I live in Atlanta, but I'm going to be in the Detroit area next weekend.

I'm thinking about driving over to Windsor to FutureShop and picking up a DSR505 system.

Does anyone think I might encounter a problem with US Customs?

nope. ExpressVu they sign you up right there and you need a Canadian address and a SIN (Social ID Number)

Dont get me wrong...for the dish for SC you have 2 options
-if all you want is the main programming, get a 30" dish and a KU LNB at one of the sponsers at the top of the page
-if you want both (2nd satellite is mainly HD) then get the dish directly from kusat.com

When did they start requiring a SIN?
I know you need an address, but didn't think they required a SIN. At least I never gave one. No biggee, as I can always give my wifes.

Under Canadian Law the only ones "legally" allowed to see your SIN or ask for it is the Bank for banking and tax purposes, the feds/province for taxes and other government things and your employer. Anyone else is NOT LEGALLY allowed to ask or see your SIN number.

Now I'm not sure how this done in the with your SIN or what ever its called who is "legally" allowed to see or ask for it.

Are they not legally allowed, or you cannot be compelled to answer?

In the US, it seems that there are a handful of circumstances where you can be required to divulge your Social Security Number, but many others where you can refuse (but they can also refuse whatever service/product they were otherwise going to sell/provide because of that).

There not allowed to ask for it by LAW unless there are approved by the government and Bell isn't one of them. Now if you give that info on your own thats up to you but legally your not required to do so.

a lot of places "try' and get away with it. Problem is some people are not aware of the law and give out that info. Like I said I'm not sure what the 'law' is for the US but here falls under the Privacy Act and some other government regulation. Now unless some thing has changed and I'm not aware of it, but giving yourr out your SIN number opens up your "personal" file with all finacle info and stuff like that.

The US has the same law in regards to SSN's, but a business also has a right not to do business with you, that's how they get around the law. You either show them the number (for a credit check), or they don't do business with you.

Big box retailers in Canada do require a drivers' license to buy a receiver, but there is a way around this, just prove you have a legal address, hydro bill typically works, that's what I've used in the past.
I
I've only been asked for a driver's license when when buying a BEV receiver... but a Georgia license will kill the deal too. You will need a Canadian billing address. *C is the best bet. *C reception is better in the southern US and *C is not as uptight about southern subscribers. Mail order a good bet for any satellite equipment. Dishes are cheap on eBay. Kusat also has dishes and other hardware. I've purchased from them several times.

BEWARE!

This past year I was crossing the US/Canadian border at the NY/Ontario border while coming back with a 100% legit Shaw Direct receiver that I had purchased from a retail store (not a shady broker or anything). After I did nothing more than explain to them that I was merely shopping and that I had purchased an "HDTV Receiver" without giving too much detail. I was asked repeatedly why I was going all the way to Canada just to shop, and more specifically what was "so special" about the receiver that you would drive all the way to Canada for it. They seemed more concerned with the illegal importation of FTA receivers, even though It was a 100% legit purchase and I had all the accompanying store receipts + serial numbers on the receiver FULLY available for their inspection. Not only was I held up at the border for 45 minutes, I had to sit in a waiting room while my car was searched. Even the contents of my video camera and other electric devices (cell phone) were reviewed. I did research after the trip and found multiple complaints about how the 4th Amendment did not apply at the border and that they have the right without a warrant to search any and all electric devices such as Laptops, Video Cameras, Cell Phones, and yes Satellite Receivers at the border. If you crossing the border, make sure its a legit purchase. I was eventually told that I was "free to go." I just wanted to post this because I reviewed this very thread before planning that trip after finding out that others had little to no problems. Hopefully, this saves somebody else from going through what I had to go through last year...

interesting. thanks for sharing. the good thing is that your equipment was not seized. i imported a 630 and 605 this past summer and didn't have any problems like that. we were in Canada for week visiting friends and family. we crossed in Sarnia.

I thought I would come here and find lots of complaints about the update to the dish anywhere mobile app, but am not seeing any. It used to look just like the desktop webpage. Now you can no longer filter by sports channels or movie channels. Plus that they made it look like a big button telephone and you see fewer channels in the screen which requires more scrolling. Yes I realize you can look at sports then select which sport you want to look at, I just liked being able to see all sporting events in the guide with all other channels being filtered out. Am I alone in the wilderness on this?

I like the new look, it's a lot cleaner. I'm using it on one of those Onn streaming devices when I travel.

Yes a lot cleaner, glossier, and less functional. Someone trying to justify why they are making a big salary. "See look shiny"

Seems in some ways better. Nicer layout, as others said maybe cleaner. Moving ahead in the guide is better.

Apple has finally released their Apple TV 4K with built-in Siri and a microphone so it can respond to your queries even if you don't have the remote. It also increases in price, to $299. I had been planning on updating my current Apple TV 4K streamers, but that's $600 for the two of them, and that's a pass at this point.

At $299, it had better come with 256 GB of Storage, Gigabit (or better) Ethernet, the latest HDMI tech and standards, and one year of free Apple One. But it probably won't…

Meh. The 4Ks I have will do everything that these do that I need them to do.

Which that's most tech these days for anything released the last four to five years.

It's honestly a testament to how good the previous gen Apple TVs were and are.

Don't tell them that. They'll adopt planned obsolescence.

Not a bit. IMO, Apple's are slow to boot up. Time is about the same with 1st gen and 3rd. Roku runs rings around them in that department. I only reason I stuck, is the Apple infrastructure, which has it's definite advantages. But $300 is a deal breaker. Later, Apple!

they all do that anyways.. ever notice your cell phone slows down when you come up for an upgrade.. :what. apple's been making money off of software and not hardware for a while

Yeah, they boot up a bit slower than Roku, but the OS does a lot more, so it makes sense. How often are you booting them up that is a differentiator? Aside from OS updates, mine are on all the time. I will say the ATV4K is generally quicker than the Roku Ultras I have, when it comes to launching apps and responsiveness, not that the Roku is sluggish.

What software? For iPhones? I tried to buy some image s/w IN THE APPLE STORE! They had none, and could not offer ANY s/w for iPhones

I assume you mean services, like iCloud and Apple Music, and not actual software sales. Services have been growing quickly for Apple, but hardware still brings home the bacon. As for where Apple's revenue comes from, the iPhone is still king with 49.58% of revenue as of June 2026. Services comes in second with 28%. iPad, Mac, and Wearables/Home makes up the rest. So, that is 72% coming from hardware. Their profit margin is around 25%, FWIW.

I am skeptical the AppleTV 4k makes them much money on the hardware though, which I suspect is what you were getting at.

Several Dish offers showed up today in my account. Once you choose one the rest are removed. Offers were Showtime, Starz, AMC and others.

Just checked my account and it shows mgm+ at 8.00 per month, but that has red line drawn thru it and shows 0.00 per month. But it doesn't say how long this lasts,...... 1 month, 3 months, forever. I called customer service to get an answer, and they said nothing like that exists. Should I add the offer or not? Already paying them too much, but want to take advantage of something free.

Not for me, mines has no mention of how long aka the offer period and the Terms and conditions the $0.00 is good for. All I see is one can lose $5.00 if you decide to remove it before day 31 after you add it to the account.

You have a different offer that is free for a shorter timeframe which is different than the one that I and bnewt saw without defining the promotion period as I sent the question to DISH Care via Facebook Messenger and this is the response I got back 20 minutes ago.

No. Bring in someone new.🤔 Tony is not serious enough for me. Parker is too close to the team and Tim is too young to take over IMO.

I don't think Tim and Tony are that far apart in Age ...

Remember what Tony said to Tim when they first got back together ...
Tony said: I am the New Tony, Tim .... (something to that effect)

Tony has changed, he's been running his Security Business ... I'm sure he has grown up.

Give it time ... your judging the New Tony from the old Tony.

It sounds like Tim won't be around the Team much longer either.
