After 8 years, time to say goodbye to Dish

...And service cancelled. Offered $40/month off for at first 6 months (later 12), but I remained resolute. Thanks, Dish for 8 years of good TV.

Good call. Looks much better. Didn't realize they had 2 menu choices. Oh well, watched the (sadly disappointing) Doctor Who finale. Time to run the cancellation gauntlet.

After 8 years, time to say goodbye to Dish

Well, back on my original topic, I got my Tivo yesterday. I yanked the antenna connection from my 622 and hooked it up to the Tivo and began setting up. Set up tool a rather ridiculous long time. Like 3 hours "preparing" to download data. But it eventually came through. It rapidly found...

After 8 years, time to say goodbye to Dish

Set up my new Roku 3 yesterday and am quite impressed with the quality of streaming even through my 2 mbps connection. Looked better than SD most of the time, though hardly HD. I was also surprised by how much was available on Prime streaming. Sadly, the post office apparently tried to...

After 8 years, time to say goodbye to Dish

1 year is way too long for me for my Doctor Who. I'll gladly pony up $40-50 for a season to get it right after broadcast. I just hope when they add the prime app they don't take away the instant video downloading.

After 8 years, time to say goodbye to Dish

Not the current season. Only past seasons. I will see the finale on Dish this weekend. Then, if all goes well with the Tivo, Dish will be cancelled next week. The first Amazon Instant title I plan to buy is the Doctor Who Christmas Special. I'm not going to wait a year for it to show up...

After 8 years, time to say goodbye to Dish

Yes, it's expensive, but still way cheaper when you only care about two shows. Buying seasons of Doctor Who will be ~$40. I was paying ~$245 for that privilege before (3 months of Dish). The last 7 episodes of Mad Men will be $2.99 each. Plus, I at least know my money will go to my shows...

After 8 years, time to say goodbye to Dish

Why I got the premiere. It downloads Amazon Instant titles rather than streams. So it can take 6 or 7 hours overnight to download the HD.

After 8 years, time to say goodbye to Dish

The guy I was quoting suggested I add a Roku to the setup, so I do mean Roku as I'm adding that to the Tivo Premiere bought on ebay when I first posted.

After 8 years, time to say goodbye to Dish

I ordered a Roku 3 yesterday. I'm aware of the lack of Prime on the Premier, but really want the instant video. I want to be able to buy new Doctor Who and Mad Men and be able to download them. Aside from a media center PC with tuner cards and mythTV, it seemed to me the Premier was the only...

After 8 years, time to say goodbye to Dish

Possibly. But I think that will be tough for broadcasters to do and get away with. The news will dig up plenty of people, including a lot of seniors, that will show why they rely on broadcast TV for weather warnings and the like, and how they can't afford cable. I at least don't see it...

After 8 years, time to say goodbye to Dish

I'm finally doing it. I'm saying goodbye to pay TV. I just got a used Tivo Premiere with lifetime on Ebay, and will be getting my programming almost exclusively from OTA, DVDs/Blu-Ray's from the library and my own collection, and Amazon Instant video. Prices keep going up, and the quality...

Dish products that missed the mark or never made it to market

I forget the model number, but I believe Dish put together a 722-style DVR for use in cable company systems to compete with Scientific Atlanta, Motorola and the like. But cablecos, not wanting to do business with a competitor despite the superior offering, balked and it never made it to market...

    Pulled the Plug

The good thing is she does not even have pay tv. Just a DVD player and her collection of the X-Files and Columbo. Though I've well worked her into Star Trek and Doctor Who

    Pulled the Plug

I am, like OP, heavily considering pulling the plug. I am getting married and am looking to reduce expenses in September. Almost all the TV I watch already is either network programming or reruns of shows I can get for free at the library on DVD. To address the advertizing annoyance, I plan...

Supreme Court ruled in favor of TV Networks

I don't, actually. No Roku, BluRay lacks it, no smart TV, no more PC at home. Besides, though, having to constantly change inputs should be an unnecessary pain. And even so, I'm not looking for a streaming source. I want something akin to the Amazon Unbox player, that can download the video...

Supreme Court ruled in favor of TV Networks

More than that. Lifetime Tivo subscriptions are $500 alone, plus at least $200 for the equipment. $700 at least. Plus, no ability to download rather than stream Amazon shows for those of us with slow internet connections.

Supreme Court ruled in favor of TV Networks

I hope this inspires a new generation of DTVPal DVR type devices. The ruling seems to allow for that. You just can't have OTA PROGRAMMING streamed. An OTA dvr plus perhaps adding in Netflix and Hulu. Maybe even the ability to download Amazon programming to the hard drive. Yeah, that's a...

In the old software, it was easy to find what DIRT members are online by looking for the red text at the bottom. How can I find them quickly in the new software?
