Fish tape vs. fiberglass fish rods for DIY cable installation??

Can someone who has experience with both of these cable-running tools give me a good pros vs. cons type of explanation as to the proper, effective use of them? I have to run some cable, not tons, but enough in places where I'm going to need one or the other, or both. Primarily vertical runs...

    Need help diagnosing artifacting issues...

So, Who makes the OTA HD set top receiver? Does it downconvert to accomodate your non HD tv set? What method do you use to connect your receiver? Do you dump your stuff off onto DVD or something similar? A BIG draw with the DVR is the recording/time shifting capability... I do...

    Need help diagnosing artifacting issues...

Have tweaked my tv as much as I can, by using my remote and a factory service repair manual. Both my contrast and brightness are set to nominal values using assorted tweaking DVDs (Avia, S&V, etc.) I understand the issues with the locals being awful. I see the trouble with other stations as...

    General 508/510 questions...

Any significant differences between these 2 units? I don't need or want a 522, at least for now. This will be my 1st DVR from Dish, with several yrs. with just the basic receivers working well. Any pitfalls I need to be on the lookout for? Dish has this deal where you can give them 25 bucks...

How to tell if receiver is getting old

I have a 4900, and a 300 for the extra bedroom, and both seem to be ok, as far as I can tell. I ocassionally lose my signal when I get a wicked rain storm (normal rain doesnt seem to bother it) I like the 4900 because of the dolby digital for PPV. It it possible for a receiver to be "too old"...

Sat signal strength question.. How good is good?

I've had my Dish for 4 yrs, and have always wondered this... How good is 'good' reception on a Dish? Isn't the signal either on or off? Is 105 on the strength meter for both sats going to look better on my TV than, say, 75 on the strength meter? Both my 110 and 119 sat hover around 100, yet...

Correct way to strip RG6 quad???

Mike, What I meant was to strip everything from the cable, EXCEPT the final foil layer which surrounds the foam insulator. MY Belden quad shield, from outer jacket in, goes like this: Outer jacket Aluminum braid (40 % coverage) Foil (100% coverage) Aluminum braid (60 % coverage) Foil...

    Dish Network old/new install question??

Yes, I have an older Dish 500 with separate, dual LNBFs. My previous setup had only 2 receivers, with 2 sw21s to split the signal. Can I set it up this way, and then just change the switch when Im ready, and run the 3rd cable to the 3rd receiver, or is it more complicated than that...

Correct way to strip RG6 quad???

No offence taken at all.. Call me weird, but I want to do it right the 1st time. I dont want to test and try in out and see if it works ok. You are probably right, but I'm approaching it with a attitude of a pro installer (which Im not), and Im thinking they would do it a certain way, all...

    Dish Network old/new install question??

Correct way to strip RG6 quad???

is there any harm in stripping down to the final foil layer, if I leave it intact and unmarked? My Paladin cable stripper won't allow that kind of precision, and even if I leave the final braid layer as well, some of it does get removed in the stripping process. Cable is Belden RG6 quad, 60 %...

Correct way to strip RG6 quad???

I have a cable stripper, but I can vary the cut depth if I want, so I guess that's what I'm after. Do you strip all the way to the last layer of foil if using compression connectors, or do you leave also the last braid, and fold it back before termination?? Does not folding back the last...

Correct way to strip RG6 quad???

There seems to be 2 different ways to correctly strip RG6 quad...I'm using compression connectors, and have seen 2 different ways. One strips all layers, leaving just the final foil shield intact, before termination. The other way is similar, leaving the final braid intact and folding it back...
