IMHO, the Number One Myth spun around in this format "war" is that "For High-Def Optical Media to survive, there has to be only one format". Or, spun another way: "The format war creates consumer confusion, and reluctance to buy either until there is one clear winner!"

This of course the rallying cry of Blu-ray - who conveniently feels that since they currently have a little more studio support, considerably more CE company support, and a current 61/39% (since inception) lead in the 1% of DVD sales HD currently enjoys - they are the logical choice and HD DVD should do us all a favor just die already. And one of their main cheerleaders is Bill Hunt of The Digital Bits, who claims to not really care which format wins - but for the reasons above, Blu-ray is the logical choice.

While I own both an HD DVD player and a PS3 for Blu-ray, I have always preferred and supported HD DVD for many reasons. I also believe both formats can and will survive, and does not create any meaningful consumer confusion. But, what about this #1 Myth that the vast majority of consumer aren't buying either Blu-ray or HD DVD until this format "war" is over and there is a clear winner?

In this week's Sept. 2-8 Home Media Magazine (available online for free at Nxtbook) there is an article on Page 1 entitled "Forget about the Format War - Indifference Reigns". It's about a research study conducted by Warner Home Video. The study, representing more than 1,000 consumers, found that 48% of respondents were indifferent to buying either Blu-ray or HD DVD movies Also, 31% cited prices as barrier to entry, and only 21% mentioned competing formats as significant challenges.

That's only 1 out of 5 of all consumers are hesitant to buy a Hig-Def player because of the "format war". Almost half of all consumers couldn't care less about either one of them - they're apparently perfectly happy watching VHS or standard DVD, or re-runs of "I Love Lucy" Nickelodeon.

OK, but what about owners of HDTV's - surely they give a gosh darn about this format war being over so they can rush right out and buy a HD player? Guess again.
Among consumers with an HDTV, 58% said they had no need for an HD player; 46% said prices were too high and 23% said they lacked enough information about either format to make an informed purchase. Twenty-seven percent said they would wait out the format war for a clear winner. The survey found that regarding HD player pricing, "purchase positive" consumers were willing to pay slight more ($239) than "non-positive" consumers at $166.

It's even worse! Almost 6 out of 10 owners who already have an HDTV don't feel any need for either Blu-ray or HD DVD. They're apparently perfectly happy watching HBO, Showtime or HD Movie Net in HD from the cable or satellite TV company. Almost half think that if they were going to buy an HD player, current prices are too dang high! Only slightly more than one quarter of them are those folks waiting for a "clear winner" in the highly touted format war. :o

So much for the #1 myth that the majority of consumers are waiting for this format war to be over before buying one. Well over half don't see a need for a high-def player. Almost half have some interest, but think prices are too high to justify a purchase. But a $166 High-Def player does seem to be the sweet spot, even for those not really all that interested.

But, the Blu-ray group doesn't seem to be in any hurry to get there. The same article quotes Andy Parsons, spokesperson for the Blu-ray Disc Association. Parsons said high-def packaged media remains in the "early-adopter phase", and questioned why HD DVD has been aggressively cutting the prices of its players. "You don't see people heading down to Best Buy because there is a cheap player available," he said. "They go down because they want to see high-def content. That's when you want to have price reductions."

Well, with Chinese HD DVD players hitting stores this holiday season with a $199 MSRP, I guess we'll find out who's right. ;)

No. $1000 for a player is ridiculous! I have a hard time paying more than $50 for a regular DVD player.

Am I a cheap tight wad? Nope. I have some very nice expensive equipment. I just will not buy something when the future of the entire technology is in doubt any more. :)

Well, let's see here:

No Name for $19.99 with every feature the $150 players have. Buy three in case the first two are bad and you still spent half.
Coby Super Slim Progressive Scan DVD Player hhgregg.com

Want a brand name? How about a Sony with component output for $60
Sony Progressive Scan Single-Disc DVD Player (Black) hhgregg.com

How about another no-name with every feature a $200 player has INCLUDING HDMI output and 1080i scaling for $35?
Spectron IQ with HDMI Digital Output (Video Upscaling Up to 1080i) hhgregg.com

That took 10 seconds to find. I'm sure if I looked a little harder I could find a few dozen players that fit the bill. I am currently using a CyberHome $10 DVD player with component output and coaxial DD. Looks and sound as good as any other DVD player out there for 20 times the price!

But we digress. I would be willing to pay $200-$300 for a high def (generic term) DVD player if I knew that the format was going to stick around longer than Beta, 8-tracks and DiVX. :D

That is not going to happen until there is a clear "winner".

Again the difference between this war and the previous wars is availability of titles and the movie industry picking sides and making exclusive deals.

Tony,

Life's short. You probably drop two bills in a month going out to eat with the wife and kids. Toshiba A-2 can be had for a little over $200.00 with 8 free movies. With today's technology advancements, every format will eventually be yesterday's betamax. Besides no matter how the format war pans out, the HD-DVD player is an awesome upconverter of standard DVDs and will continue to play HD-DVDs after the format war is decided (if ever).

You owe it to your HDTV to give it every HD signal that's available.;)

Life is short, so is money! :) I don't have a wife or kids so that isn't a problem. And I would rather use the the money to go out to eat with friends and family than on an electronics item that can be had for 1/20 to 1/4 the price and know it stands a better chance to be around at least as long if not longer. :)

The $200 price point is real good. And it is tempting. But until my $9CyberHome POS with component outputs (which looks great on my Hitachi 42" plasma) dies, I see no reason to shell out money on a player whose format may not survive. When it is clear one format or the other is headed to the dumpster, that is when I would buy.

I for a long time thought a universal player would solve this problem like it did for DVD + and - but the universal player currently costs more than buying both bluray and HD.

This could drag on for a while because its not only a hd-dvd,bluray war they are also competing against HD downloads and VOD. I'm curious to know how HD media sales stack up againts HD download sales

Today is the anniversary of Dan Wheldon's passing at Las Vegas in a dreadful crash that luckily didn't take more drivers' lives. I vaguely remember the crash, but I more strongly remember Paul Tracy trying to keep it together as he left the Medical Center knowing that Dan most likely wasn't going to.

The safety in these vehicles is beyond incomprehensible, especially relative to what it was 60 years ago, when dying wasn't unexpected. But it is still very dangerous. I always scoff at the prayer invocations, but never scoff at the risks these drivers take and the emergency workers out there who might need to pull short of a miracle to save a driver's life.

HBO Max has the live in car streaming without commercials, which provides an interesting take, but you are driving blind, knowing only what the team is telling the driver about what is happening on the track. The stages definitely ruin the NASCAR set up.

A big win for the Patriots, and they are now 3-2.

Browns lose a close one with... The Jets. That is a classic Browns loss (granted, any loss is a classic one it seems). 49'ers, Vikings, and Chiefs remain undefeated. The AFC north have a three way tie at 3-2 for second place.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

24 team playoff seems to be real close.

Are we really that far from a 64-team tournament?

The benefit of the 24 team playoff:
  • All the cartel teams that cartels want in playoff are in playoff
    • Independent of record too! Bonus.
  • MONEY!!!!! for the cartels.
  • I'm out of ideas.
Cons
  • Regular season really doesn't matter now other than the rivalry games
    • Top cartel teams can lose three games and still make the playoff
  • Going to start resting players?
    • The playoff is going to be *checks notes* several games!
    • Resting players could make games dumb.
    • Maybe even restrict NIL players from games played.
  • How much are streaming sub costs going up a month to pay for this?!

One of the pro's I see is in a year with so many undefeated teams they have a good chance of an opening. Few years back you had lower divisions that didnt get a shot. I love collage football and I have no problem with that addition.

We are in what week 5 now? Been two real good ranked games to watch.....Other than that top 25 teams are playing nothing.

Oh, I Hate the idea ...

It would be different if it was a game that you could play 2 or games each week, but when you only play 1 game a week, the larger playoff is Not a good thing ...

The season has how many games now, is it 14 ... then you want to play another 5 (with more to come) against Top 12 (eventually 24 teams) ... remember, the 5 games in the playoffs will be the hardest games all year and back to back.

For example, IF Ohio State should win it all this year ... they play 5 teams in the Top 25, plus they would play 5 more to win it all, depending on how the ranking shake out and if Bye weeks are given.

Thats 10 Ranked teams ... in one year ...
I don't see that happening very often ...
Edit, Bama plays 4, Georgia plays 3, But Ole Miss plays 5 (didn't expect to see that)

That said, I don't see the Buckeyes winning it all this year.

One of the pro's I see is in a year with so many undefeated teams they have a good chance of an opening. Few years back you had lower divisions that didnt get a shot. I love collage football and I have no problem with that addition.
A 12 team playoff net should catch any undefeated team. The 12 team playoff also exposed that rankings suck. I mean, we kind of knew already that the rankings weren't particularly reproducible, but we now have the empirical evidence that the rankings suck because judging who is the best among a mickey mouse scheduled football season isn't a rational endeavor. So the 12 team playoff ensures most teams that should make it, do, including the mid-major undefeated team. 8 teams should be able to work as well, but puts greater risk at OSU and Alabama missing the playoff... can't have that.

Which is the run up to my main problem with the 24 team set up is that it is designed to keep the OSU's and Alabama's from missing the playoff. The cartels are ensuring widespread participation for their own cartels to increase the monetary reward to themselves. It is fixing the system while not fixing the outcomes, merely making the regular season game outcomes virtually irrelevant. Sure, a bye for winning the conference would be nice, but we've already seen that byes aren't that influential.
We are in what week 5 now? Been two real good ranked games to watch.....Other than that top 25 teams are playing nothing.
That is college football in a nutshell. Again, college football isn't about competition, it is about revenue. The entire setup is about making money, from regular season squash games against local jobbers like the WWF days to tax exempt bowl games.

And to add to the first world woes, the college football cartels have made being a College Football fan even more expensive... so they can get paid more.

Wasn't exactly sure where to post this. Just had a customer come in inquiring about internet. He has HughesNet and had heard good things about mine. He asked if we provided email addresses and it kinda caught me off guard. I said he should be able to keep whatever email he had been using....my sister in law is still using a BellSouth email addy and they haven't been around here for many years. He said he had gotten a letter from HughesNet stating that they had until Nov 16th to save, move, forward, whatever, their Hughesnet emails because they would lose them after that date.

I have never heard of a company simply mass-deleting email accounts (the customer still has his HughesNet service). From what I understand, in the past, the company who was ditching their email service simply sold the customer base to a company like Google.

Anyone else getting this letter. He said he would show it to me tomorrow when I go out there and set up his internet.

Doing a Google of the HughesNet Email notice, it seems that HughesNet has been trying to eliminate hosting emails since 2019. And with HughesNet filing Chapter 11 back in August, it would be a smart move to switch to a more stable Email provider. Even AT&T farmed out their Email to Yahoo! years ago.

SpaceX's Starlink and the Cellular 5G Home Internet solutions have pretty much relegated HughesNet and its high latency, low bandwidth Internet service to History. If Earth had shorter days, maybe a Geostationary Internet Solution might have stood a fighting chance…

The Clippers still haven't officially announced their TV plans beyond 10 simulcasts on KTLA, but the NBA's FAQ for ClipperVision is now live. The CLIPPERS feed is currently showing a loop of their Hawaii preseason game.

The Heat still haven't announced their West Palm Beach or Fort Myers affiliates. Since WPLG is streaming the games for free via their app, I doubt we'll be seeing the return of WPLG on stream.

So far nothing testing for the Bucks, Magic, Hawks or Hornets.

For the naysayers who did not think this service would make it, just added another 4.9M subscribers and that was after the removal of 1.2M Russia subscribers.

This is even better, Paramount+ revenue grew 120% and Subscription revenue grew 74% year-over-year ( 2nd quarter 2021/ 2nd quarter 2022) to $830M, principally reflecting paid subscriber growth on Paramount+.

Now compare that to Peacock with only 13 million paid, 13 million free.

Just noticed, CBS shows on Paramount+ are now same day premieres vs next day, which is how they used to be.

Also in 4K/HDR/DV.

I wonder how providers feel about this, they pay an expensive per sub fee for CBS, who is giving another positive reason to drop Paid Live TV and subscribe to P+.

So, this means that those of us with Commercial Free subs, won't be Commercial Free, unless we wait till after the show is over ?
Which would make same day, not that big of a deal.

Paramount+ has always had the CBS shows on the CBS local channel and yes with commercials. What they are doing now is releasing the OnDemand versions of the show which I believe they don't release until after the shows air on the west coast. And they will be commercial free if you subscribe to the ad free version of Paramount+.

So, the New season won't be on the same day commercial free ???

Looks like the On Demand will Still be the Next Day ...

If you have the Top tier, you could get the LIVE Network feed same as any Cable or OTA would.

Watching it on the CBS local on Paramount+ is the exact same as watching it on your CBS local on your current cable/satellite/mvpd/vMVPD service. The OnDemand versions of it can be released on the same day that it airs but usually it is after the show airs on the west coast so if you have a show at 7:00 pm in your time zone and it airs 3 hours later on the west coast at 10:00 pm your time then they could release it at 11:00 pm your time if it was a one hour show. I really have not checked to see what time I can see the ad free OnDemand shows on Paramount+. I know today that last nights FBI and CIA show did not pop into the Up Next row on my Apple TV until this afternoon. I guess it may have been in Paramount+ since last night but I never checked it.
