Sony Is Ceding Control of TV Hardware Business To China's TCL

Sony's processor may still be the best in certain scenes, but LG has pretty much caught up for most content, and Samsung is only a half step behind. I don't see it as the differentiator it used to be, and I think that is a big reason why they are spinning this product line off.

Yes, that us true, it isn't like old CCFL or LED Direct Lit LCDs. However, independently controlled LEDs aren't really a new thing though. Any FALD LED set has them in some number, and any Mini LED, like my Bravia 9, has them. e.g. RGB mini LED is supposed to be better, but there are...

No, it is still a backlit technology:

They said the Bravia 9 could be an OLED killer as well. It isn't. I still bought one, but the only thing that will "kill OLEDs" is another emissive panel tech. I kind of regret not getting an OLED in 2025 as the reason I did so (bright, direct sunlight on the screen) is no longer a factor.

    How things have changed

"Within The Gauge, "other" includes all other TV usage that does not fall into the broadcast, cable or streaming categories. This primarily includes all other tuning (unmeasured sources), unmeasured video on demand (VOD), audio streaming, gaming and other device (DVD playback) use." I'd guess...

Sony Is Ceding Control of TV Hardware Business To China's TCL

Sony has already been using LG, Samsung, and TCL panels for years. Their differentiator was their processing, but that isn't winning them the sales it used to. LG and Samsung processing has pretty much caught up with Sony's lead, and TCL and HiSense aren't far behind. This is likely the real...

Sony hasn't brought anything to CES in years. They have had their own PR events instead forever, so nothing new there. FWIW: I bought a Bravia 9 last year, and it is a great set, but I had already decided it was going to be the last Sony I bought. Not sure what I'd get instead, but it is just...

iOS, MacOS, etc. 26 is making me seriously consider switching

Well, I spent the weekend messing around with different streaming platforms, and here is what I found. 1. Roku would be an acceptable alternative to Apple TV, but there is no Channels DVR app. This is really too bad as I already have Roku hardware on hand and have always found the UI to be...

LOL. I am married to a CPA who did a tax concentration when she got her masters, but she does corporate finance now. She used to work in stock compensation, and she did the taxes for a couple of years so she could answer questions for other employees. I've done our taxes every other year...

Yeah, I use TurboTax online which is only slightly less painful than doing everything by hand (most years). Of course, I am not even sure if you can do it by hand anymore. I thought I saw something about them doing away with paper submission.

The Dell was what was available from the spares pool. I will say Dell and Lenovo have both upped their support for Linux significantly in the past 5 years or so. Anything not ARM-based works out of the box. I'm probably a couple years away from a laptop refresh unless I want to buy something...

I can see that (kind of) when I am searching for music or looking for suggestions based on my listening habits, but this is in my music library -- stuff I "own." If I click on an artist, I only want to see that artist's work. I've started on path to reduce the amount of Apple in my life. I...

OK, Apple Music. Why does it make sense to group Mike + The Mechanics with Genesis? Yes, there was a member of Genesis in the band, but that doesn't mean Genesis == Mike + The Mechanics.

Probably just the fact that no team at Apple is responsible for older versions of OSes that include vulnerable versions of WebKit. That said, Safari does tend to be one of the few things they will patch beyond 2-3 years...occasionally.

You can make Liquid Glass slightly more readable through a couple of methods, but there is no way to completely avoid a lot of the transparency look and feel that break actual functionality. For instance, in Apple Music on MacOS 26, I recently discovered I cannot select artists that are near...
