Hey guys. Need some help from the more experienced HD OTA Antenna gurus please.

I live in Lexington, NC and my locals all come from the Greensboro, NC market. DISH does not offer my locals in HD yet, so I am wanting to go with the OTA route. I checked antennaweb, and it lists me as around 22-23 miles away from all my towers except the NBC tower which it lists as 32 miles away. For everything but FOX, it lists me as needing a yellow-uhf antenna. But for FOX, it suggests a red-uhf.

Using this information, what antenna would you guys suggest? I have called around and was told the Winegard Squareshooter would get everything great except maybe FOX, which is listed as red-uhf, but is only 22 miles away. Do you guys think I could get even FOX with the Squareshooter based on those numbers?

Also, has anyone actually ever had DISH do the antenna install as mentioned in the thread in these forums? I did not know if they will even put one up for me in my market.

Any help would be great. Thanks!

ota antenna for hd

I too, need advice on OTA antenna - our tv towers broadcast from 2 different directions - some east some west - and I can't seem to adjust it to get all the staions well, just a few well. Football is on my WEAKEST channel, so I am trying to figure out what to do. Have a pretty good sized roof top antenna. Also - why can I get more channels on the OTA plugged direct into my HDTV than running through my dish 622 vio receiver?

I would use 2 directional antennas, each pointed in the appropriate direction, and combine them with a splitter.

Combining 2 antennas *can* be more trouble than it's worth.
For varcieri:
What distance are you talking about (east and west). If the stations are directly opposite each other, you can take the reflector off a CM4228 and it will lobe out the "back" side almost as well as the front. This WILL shorten the effective distance out the "front", but not terribly so.

And for anyone wondering, yes, I've done this myself. I picked up Toronto at about 45 miles off the back of my CM4228 with reflector removed. I decided I don't watch Toronto stations enough to bother with this arrangement so I put it back on.

Normally if you have stations split like that, you should get a rotor for the antenna. I use a universal remote (using a Harmony 880 currently) and you can get rotor/control combos that "remember" station directions. Or even just get one with presets. the universal then includes the command to "go to preset 1" when you are on channel 2 (for example) and "go to preset 2" when you are on channel 7.1. Sounds to me like you would only need "east" and "west" but as long as you have a rotor you could fine tune it for each of the east stations individually if you want and also the same for the west stations.
markcosenza
The only problem I'd personally have with this solution is for recording purposes. My DVR can't set the presets for me. I think the splitter solution would resolve that.

Ahh... I see what you're saying. Unattended. Yeah that would be a wee bit tougher nut to crack. However.... and I'm doing this from memory as my dad and my brother used to really be into building antennas.... when you have more than one antenna being joined at a "splitter" it would only be by the purest dumb luck that you get the 2 antennas in phase without equipment to measure signal. If you put them on the same mast, with one facing east and one facing west, you can not put them back-to-back. You have to stack them. If Antenna "A" and antenna "B" are exactly the same antenna, then the next thing you'd need to do is get the leads from each antenna at exactly the right length before the splitter.

What you're talking about is building an antenna array (even if it IS only 2 antennas) and if not done well, it will suck. In fact you can actually have it so far off that one antenna will basically cancel the signal of the other.

I am literally digging back about 35 years into my memory, but I believe what I have stated is fact. If I'm wrong, and someone knows better, I ain't afraid to take a hit. But please "remind" me gently 'cause I'm old and right now ... very tired. :)
E
I am sure you are right about back-to-back. However, I've read about installations in the AVS forum that used 2 identical antennas (bay type) with a splitter/combiner with good success. It could also be that weren't co-located.
cparker
Notice those that are doing it and area successful *usually* have equipment and experience building arrays. Notice also how many failures there are. Also some of the less experienced folks having success are A.) copying the success of the experienced ones and/or B.) being heavily coached by the experienced folks.

It really isn't a slap-'em-together proposition. What you're essentially doing is taking a primarily unidirectional antenna and duplicating/assembling a multidirectional (note: not OMNI-directional) array.

Can it be done?.....Absolutely.

Can "anyone" do it? .... probably not with any kind of high degree of success.

You can COPY someone else's success exactly and STILL get smoked by a nearby tree (that YOU have, but that THEY didn't) that puts ONE antenna slightly out of phase.

If you have a few bucks and want to try it... more power to ya. You might find a sweet spot relatively quickly. Or you could waste a lot of time and still not have what you want. :)

sorry.... I honestly don't mean to pee in anyone's cheerios. But if I were a betting man and we're talking about an inexperienced person (to building antenna arrays) being successful at this by chance and luck. My money would be on failure (sorry).

If they READ about this and buy (or borrow) some proper measuring equipment, then I think it's a lot more likely they'll have success and I'd change my bet :)

Well, the bag can't weigh that much, right? But by law food product packaging must display the actual net weight of the product, i.e., the contents of the container, so by any logic, if not law, a store's stated per-ounce cost should reflect that figure. But since there's not any law regulating shelf statements, a store can say whatever it wants without violating any rules. So I guess the answer is more consumer legislation. Or simply caveat emptor.

I would think that the Vendor/Maker of the product would have a say in it, showing the Correct weight ...
You would think it would be in the contract.

I do look at the ounces of items, but unless its way off, I don't check the math, may have to start now.

Remember when you use to get a 13.5 oz bag of Chips .... Thats a PARTY Size now.

Vanilla Bean, French Vanilla, Cookies and Cream, Mud Slide and Strawberry

I will try the Strawberry and see what I think, IF the Sugar isn't any more than 22g ... it's Quite expensive.

Target does show it, cheaper, $5.99, however thier website says Not Sold in Store, closest store that carries it is 39 Miles away ....

I was reading this article

That said this-
Last summer, for the first time, streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime claimed the largest share of the television viewing audience, surpassing both cable and broadcast TV. Streaming captured 34.8 percent of July viewers, according to Nielsen data, compared to 34.4 percent for cable and 21.6 percent for broadcast.

And then, sometime in the second half of 2022, cord-cutters became the majority. The share of cable and satellite television subscribers dipped to 48 percent, according to a report from Samba TV, a television technology company.

Now I do not consider those with YTTV and the likes, Cord Cutters, but they still do not have Traditional Cable/Satellite delivered Live TV, so I decided to do the math.

There are, now, 129 Million Households in the United States.

In 2015, there were 100 Million Cable/Sat Subscribers , no streaming Live TV Service.

Today, there are 66 Million Live TV subscribers, including Cable, Satellite and Streaming.

Roughly, Streaming Live TV has 14 Million subs including all of them.

So that means, Cable/Satellite now has, roughly, 51 Million Households

So in just 8 years, lost 49% of their subscribers and by the end of this year, expected sub count to be, roughly, 45 million households.

That means a total loss of 55% since 2015 at the end of 2023.

But out of 129 Million households, 45 million will mean only 35% will get Cable/Satellite Delivered Live TV by the end of 2023.

Imagine what 2024 will be like.

Nielsen Streaming Ratings: Third-party measurement firm Nielsen tracks U.S. streaming viewership, releasing weekly reports that measure total minutes viewed across major television sets, broken down by program (such as original, acquired, and movie content) rather than minute-by-minute audience retention curves.

Nobody is "happy" or "sad" about this. Simply posting data in an non-editorialized way has nothing to do with anyone's feelings.

The data on the streaming side is immensely accurate, I'm guessing to the millisecond. Plus most people likely have not turned off data sharing and thus they are grabbing a huge swath of data. Much more accurate than cable which relies on a smaller sample size and probably not to the second.

In either case, nobody is getting "double counted" because it's usage based. If I watch 100 minutes of content and 30 minutes is on Youtube and 20 minutes on Disney and 50 minutes on YTTV, it's going to show up as 30%, 20%, 50% slices of my personal pie respectively.
Q.

Neilson does the Broadcast/Cable ...
Nielsen does. If you go into the settings of any of your streaming accounts, you can turn off the option to share to usage data with their third party measuring service - Nielsen.

Have you tried a new power brick on your Amiko? It's slim pickings out there anymore. The FTA market in the US has pretty much been abandoned.

This would likely be your best bet, and Rick is a good seller. I've never had any issues with him:

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....
