This is not an HD Lite thread.

With all the claims that DirecTV is about to launch a hundred HD channels, I decided I should once again revisit what they are doing with their PQ. Many have claimed they improved it. My method is to compare equal channels with Dish Network.

I looked at HDNet, HDNET Movies, and Discovery HD Theater for starters. I did this A/B comparison over the past 6 days.

All three channels on DirecTV appeared sharper and brighter than Dishnetwork, which could be said to be "softer" than DirecTV.
On a quick glance this is what one sees, even a blind test- which is a better picture, the call would go to DirecTV.
However, upon closer look, I discovered DirecTV's channels were actually white clipped and black stretched. The Dish channels were properly balanced in the upper and lower luminance regions. Both appeared to have the same amount of detail in the middle of the luminance spectrum.
What this clipping and black stretch does is make the image "brighter" with more luster, however, it also causes a suffer of lost detail in the shadows and lost detail in the whites that Dish Network retains.

If this were just one channel, I would have said something is out of adjustment, but since this was on three channels and over several days period of time, I have to credit DirecTV with making this mis-adjusted picture intentionally as a policy or they have some newbie in engineering who just needs to be watched over. I hope DirecTV can fix this. Meanwhile I will be looking at other channels PQ with not just detail but also the level of white clip and black stretch being added.

Another thought is that DirecTV is using the same logic as monitors are set at for in store sales vs in home viewing. The brightness and contrast is cranked way up for in store viewing. Since D* cannot adjust my monitor in the my home they have adjusted the picture before sending. Unfortunately when it is adjusted before airing, I can't pull that detail in those clipped and stretched regions back to normal. It is lost.

Thanks, very helpful info.

Itll be interesting to see how the mpeg4 nationals look soon.

Is there any input yet on whether the HD nationals on the new bird will be 1280,1440 or 1920?

Doesn't much matter to me as I only have a 1280x720p tv :)

Last question(I think), is there a "uplink activity report" like we see on E*?

I am suspicious of that. I suspect that 1920x1080 = 2.07 million small square pixels converted to 1280 x 720p looks better than 1280x1080 = 1.38 million larger rectangular pixels converted to 1280 x 720p? Just my guess.

Honestly that is what Ive read on AVS, that a display will always look better if you send it more info than it needs.

Now in my situation (720p 46" tv with 10-12ft of view distance), I dont feel Ill see differences. 1080p is another issue, you either need a much larger screen and/or must be sitting closer to really get the effect IMHO.

I wont buy another tv, Im going projector next time, hope to get a 1080p prob late 2008.

My thinking is that this is a hold over from the analog video days. It doesn't hold true for digital video. We always knew that if you shoot a scene with an 850 line camera and record to component analog tape such as Betacam SP and then make a VHS dub of that video it looks much better than if you shot the scene with a VHS camcorder ( 230 line) directly. One would think that since we end up at 230 lines VHS resolution, both would be the same but the fact is shooting with the larger format camera puts the VHS camcorder to shame when comparing both on VHS.

With digital the math is different. In analog we have an infinite number of possible pixels since the analog video is continuous voltage based, not pixel based. The ability to carry the higher resolution along in the transfer to a lower tape format or lower pixel range offers no better picture in the final video. In other words, a camera that shoots 720x1280 image and output to 320x240 will look the same as if that camera shot the image at 320x240 in the first place. With digital your limited by integer math, with analog you have a chance the circuit will respond, so to speak, of the detail that may remain in the transfer but if you use a low format camera that will not be there in the first place.
TheForce
Back on topic-

To clarify, my test was indeed done with MP2 channels as that is all I can receive now on D*. However, knowing a bit about TV production, I felt the artifact I listed, white clip and black stretch to make the video look brighter, would be upstream of the mp2 or mp4 encoding process. Meaning that this choice to make the picture look this way has little to do with MP4 vs. MP2. Those of you who can receive the same channel on both and know what to look for, can offer your observations. Not sure that is even possible. You would need both MP4 and MP2 receivers and control each on each transmission to tell.

Maybe the real complaint I have is that this practice is not producing a good quality picture but rather a more vibrant one. I thought I equated it to the monitor in store adjustment vs, at home adjustment. The detail is there but lost in the white clip areas. The detail is there in the blacks but at some point in the shadows it is gone compared to the same image on Dish Network's picture. Yes, in this respect it was a comparison of DN to DTV. But the DN image was less vibrant and more regions of the picture with detail. Take your choice! :)

Just out of curiosity, when you do these side-by-side comparisons, are you viewing both sources via HDMI, or is it HDMI on one and Component on the other? And even if it is identical inputs, are the various inputs both calibrated the same? My TV allows/requires distinct variations of settings on all inputs, even both HDMI; rather than a "this applies to all HDMI inputs".

When walmart set a price...they weigh the container and the product...the product label only shows the weight of the product...I am sure if you brought your own plastic baggies to bring the product home you could get the cheaper price

Well, the bag can't weigh that much, right? But by law food product packaging must display the actual net weight of the product, i.e., the contents of the container, so by any logic, if not law, a store's stated per-ounce cost should reflect that figure. But since there's not any law regulating shelf statements, a store can say whatever it wants without violating any rules. So I guess the answer is more consumer legislation. Or simply caveat emptor.

Well, according to the price per ounce on that first bag of coffee he mentions, that would mean the bag weighed over 6 ounces. That bag does NOT weigh 6 ounces. According to Google, an empty bag weighs half an ounce.

You need to weigh the actual bag...a deli bag weighs less than that but a thick coffee bag is gonna weigh around an ounce...an empty tin can has some weight

Unless the specific product or its packaging is known at the time of weighing, estimating the tare weight for a PoS system is a tall order.

I'm pretty sure that produce bags can't get any thinner. ;)

You certainly don't want to put unbagged produce on a belt, scale, or in a clerk's hands (gloved or not).

I would think that all the packaging would already be accounted for ... they weigh the container, subtract that from the scale, then add the product , so its weighing the Product only

Obviously you didn't read my post.....google says a coffee bag weighs half an ounce. But let's say you are correct and it DOES weigh a full ounce, that would still fall 5 ounces shy for Walmart's numbers to match.

It appears we are not getting both home & away feeds out of market on League Pass for these teams either…

I've been watching the Spurs home feed on channel 676-1 (was part time San Antonio specific feed) out of market with NBALP for YEARS on satellite (through the multiple iterations of Fox Sports SW, Bally Sports SW, FanDuel Sports SW) Looks like that will not happen unless a deal is reached with DAZN. I do see the placeholder channel on 680 if it happens.

Center Ice does have the non-carried feeds, including the Hurricanes, Wild, Blues and Blue Jackets and spotbeam local only teams like the Panthers, Mammoth and Golden Knights. So it probably depends on the available part time bandwidth each night as things they are able to provide to in market viewers in the 600s, PPV Events in the 100s and commercial events in the 9000s get priority first, along with games where neither team has a remappable feed.
coolman302003
League Pass tonight for example (it is almost a full slate tonight):
Hawks @ Magic (only Hawks feed which is easy to insert since its OTA this season and simulcast across multiple Gray Television markets, Magic signed a non- exclusive streaming deal with DAZN and also OTA)
Bucks @ Wizards (only Wizards feed easy to remap, Bucks are OTA & there own streaming service Bucks+)
Hornets @ Nets (only Nets feed which DirecTV already carries so simply YES remap, Hornets signed non-exclusive streaming deal with DAZN, also OTA)
Bulls @ Raptors (Bulls only feed via CHSN remap, its common that we don't get Raptors feeds that often)
Jazz @ Grizzlies (Jazz only feed OTA easy to insert, Grizzlies signed streaming deal with DAZN)
Pacers @ Pelicans (Pelicans only feed which is OTA easy to insert, Pacers signed streaming deal with DAZN)

Maybe it will change but it looks like DirecTV may only carry DAZN feeds on NBA LP when there is no other option, such as when two teams (either Cavaliers, Pacers, Grizzlies, Timberwolves, Spurs) that are both DAZN exclusive are playing each other, we shall see as the season goes on I guess.

This NBA season will be the first in a long time where many League Pass games are carried on feeds DirecTV doesn't normally carry or are only available through OTA spot beams. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out, especially whether we eventually get both home and away feeds for these teams out of market again.

Luckily my DTV stream package doesn't have a rsn fee. Figure DTV that always says is the leader in sports would have come to an agreement by now.

Greenville-New Bern is $11.99 for MASN (Orioles) and Nationals
Raleigh is $11.99 for MASN and Nationals
Charlotte is $12.99 for BravesVision, MASN, Nationals and Reds

The fee in NC also includes the higher in state rate they have to pay for ACCN. Down in SC the fee is $15.99 as they are also a SEC state.
I'm not sure if they're doing it with those teams, but in some markets they also use the fee to cover the additional cost they have to pay for independents and MyNet stations that picked up full season NHL and NBA rights.

If you go to the TVPromise site, you'll likely be able to get a credit for not getting the Hurricanes and additional Hornets games that air on WITN-D2

Figure DTV that always says is the leader in sports would have come to an agreement by now.
Part of the hold out might be the packaging and price for outer areas like how the Thunder needs sports pack for other states. Hopefully they are also pushing for a guarantee from the teams that they would require whoever wins their local broadcasting rights in 2028 to negotiate with MVPDs. Commercial distribution rights are probably a factor too.

I'm guessing they got a deep discount for the Clippers based on how long it took them to officially announce ClipperVision and their KTLA simulcasts after they were basically handed a multi-year draft death penalty.

The Predators and Pistons channels are using feeds supplied by Scripps Sports

The Heat likely depends on whoever they sign for the Fort Myers DMA, as there's no point in paying a high price for the Heat just for that DMA when WPLG is streaming it for free on their app and website for viewers in the Miami DMA, and they already carry the West Palm Beach station.

I tried this with both the Hurricanes and Hornets since I'm in upstate SC, and wasn't offered any kind of credit by the site. It's not a huge deal to me as I can pick up WSOC/WAXN over the air at my location even though I'm outside the Charlotte market.

Browns. 1st place in the North. Yup. Believe it or not

Chiefs. Undefeated.

Titans. Won a game ! .... Colts I know, but still.

Saints. Won a game after a while.

Steelers. Having the same season they always have. They somehow find wins on their way to an unceremonial 1st round exit. Mike Tomlin is proud.

Cards. Won a game without scoring a single touchdown

Broncos. How they manage to win games with the dogshit offense they have should be studied.

Bears. Caleb's back and so is their mojo.

Goats

NFC East. For the 2nd straight week no team from this clown show of a division won a game. Eagles are cooked without Hurts. Who's not that good anyway. Commanders suck, Dallas is well ..... Dallas and the Giants have no QB.

Ravens. Lamar is out (as usual). But still. Losing to the Browns is never ok.

Chargers. Still can't win.

Rams. So much for the powerhouse team. They are 2 games under .500

Seattle. Lost to the offenseless Broncos.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

17 years ago the US turned off analog OTA signals in favor of digital broadcasting. Now the push is ATSC 3 "Nextgen TV". But nobody seems to be able to agree on DRM implementation protocols. People don't want to hook their TV up to the internet in order to watch over the air TV. At least I don't. With all the data they collect about your viewing habits the box should be given away at no cost.

It's dead, they just don't know it yet. They killed it by forcing DRM on it, and that TOTALLY botched implementing it.

There is absolutely NO compelling reason for anybody to switch to ATSC3.0. They only want it as a total and complete money grab.

What bothers me is the total waste of broadcasting spectrum in this very crowded market. It has been almost three years now since KFOX converted their broadcast tower to ATSC 3.0 and moved all of their channels to other towers causing noticeable degradation of the picture quality.
I have a Sony TV with 3.0 capabilities but still use the 1.0 version of locals due to the fact that one or all of the 3.0 channels are often missing or unwatchable. In this city of 800K I doubt that more than a few hundred even know about ATSC 3.0.
The only thing that could motivate me to be interested in 3.0 would be if all of the minor networks (diginets) could be in at least 720P rather than blurry ultra-compressed 480i.
Three years is long enough to waste one of the few available RF frequencies in the area for this trial.
It is time to either move on with this experiment or call it quits.
