Hello all,
I would frequent the forum much more if I actually had an HR20 (because I'm pretty sure I can tweak it just as much as everyone else is) but alas, I have an OLD box... Here is my story and cry for help...

I live out in the middle of no where (thats not true but still). We have had DirecTV for about 7 years, using an old single sat system with good signal. I called DirecTV to come upgrade the sat to a LBN 5 and HD DVR, young guy came and said it was a no go unless we put the sat on the garage and buried the line in, not an issue. Second guy comes out, no clue why but oh well. Looks at the garage and says nope, trees are in the way, but we could put it on the barn. Fine, we'll bury that line. Unfortunately the barn is over the signal limit that directv allows (over 140 ft or something). So thats no go...so here I am, brand new HD TV and only OTA HD.

So minus deforestation...anyone want to suggest a way to get HD Sat? Are DishNetworks sats higher in the sky? Can I use a monkey and a mirror to bounce the sat signals?

N00b question: Can i do to radioshack and buy the little plastic degree thingy that they look through and start walking about my property with a ladder?

Stats:
Zip 17003
If needed I can actually give lat and long...

I actually do installs in PA. I just did a gentleman out in the eastern side of NJ where I had to put the KA/KU above the garage/spare house. I then proceded to run 2 runs of dual coax each run was 230 ft aprox. The guy has not had one problem except for a lighting strike taking out his 6 x 8 Switch. You will need a clearance of somewhere around 229 degrees to 245 degrees wide open...36 degree evelation on the 229 side and about 20 on the 245 side.
J
Consider:
Would you sign off on a time and materials deal to install a 5LNB dish if all the indicators on the box said "CLEAR VIEW OF SOUTHERN SKY" and you knew you lived in the woods.
I have been installing in the same few counties long enough to see the problems coming by looking at the address. Still, I meet with customers in the woods and we look up through the trees.
Think chain saw....in rural areas you can trim the leaves with bird shot.......move the tree or the dish...connect the wire...watch the commercials.

Good luck,

Joe

Would make my life SOOO much easier. Anyway, I should actually have a clear view of the moon today. So I'll report back later.

I'm still experimenting with OTA antennas at my new apartment. The mudflap works OK, but we had a dust/wind/rain storm the other day and it all but blew it away. I moved it indoors where the antenna is safer but the signals are marginal.

I bought a traditional Yagi antenna from Amazon and it seems to work more consistently, plus it's meant for outdoors where the mudflap is not.

Anyway, I've had success using umbrella bases paired with a fence post for satellite dishes, and I figured that could work for this as well. I'm just not sure where or what to get and what size pole for this application.

Go to Home Depot and buy a length of "Top Rail" used in making chain link fences. I used a 10' section to mount my Winegard which is probably 4X the size of the yagi you bought from Amazon. It's been up for 15+ years of NM springtime winds and storms with no issues. They make 2 sizes. 1 3/8" and 1 5/8" diameter. Do you have a balcony railing you can clamp to?

BTW does that antenna do VHF HI or is it just UHF?

It does great on VHF. KOAT and KQRE come in good outside

I suppose PVC would probably work also?

I suppose PVC would probably work also?
Yeah, I guess so. I've never tried that though. I'd be concerned with UV deterioration from the NM sun. Some PVC may be UV resistant. I just don't know.
I would be concerned with the heat and its effect on bending of the PVC. I would think at the 1-1/2" O.D. even Schedule 80 wouldn't be stiff enough to prevent movement in a strong wind. It might be too much movement and deteriorate ATSC reception if it's much more than 4' long.

What is the stuff installers use to seal the area around coax point of entry? The Comcast guy used it to seal his RG6 run for broadband. I want to do that for my antenna line..

It's like a clear plastic goo that hardens in a short period of time

It's called "Coax-Seal". I keep a couple rolls, as it always comes in handy.

For what it's worth, I've been using a piece of 1-1/4 white PVC well pipe to mount a 90cm dish to a 4x4 post as a temporary mount. Almost 9 years later it's still there and has not degraded in the sun (CT sun might not be as harsh as in NM, but still, that thing is in the sun for most of the day)

One of my coworkers found a 6-foot piece of top rail in the garage today.

With the 1st Quarter Report just released, Dish lost another 180,000, now at 4.84 Million.

Sling now at 1.79 million subscribers, down approximately 190,000.

For comparison, YouTube TV now has about double the subscribers of Dish and Sling combined.

Why would Musk even want them?

Why would anyone pay anything for two providers that lose a million or more subscribers every year each?

Maybe Elon thinks satellite TV will do a come back. I bet he has a Hopper 3 and loves it. Apps keep going up on prices and you need more than one app to see everything you want to see. I think Satellite is the way to go.

My Joey 4 is installed on a bedroom tv.

The diamond buttons had been reset.

I thought this was unusual.

I had to reprogram the double diamond button for PIP which I watch.

No problem.

PIP feature on the Joey 4 had been used to watch two channels at once which I thought was the limitation being only two channels vs.Hopper 3's multi-view four channels.

This time when I selected the PIP feature I noticed an option for Multi-View?

Could this be?

Yes it could.

This software update does this.

Multi-view PIP (4 channels) Is Now Available on Joey 4.

This is freaking awesome and very surprising!!!

Very wonderful for me.

Unfortunately do to NDA's I can't discuss beta features until they are released to the public. But lets just say the DISH team is doing some amazing work. :)

Received this e-mail 3 days ago... At the bottom, it says limited to one Multi-view session per household. How does it work if someone had Hopper 3, Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus, Wired Joey 4 and a Wireless Joey 4 for example? Can they all do Multi-view session at the same time?

That's because the one good thing the administration is doing is finally going after the fake and non-domiciled CDL drivers, opening the door to hire more valid drivers and hopefully will push the rates back up.

now let's get rid of the piss tanks and tampons off of diesels aka emissions crap since it can bankrupt someone!!! and get rid of ELD'S since they make some drivers drive like idiots trying to find a parking spot. starter mega carriers should not allow new drivers to train that's just a way for em to move cheap freight..

Ok, I'm bored .... actually - to be more precise - I'm bored of eating the same rotation of 9 or 10 meals that are currently my "go-to" meals. My wife works the long hours - I work from home as and when i feel like it ... which means i generally do most of the cooking ... and so by default - i also make out the shopping list ...

We cook at home 5 or even 6 nights a week - but we always seem to fall back on the same old tried and tested "quick and easy but tastes ok" meals. Week in week out.

Pot Roast - mash and Peas.
Spaghetti
Chicken Pasta in cheese sauce.
Curry & rice
(these are some of mine)

Now it's not that I'm not adventurous in the kitchen ... I'll try anything once or twice ... but we all do it. Unless your name is Martha Stewart or Rachel Ray .. we all eventually fall back on our 8-10 favorite "meals"

So i thought - if we shared some of our own go-to meals with each other ... we might be able to add a few "new" ones to our own arsenal of meals.

So again - I ask you ...

What's for dinner tonight ?

Please give me something new to add to my rotation ... its our weekly shop tomorrow - so i want to pull together a few idea's and try and eat a meal each day next week that I've never had before .. or at least something that is not on my current "go-to" meal plan.

What meal do you always seem to fall back on in your house ? Maybe its something that I've never tried or not had in a while. I need inspiration !! I've got a blank shopping list in front of me - and nothing sounds good .. HELP !

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Recently had a Hopper 3 installed and noticed that I have a green bar at the top of my screen, also occasionally a thin green line on the right side. I have tried switching hdmi ports on the tv as well as different cables. My only thought is that it is the age of the TV. Thoughts and suggestions?

Tried the Adjust Screen settings and the green bar was still present. Did have a random day when the green bar was gone, but it came back. Did look at the TV setting and found I could stretch the screen a little where the green bar was gone, but it does cut off things across the edges of the picture slightly. Likely will start shopping for a new TV as mine is close to 20 years old and the Dis Remote doesn't seem to like the TV.

Thanks to all for the suggestions.

I suggest you get an LG Oled 4k TV. You will love the picture on this thing from all angles in the room. The picture is the best I've seen ever. I have the B 3 series 55 inch TV and it was on sale in the fall of 2024 for like $749.00 - because they sell off their older models when they reach end of year.

I even bought one for my parents. They had a huge living room and sit at the weirdest angles with their furniture and the viewing angle was a problem using just about any TV we tried, but not with the LG Oled Tv. They love the picture. Walmart sells them and so does Amazon.
