Did I just hit the jackpot? Or not?

Oh, I'm snagging it hopefully this weekend. Talked to the homeowner, and he's holding it for me due to rain this past weekend. I'm still trying to arrange transport for the dish. I'm kinda a newbie to the whole radio/sat area, but having worked EMS/Fire for a decade and now work IT, when I...

Did I just hit the jackpot? Or not?

The photo's are a little misleading. Tower is only about 30 feet tall. The way it sits, I can disassemble it from the top down and get it off the roof in sections.

Did I just hit the jackpot? Or not?

The tower is a little weathered, but seems solid. The dish is 1 piece steel, weathered but good shape structurally speaking. The LNB was removed, the mount is rusted but solid, and there is a actuator arm about 3 feet long attached (unknown if functional).

Did I just hit the jackpot? Or not?

So, while trolling through the "free" category on Craigslist for my area, I ran across these items free for the taking. Any idea what they would be worth?

Antenna Array Building & Signal Measuring?

Before I get a $600 signal analyzer, I need a Fluke MicroScanner² Cable Verifier and IntelliTone Pro Probe first. I can use that to generate money either at work or on a side job or two. I'm suprised Fluke doesn't make a signal meter/analyzer. Maybe I need to read up on the capabilities of...

Antenna Array Building & Signal Measuring?

Several of my friends have expressed interest in switching to antenna as well, and a couple of them want to try out an Antennacraft HD1850 on a rotor. I'd be interested to see what all it would pick up consistently. Who knows, maybe someday I'll have the room/spare cash for a small tower and...

Antenna Array Building & Signal Measuring?

Oh yeah, I know it's skip for that tower. Might be different if I had an elevated LOS on it, but I must adapt with apartment life for the moment. Sadly, I get the best signal when I point it almost due south, almost 180 degrees from where the towers are. For now, I tend to get most stuff...

Antenna Array Building & Signal Measuring?

The finished product. Lol. I was able to pick up a UHF Iowa Public Television station (KHIN) roughly 110 miles away a couple times. Not that I need that station since locally it is VHF on channel 11, but still pretty cool.

Antenna Array Building & Signal Measuring?

I like to have options. ;) The main reason for a rotor is that I live in a second floor south facing apartment, and my antenna is on my deck (no LOS north). I depend heavily on signal bouncing off buildings to my south and some channels are better pointing in different directions. The...

Antenna Array Building & Signal Measuring?

Ok, I'm new to SAT stuff entirely, but I do know a thing or two about radio communications, but most of that falls into what you can do with it and not how it all works. Background: I worked EMS/Fire for a decade before changing to IT (better pay, but I've always been a computer geek anyway)...

n00b: Polar/HH Mount vs. Azimuth and Elevation??

I've looked into Winegard, and have a antenna combiner from them for my TV antenna rig. If they had something in the 1.2 meter range, I'd probably snag it since it's an Iowa based company. From what I've learned here, I'll probably not go with a az/el mount since there really is no reason for...

n00b: Polar/HH Mount vs. Azimuth and Elevation??

Ahh, ok, now you are speaking something I know about. ;) Can't go 10 years in EMS/Fire and not pick up radio stuff. I've been looking into amateur radio as well, but wanted to square away the entertainment options first. Any recommendations for a 1+ meter dish? I know Winegard makes a 1...

n00b: Polar/HH Mount vs. Azimuth and Elevation??

Fortunately, my deck is south facing. So, if my math is correct, I should be able to hit about every geosynchronous bird available in my geographical area (South Central Iowa) with a good single axis motor and positioner, correct? Aren't there some non geo-sat LEO birds transmitting stuff too...

n00b: Polar/HH Mount vs. Azimuth and Elevation??

So, I'm planning out a FTA setup for my apartment and am looking into 1 meter+ antennas for it. Me being a complete n00b to satellite but an control and feature obsessed IT professional, what would be the best motorized mount for my antenna? I'm sure a polar or HH mount would meet most if not...

    n00b to satalite

Sweet. Thanks. So, what is the smallest sized dish you can pick up C band on? Just curious to see if I have any multi-band possibilities where I live in my apartment or if I'm stuck with KU.

    n00b to satalite

Hey guys and gals, I'm an IT Geek and have been looking into FTA Satellite to add to stuff I can watch since I 86'd cable and stream content typically. I was wondering what is available on C band? I don't think I can get away with a large C band dish where I currently live (south facing...
