I would HIGHLY doubt this receiver is released before next year.

    New Software!

I think with APH1, sling is a known "bug".

    VIP 222 EHD

Call me crazy, but I don't think the 222 is ever going to get EHD support. The 222k will, but not the silver 222.

Can I still activate my old 522?

I wouldn't see why not. It may need to take a new download.

    DVR problems with box 522.

In QAM mode, dual mode is disabled. If you were ever in dual mode while in QAM mode it was a bug.

    722 and 222 chipset changes?

No, not all of the VIP are Broadcom. Currently the 612 and 222 use ST and Conexant, respectively.

    722 and 222 chipset changes?

There are new 222 and 722 coming though. 222 def has new chipset, basically going to be a 722 with no hard drive for reals this time.

    Team Summit: General Assembly Notes

I realize I'm a couple days late but just wanted to point something out. Slinging is not capable on current 722. It isn't just a software update to add this functionality. The reason is basically slinging requires an re-encode of the stream and there is no such hardware in the current 722.

    Dual HD DVR Question

You can record 3 at a time (2 DBS and 1 OTA). There is only 1 HD output on the 622/722, so you can only watch 1 HD program at a time. TV2 can watch a downrezed HD program though.

    TR40 Question

Probably going to see it marketed as a sling product.

    New to Dish and disappointed

This thread is full of xenophobia. Who cares where the call center is located if you got good service?

    VIP622 and QAM

The headend is not "special" Dish hardware. It's is just using a different standard than your standard cable qam. But you are correct that there is no current way to connect a 622 to cable qam. While in qam mode a 622 (or any qbox supported box) does not even pick up regular sat signals...

xfer shows from 622 to 722

It sounded like he wanted to go 622->drive, and then drive -> 722. You can just move the hard drive between the two, but can't use the drive as just a transfer medium and end up with shows in your 722 from your 622.

    Dish Network ViP222 HD Dual-Tuner Receiver: A SatelliteGuys.US Review

There is no heat sink on the 222. You can see the main chip through the slots on the top. It's a Conexant.

xfer shows from 622 to 722

Only problem I can think of is that you can't.

    External Drive Flaw VIP622 VIP722

It sucks, but Dish has never been the best UI people. Maybe with the split, EHC will be able to partner with some company to bring a great interface to the usually solid hardware.

New HDTV upstairs, now I want HD for it too!

It's been mentioned before in this thread, but it bears repeating. The 612 (should be available in Feb or March) is right up your alley. 2 Tuners (no PiP) , DVR, single HDTV output with no backfeed. No word on price yet (or at least that I've heard).

Taking shows from my DVR and putting them on my iPod

You can transfer files from a 622/722 to an Archos PMP, but not to an iPod. You can copy them in real-time with video capture stuff though.

2008 is going to be an interesting year for Echostar to say the least.

Does the 722 uses the same Broadcom chipset that 622 uses?

I don't know about the 622/722. But you are correct about the 222. It doesn't use Broadcom at all.
