MPEG4 HD DVR and Home Media Center news:

It sounds like you are talking about Ultra Wideband (UWB), and that technology is real, but very compute-intensive. Check out www.timedomain.com for more info. There is a single company with the patents on equivalent technology over wires, and it will be providing the great equalizer for...

MPEG4 HD DVR and Home Media Center news:

LonghornXP - I am concerned that you are being fed mole-bait. This scenario will not work. Since D* does not have physical access to the card, it must get the data somehow. This requires: 1) Having users send cards in periodically (unreliable and expensive) 2) A broadband connection 3) A modem...

2 Year Committment For Equipment Replacement

The retail units are heavily subsidized, according to the CSR script. The insult is when you buy used and they try to tack on an additional commitment. The fury happens when your HD Tivo gets replaced under warranty and they try to add on an additional commitment. THAT one got the CSR a few...

    30 sec skip and NFL

Funny, that! Now if oyu could divide your viewing into say, four chunks of equal times, of say 15 minutes each... ;)

Do you use the 30 second skip?

Check the How-To over at the Yahoo group. However, it is the same as for "normal" D* Tivos: Select->Play->Select->3->0->Select There is a way to permanently enable it, but you have to go elsewhere to find out how.

Buyer Beware eBay D* HD receivers

I would offer him the option of a neutral rating (with accurate text) if he provides you a refund ASAP. Otherwise, let him have it on the feedback. The sad part is that he will leave you a ding in retaliation. You may want to consider feedback sniping, in any event.

    Does anybody even like D*?

AVS is around for a LOT more than satellite... (in fact, it's one of the least busy over there...). That being said, the reason why I like D* is the HD Tivo and all it's liberated glory (what can I say? I'm an archivist!). If it were not for the Tivo, I would probably have D* to get the...

    HDTVTAX.COM - What next

Gents - let's be clear on this. The NFL puts the rights out for bid. It does not set the end-user price. When D* paid a record amount to have the US exclusive rights, we ALL should have expected price increases (and we got them). At this point, D* is merely testing the price elasticity of the HD...

Sky high-definition box to have network connection

Not to be too pissy, but what exactly do you think FIOS TV will look like? Verizon's stated strategy is lots of VOD, and the 2wire STBs might as well have "Dell" or "HP" written on them for all that they are much different than a PC.

Maybe InHD channels aren't coming soon

How's this: I would gladly pay $3/mo for InHD1 and InHD2, or I would freely guive up ESPN-HD!

    MPEG4 Upgrade Discussion

...of VC-1 (WMV-HD) and AVC (MPEG-4/H.264). AVC IS more computationally intensive, and I would expect there to be some teething issues, serious teething issues with D*'s real-time encoding gear if they try to get anywhere close to the theoretical "sweet spot" compression ratio of the technology.

Maybe InHD channels aren't coming soon

Given DirecTV's aggressive pursuit, I would expect this to mean that we will see InHD1/2 on D* if they can get the FCC to go along with their point of view.

Maybe InHD channels aren't coming soon

    MPEG4 Upgrade Discussion

...now sounds like we will be converted by the end of August if Lee's statement is correct. Since I'm in the first group, I'll be curious to see what D* offers up to replace my well-and-truly hacked HD Tivo. If they don't offer me archiving and a large amount of space, they may lose this...

    More HD? When?

Note the timing - the transition is slated to go into 2007, and will impact ALL D* customers in some fashion. Last time I checked, that was north of 12 million folks and growing. We are basically saying the same thing.

Discussion of D*s upcoming conversion to MPEG 4

...(this seems more like speculation, since I have not seen a press release implying this. However, see my guess #5, below. This seems likely, since D* will need to free enough bandwidth to simulcast MPEG-4 on the traditional satellites?). 3) As an inducement to move to MPEG-4, a few...

    More HD? When?

New frequencies = new LNBs at a minimum. mx6bfast - you will be able to use the HD Tivo through the overlap period, if you don't end up handing it in for an "upgrade". However, the theory that seems to make the most sense is that new content is only in MPEG-4 and probably only on the new sats...

    HD Tivo worth it?

The HD Tivo is the best deal going, right now, for HD - period. Also, it can be made to do things that no other HD DVR can do. The value of these is quite high if you are into Home Theater at all.

Whats the deal with "HD Lite"?

Location? huh? Someone in Dallas is pulling down a completely different signal from the same transponder on the same satellite as someone in LA? There are localization issues that can have a realtively minor impact, but dismissing the guy's measurements as being location-specific is a little too...

    A little Voom fall-out speculation

Can they move the sat, though? I'd think that it might give them better capability at one of their other CONUS slots. Of course, they would probably need additional licenses, but heck, that's what speculation is about, right? :)

    A little Voom fall-out speculation

So, regardless of what happens to the Voom service itself, it looks like Charlie and the E*folks are getting a new bird at a fairly decent price. Now, does Charlie go for HD LIL (I can't remember whether Rainbow 1 has spots on its TPs) or an expanded HD line-up? If he goes for more HD channels...

Isn't the DVR10 essentially just a hard drive in a firewire enclosure?

    HD-Tivo question

I'm guessing we will see $800 promotional prices for the holidays, but not much lower than that. Robert's right. The HDTivo seems to be very hot right now, even at the current price structure. My guess is that D* is minting new subs (both cable rejects like me, and E* refugees).
