    Bummer, Universal Radio is Closing

Been buying ham, shortwave and other items from Universal Radio for decades. End of an era. Happy retirement to the owners and thanks for many happy purchases.

    SDR C/Ku Sniffing?

So how wide is a typical signal, say an FTA signal? Haven't the slightest idea. I have looked at FTA transponders using an HP spectrum analyzer and I guesstimate around 25 megs. However if you look at a spectrum of a typical FTA satellite there are signals of all different bandwidths. Never...

    SDR C/Ku Sniffing?

I wonder if a HackRFOne can display wide bandwidths.

    FlightAware Dongle for ADS-B

Also like the bright orange color, it's hard to misplace amongst the other radio stuff.:)

    FM Filter for SDR dongles

Bought one of these to reduce FM broadcast band interference that can occur when using a SDR dongle. It works pretty well.

    10m Activity This Morning

PSK31 must be old fashioned I guess.

    10m Activity This Morning

The CB band is open here so went down to 10m beacon bands. Heard VE, and 4, 5, and 9 land beacons. QSB on most but it's good to hear some 10m activity. 28.077 is buzzing with digital signals but not sure what they are, PSK31?

    2 meter installation

A little unorthodox but at least there's no need to climb the roof. 3 Element beam is only 9 feet above ground but elevation here is almost 300' ASL

Interesting Little Benchtop Testing Gadget - ADF4351 Sweep Generator

Been fooling with this miniature sweep/signal generator offered on EBay that covers 35 - 4400 mHz. Runs off 5V supply and supplies a sine wave (looks pretty clean). Has a touch screen and you can set the sweep time and sweep increments. Want to see if it is useful for checking filters in...

    HF Antenna Analyzers

Great post Titanium and Michael. Here's a video of another way to "quasi-measure" return loss in an antenna using a noise signal source. Much more complicated though, kind of Rube Goldberg-ish, but fun to try out. By the way those noise generators are sold on Amazon and am awaiting one from...

    FlightAware Dongle for ADS-B

Not sure what mode is used for ADSB, must be software-chosen. N5XZS, you won't have to invoke SDR# when using ADSB programs such as RTL1090 or ADSB#.

    FlightAware Dongle for ADS-B

Well the FlightAware dongle works better than any previous SDR dongles I've used for receiving ADS-B. Definitely see more planes and those farther away. Am using a discone at the moment but an antenna specifically for ADS-B would be better. The transposed coaxial collinear antenna is a good...

    FlightAware Dongle for ADS-B

Not sure of the ADS-B applications of the Airspy OM. First impressions after trying it out last night using a roof mounted discone (25 - 3000 MHz) is that the range is greater than my previous SDR donglle. Am seeing more aircraft than before and farther out, some beyond 250 kM. Am using...

    FlightAware Dongle for ADS-B

Just got the FlightAware ProStick SDR dongle to see if it works any better than the RTL-SDR.com dongle I've been using for the past few years for ADS-B reception. It has an internal LNA to boost the signal at 1090 MHz. In the past I used the RTL-SDR dongle plus an outboard preamp to increase...

Are the few new sunspots making a difference?

Regarding those two sunspots that appeared lately....conditions were pretty dismal on the ham bands until they showed up. The past several days on HF I've heard Europe coming in very well, especially on 30, 20, and 17m, just like the old days when we had a good number of sunspots. Has anyone...

Looking for SDR that will cover 100KHz to 3 GHz ranges

OM you'll have fun, especially since you're a ham. Now you'll be able to see a whole ham band on the screen with the spectral display and waterfall.

    Icom R7100 VHF/UHF Rcvr.

Mike, wish I had read your post sooner. Spent a few hours yesterday morning just changing the two 2032 memory batteries. One is for the clock, other for the 900 memories. The manual was not complete in their description of how to replace 'em; it was much more complicated. I'd say this was the...

    Icom R7100 VHF/UHF Rcvr.

As for it being old and possibly de-tuned I agree. After looking through the service manual though I will do the realignment myself. I like older receivers like the R-7100, it weighs 14 lbs and has a real D'Arsonval S meter, not a cartoon S meter hi hi. SDR is great, been through that...

    Icom R7100 VHF/UHF Rcvr.

Wonder if anyone has or had the Icom R7100 25 MHz - 2 Ghz receiver, and how did they like it? Seems to have good ratings on eham.net. It's an older receiver that users claim has excellent sensitivity. Thanks.

Looking for SDR that will cover 100KHz to 3 GHz ranges

The garden variety SDR dongles do not block the cellular bands as was stated by arlo and that's good because here in NJ there are definitely police comms on the lower end of the band. As for the HackRFOne, I used it only as a broadband receiver with SDR#. but it was designed for other...

Looking for SDR that will cover 100KHz to 3 GHz ranges

I'd have suggested the HackRF One, but it's advertised as covering 1 meg to 6 gigs and costs a lot more than what you have budgeted. I've owned two in the past and found them to be good down to the AM broadcast band. You can use SDR# to run it but not sure about other software. I don't think...

    CountyComm GP-5 SSB ( GEN 3 )

Arm, have been tempted numerous times in the past to take the plunge but never got one. There have been reviews of the CountyComm in The SWLingPost blog, check that out and enjoy the new rcvr. Too bad about the FRG-7, had a few and they are great receivers.
