HR20 died - can I retrieve recorded stuff for transfer?

Great suggestion, Chip. Surely nothing to lose. Thanks, Bryan

HR20 died - can I retrieve recorded stuff for transfer?

Thanks for the replies. I feared the worst about being able to salvage recordings. Too bad D* couldn't have enabled a more user-friendly design for such instances. I guess there must be occasional failures and it seems a shame to prevent restoration when the rest of the machine won't boot up...

HR20 died - can I retrieve recorded stuff for transfer?

My faithful HR20-700 finally quit so thinking about getting another HR20 but want to consider a newer HR25 with AM21 for the locals. Is there any way I can extract the previously recorded programs from my dead HR20? I've heard that the HD is solidly married to the DVR but thought I would check...

    HR20 OTA dropouts/pixelation

OTA Pixelation As mentioned in post #7, I did go direct to the antenna to eliminate the possibility of a defective spliter. I am aware that a 4-way splitter will attenuate the signal at each output about 7 db. However, with that attenuation, I still get over 90%+ signal strength and the other...

    HR20 OTA dropouts/pixelation

OTA Pixelation I am connecting the OTA connector on the receiver through about 50 feet of high quality RG-6 to a 4-way splitter that feeds my other three HR20s and the splitter is connected to a UHF antenna. I get very good signal strength as I am on a mountain looking at downtown Atlanta about...

    HR20 OTA dropouts/pixelation

OTA pixelation on HR20-100 Thanks for the comments. My HR20 is a -100 that was purchased new less than a year ago (new old stock that still had the original D* seal) and hasn't been used all that much. My other -100 receiver is O.K. but does need an occasional restart to clear the pixelation...

    HR20 OTA dropouts/pixelation

Oh well, thanks anyway. I'll start checking some power supply voltages but don't have any values to reference. Any clues on that? Maybe a restart momentarily takes some of the power supply lines off their normal load and allows normal voltages to be restored. Since all other functions perform...

    HR20 OTA dropouts/pixelation

Thanks for your response. Checking the connection without the splitter is fairly easy so I'll try that with little confidence. My antenna has a clear view to the transmitters and signal strength on most OTA stations are over 80%. The condition occurs on all OTA channels. IMHO, the biggest clue...

    HR20 OTA dropouts/pixelation

Starting a new post as my previous trail has been neglected by me (travel, remodeling, etc.) My local channels work fine after a restart but after a few days degrades to unwatchable with pixelation and dropouts. The signal meter in the setup screen shows strong signal on both tuner 1 and...

    OTA pixelation and dropouts

BTW, senior moment - I meant to say TUNER 1 and TUNER 2 in original post. Cables are fine. Also, I think the main clue is that a restart always temporary corrects the condition but it returns after a few days. I'll try swapping receivers with known ones that behave properly today but may not...

    OTA pixelation and dropouts

Two of my HR20-100s have nuisance pilxelations and dropouts. When viewing signal strength, readings jump from "not acquired" to 90% and alternate between receiver 1 and 2. I can correct the problem with a restart but problem recurs in a few days. All satellite channels are O.K. Two other HR-20s...

Change SlimLine to SWM - off-air question

Been doing a lot of head scratching and it would seem that my best option would be to go with the SWM3 lnb (which is easy to get at and not all four cables go to a central point so rewiring would still be necessary.) The SWM8 would give me some future additional capability but quite sure the...

Change SlimLine to SWM - off-air question

Gosh, I think I hit a gold mine of info - really appreciate the inputs but now wish I understood all I know. Although one IRD has two lines already connected, I do not have two lines to the other IRDs and trying to avoid the tedious task of snaking more RG-6 in near-impossible paths to get to...

Change SlimLine to SWM - off-air question

Thanks for the comment. Yes, I'm aware that the capacity is at its limit with four dual tuners but can't see that I would want any more. Also, not sure if its a valid premise, but I assume that the splitter for eight would sacrifice a few more dBs and wanted to be sure I was getting all the...

Change SlimLine to SWM - off-air question

I guess it knows whether its a SWM lnb-3 vs. a SWM lnb-5 connected?

Change SlimLine to SWM - off-air question

Thanks, Chip. I'll be sure to configure the dish as a SWM 3LMB.

Change SlimLine to SWM - off-air question

I have four HR20s but existing SlimLine 5LNB is too limited for all the dual tuners. I seem to recall in my dim memory from past forum traffic that there is an issue with off-air guide info if I only have the 99, 101 and 103 satellites (SWM3.) Does the regular D* guide still contain the off-air...

    HR20-100 with bad pedigree

Oh well, thanks anyway. Funny though, my first contact with D* BEFORE purchase, the rep told me that they get so many calls for info that they only provide info when I order the new access card. Then, after purchase, another call and another rep said different -why didn't I call? Next time...

    HR20-100 with bad pedigree

When I almost purchased a new HD DVR, I learned that the new models don't have OTA capability (I need to be able to watch local HD when WX knocks out sat coverage.) I was told by D* that they don't have any more HR20s so I found one on eBay for a reasonable price. Well, when trying to order an...

Welcome New Members! (Please Say HI here!)

Hi. Newbie but fast learner Hello, I'm trying to understand more of the DirecTV system and have two HR20s and a high-end Sony HD receiver. Just bought a Birdog 3.0 and don't see the 99 and 103 sats listed. Probably just tune for max on the 101? Been an amateur radio op for over 50 years...
