I don't think black bars on top or bottom is actually an option, except when an SD channel is broadcast that way. By default, the HD feed is squashed into an SD screen, but you have the option to cut off the extra width so the picture isn't squished or zoom in further (which cuts off the black...

I was going to suggest a slingbox/slingcatcher combo for a cable-less solution, but the tubes tell me the slingcatcher only outputs in SD. Looks like it has HDMI output though so maybe a future software update will allow HD output. Anyway -- for the cost of the slingcatcher and the slingbox HD...

What about the new remote Dish Network is planning soon (may be out already) -- $20 and if it doesn't have a code you need you can program it with the TV's remote.

For recordings you know you'll probably watch before the next episode, try limiting saved recordings to 1 or 2 via the options menu on the timer. Then you don't have to delete anything manually.

So the consensus around here is definitely that MPEG4 is a good thing. Why? I thought the main thing was smaller files. Should we expect smaller files to have better picture quality? Any other benefits?

Update: So I decided to call the installer and get him to fix it. I called his extension after 8pm, expecting to leave a voice mail, but it rang through to somebody else and I explained my problem. He had the installer call me within 15 minutes. I hope the guy doesn't get in trouble...
