabular data is anybody's guess as TV By the Numbers doesn't seem to show subchannels.
