As a subscriber to Dish and BHN, I am constantly weighing whether to get rid of BHN all together, alter my Dish package or continue on with both services as is.

With BHN I have-
2 HD DVRs
movie pak (Encore and Fox movies)
HBO, Cinemax, Showtime with on Demands

With Dish I have-
America's Top 100 + HD package ($20 extra) - No locals
HD DVR
HD non-DVR box
standard box
Starz channels including Starz HD, which BHN doesn't offer

There are reasons I have the pay channels with each the way I do. BHN gives me a good price on HBO and Cinemax, and they have on demands of each. They have HBO HD but no Cinemax HD. They also have more multichannel offerings than Dish. BHN has all the multichannels available for each, where as Dish only has a handful. I've thought of switching my Cinemax subscription to Dish but it would be silly to do it just for the HD. Sure would be nice if BHN would add Cinemax HD! As for Showtime, they offer again, all the multichannels, On Demand, and HD of Showtime east. So I keep my subscription with BHN.

Dish offers the better Starz, having more multichannels and the HD version.

At times I think about getting rid of BHN or lowering the package, changing it up or whatever, but what holds me back is that Dish is constantly going out when the rain comes down. Rain is something that happens a lot here in FL during the summertime. For this reason I can't give up BHN.

But on a day where Dish has added yet another HD channel (History), with more announced for later in September, it is very annoying to me that BHN won't even go as far as to announce anything in the works. Customer Service tells you they have heard of nothing. I am tired of this.

So will that law change for BHN now as well? can they pick and choose where they go? So bhn can just pull up its plant and move it to only the rich areas? How does that help the citizens of the state? Whom the law was designed to protect? Verizon wanted the law to "Compete and have fair competition" But the law is clearly one sided as cable has 1 set of rules and verizon another. And verizons rule does not include the extra costs BHN has to ensue by maintaining plant in areas that do not make money.

BHN must apply for an agreement with the state. The local agreements remain in place until they expire, at which point the BHN will deal with the state. In other words, if BHN has an agreement with Orlando that expires in 2010 and one that expires with Tampa in 2011, they will be dealing with the state for Orlando in 2010 and Tampa in 2011.

So the same set of rules will apply to BHN as all the other companies. I suppose BHN could pull out of the ghetto, but why would they? They already have the cable laid. If they aren't making any money off the ghetto than maybe they would pull out.

You may not like the idea of companies being able to pick and choose where they want to service customers and you may feel the government should "protect" the consumer, but you should really try to understand how a free market works. Capitalism is about making money, not protecting the poor. I have a feeling there would be a backlash and bad PR if BHN started pulling out of any neighborhood, so I doubt they would do that. It would be all over the front page of the SP Times and and other papers. I think the looser laws will mainly impact companies like Verizon going in, who will just skip over the poorer neighborhoods.

If you want equality for all, got to Venezuela. Their dictator now runs all the power and phone companies. The "people" own it and the government runs it. I don't know about you but I prefer the free market.

Yes I understand how capitalism works, but in this case these companies use PUBLIC land to run their business. So they must do so in the benefit of the public. Just like how radio stations have certain requirements becuase they use public air waves. Cable companies and verizon are using public property My property and yours, to make money off of. So they should be required to benefit all those who pay taxes not just the rich.

and I didnt know that about the agreement, it seems a bit more fair for the companies if it applies to everyone.

Its funny verizon would use the easement to run their fiber right through a poor neighborhood bypassing it for service but then hook up the rich next door neighbor.... That bill gives them that ability. It had a good part in that it allowed them not to deal with local governments seems to benefit everyone even the cbale companies, but at the same time it takes away protections consumers had.

Bad argument because if you get technical with things, EVERY business uses public infrastructure in some way. The number one example is roads. Everyone uses roads, whether directly or to have product shipped to them. I think it is only fair that cable and utility companies pay for use of the right of way public land, but that is where it should end. Anyway, services like cable benefit everybody whether they use them or not. The guy sitting home on unemployment interacts with a rep at the unemployment office who uses some type of data line (cable, DSL, t1, dial-up, or whatever) to connect to the state. So indirectly, everybody benefits from cable TV lines the same way they do from power or water utilities.

By rich I mean not poor. Fios is avoiding areas in which "Lower income" people live because the return is not as great. Its a fact google it.

The cable people do have it. Its the sat guys. And I have no problem with the agreement as long as its equal for all parties involved. My only problem is the cable companies had to go through hell to start their business, and now the phone companies get a free ride. It is government regulation favoring one company over another and its not "free market". If verizon wants to offer tv service they should be allowed to offer it anywhere the same as cable, but they should not get special treatment.

Yes everyone is can use roads. Can you as a pirvate citizen use the government easement? That logic is flawed, becuase normal people cant just dig a cable through the public easement. but a normal person can use the roads. the laws that were put in place decades ago were to ensure that these companies had the rights to use public land, and easement, but at the same time they had to give benefit to the community as a whole. Including public access stations and the likes. Is verizon required to have public access stations? Are they required to carry all the counties/cities governments channels? Heck BHN in the city of ocoee carries 5 channels, free that are mandated by the county/city (thats 10HD channels right their more if they are lower speed) or over 35 regular digital channels....

So what! They do demographics on the area and make a determination as to whey they will see not only a return on their investment, but a profit. Why should they go into a ghetto where people won't be ordering $100 a month per household or more of service?

My cable and sat bill are about $200. Add in Vonage for my biz phone lines ($60) and Virtual Office Internet ($90).... So I am paying $350 for phone, Internet and television... at least, I probably forgot something... How many homes in the ghetto have service like this? 1 me or 4-10 ghetto homes? It only makes business sense to go after the people that will pay the most for the service.

Come on Steveni! Start your own independent company and offer a service. I'll bet my bottom dollar you go where the money is too. If you don't, you'll be out of business real quick.

The hard work BHN has done in the past is in fact gone, while the Verizons of the world can roll right in with service. However, BHN can now expand far easier and they can break their local franchises and start a state franchise (as I pointed out).

The history of cable and phone companies has not always been fair to either side. Going forward, this law makes it far more fair than it has ever been. Now free market will say who gets to go where. This is good for consumers.

I said "I think it is only fair that cable and utility companies pay for use of the right of way public land, but that is where it should end"

You mention they have to give back to the community as a whole? Why is that a good law? Paying for usage should be enough. Giving back public access is typical government intervening. I would rather see 10 more HD channels than 5 city channels (as per your argument), I don't know about the rest of you.

Which side are you on steveni? Are you saying that they shouldn't have to offer these city and county channels like I am? Or are you saying that since they have to offer them, Verizon should too? Neither should! It is not a job of the cable and phone companies to get the word out of government. Last I checked I can pick up my city government channels with an antenna (not that I care to watch).

Here in Pinellas and neighboring Hillsborough, the governments are whining as we speak since BHN is moving all the government channels to the higher digital tier. One councilman went as far as to say that the (crummy) city channel would no longer get those 'flipping through channels" moving from channel 17 or whatever to the 300's. It is that bad that they have to rely on flippers to catch the action of the city at work?

Their numbers show 1/3rd of the city "watches" the city government channel according to my local paper. I am sure 1/3rd of people have seen it or know about it, but I highly doubt 1/3rd of the city sits and watches it. Most of the meetings aren't live anyway. A truly involved citizen usually goes to the meetings. This is just silly.

We do way too much in this country to make things comfortable to the poor and unfortunate. Whoever said the poor deserve comfort?? You give them a welfare check, county health care, paid electric bills and water bills, free lunch for the kids at school. What is their incentive to rise above? Many of them have it better than their hard working counterparts that are above the magical poverty line. We should cut off all assistance except for the truly disabled. You crap out three kids before you're 20 and that is your problem!

If somebody wants to see the government channels, it is now on digital. Can't afford it? Get a job and work your way up until you can afford digital cable.

Look at all the immigrants that come here from NOTHING. They have nothing and they come here and succeed with small businesses and work their way up from the bottom. Too many people in this country expect too much.

BHN, I agree with you for once.. moving those channels out of the teens and into the 300s! When they call in bitching about it, tell them to get a job or skip the cigarettes and boos and buy rabbit ears!

Its good for consumers on only one ground. that they have tougher competition in their areas. The downside is still that the competition gets to pick and choose where it wants to go, its not required like before to provide access for everyone.. Which can have a negative impact on the consumers. Because if you live in X city you get X price if you live in Y city you get Y price.. The people in the cities with compeition will get discounted rates, and those in cities without will cover the costs of the others discounted rates..

I say again im all for Compeition infact, Im hopeing it happens soon in orlando why? Because not only is their compeition for who your tv company is, their is compeition amoung the companies to get the best employees, which will force companies to pay more to keep qualified employees. So dont ge tme wrong im all for compeition because it will surely benefit me on a personal level, My only problem with the law is it does not protect consumers enough.

I would rather see those 10 HD channels to. and the cable/telco companies dont "pay" for access to the public land. We the consumers do. Thats what all those taxes go to cover. and in Areas where the plant is on poles, The money goes to the local power/telco company. Whomever manages the poles. (att used to manage the entire countries poles but now local companies do) in Orlando Progress Energy handles the majority and we pay a fee per "connect" to each pole.

I am saying if BHN is required to carry them so should verizon. I do not beleive either should be required but if one is so should the other.

Update on my new Apple iphone 18PM:
Battery now lasts for 4 days or 96 hours and the most drain is having the Tesla app running in the background and polling emails and Texts. My old 15PM was barely lasting 24 hours.

If you ponied up for an iPhone Duo, keep it away from anything other than your soft, fleshy fingertips. No fingernails, no dust, sand, dirt, or other particulate matter. And don't bend it more than it needs to. Zack has destroyed $2,000 of Apple hardware to get those views, which should cover his expenses.

Comcast is the first to report, with a massive 274,000 loss in video subscribers.

In the 3Q of 2016, Comcast had 21.42 million video subscribers and was the #1 provider, now at 10.39 million and is the #3 Provider, YTTV is #2 ( who also surpassed DirecTV-8 Million and Dish-under 5 Million), Charter/Spectrum is #1.

yes. even copper lines in a house degrade over 70 years, I doubt coax would last that long. Fiber Optic on the isp side will last over 70 years with very dedgration

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Well, the bag can't weigh that much, right? But by law food product packaging must display the actual net weight of the product, i.e., the contents of the container, so by any logic, if not law, a store's stated per-ounce cost should reflect that figure. But since there's not any law regulating shelf statements, a store can say whatever it wants without violating any rules. So I guess the answer is more consumer legislation. Or simply caveat emptor.

I would think that the Vendor/Maker of the product would have a say in it, showing the Correct weight ...
You would think it would be in the contract.

I do look at the ounces of items, but unless its way off, I don't check the math, may have to start now.

Remember when you use to get a 13.5 oz bag of Chips .... Thats a PARTY Size now.

Unless the specific product or its packaging is known at the time of weighing, estimating the tare weight for a PoS system is a tall order.

I'm pretty sure that produce bags can't get any thinner. ;)

You certainly don't want to put unbagged produce on a belt, scale, or in a clerk's hands (gloved or not).
I would think that all the packaging would already be accounted for ... they weigh the container, subtract that from the scale, then add the product , so its weighing the Product only

You would be thinking wrong when it comes to goods that are sold by weight (meat, produce, nails). Those items typically go on the scale wrapped without an associated tare. The weight only excludes the sticker because it hasn't been printed yet.

Perhaps only for sliced meat and cheese. Salads and similarly "shifty" or "drippy" items are typically weighed in deli cartons of some sort.

My monster burritos (up to two lbs.) are weighed in their foil jackets or paper mache take-out trays, and the jacket/tray is then "sealed" with the printed label as it comes off the printer.

Precision has to give way to practicality in situations like that.

2/3 of a cup, a large scoop.
Jimbo
They are probably cheating you by swapping store brand product for name brand...those store deli's are very sketchy
They are made every day at this place ... it's a little Ma and Pop store ...

When ever I order something, they weigh the container (like everyone is suppose to) then weigh the product, so you actually get what your paying for lb wise ...

I apologize...I was thought you were talking about a supermarket deli

I did look into that ... the ones I get have about 65mg, which is very little ... but then I wouldn't expect much to be in Ice Cream.
Carbs are more than I would have liked ...

I've always been super interested in things space related so this is a pretty cool event coming up. Nov 18, 2026 early in the morning, Voyager 1 will reach the distance of one full light day from Earth. Took almost 50 yrs. I was 13 when it launched.

I know HipKat said that they were working on conversions but we got the official news yesterday right from Dish that starting next month all DMA's will be on the western arc, and all customers will be assigned to that. That's gonna mean a lot of customers around here aren't gonna get Dish unless there are exceptions. Too many mountains and trees.

Years down the road
Looks like Charlie Ergen will never give up satellite TV. The reason Echostar 25 the most poweful DBS satellite ever built at 110 location already. Also Echostar 26 another super satellite on order for 119 orbital location will be ready in 15 months. he will have 110/119 for another 20 years. Dish will be the only satellte company left. The reason for rural areas and some people like satellite easy to operate and change channels in seconds.

I hope these new "most powerful" satellites will mean that DISH can provide every channel that can be sourced in HD in HD. I do not like the fact that two of my favorite channels (Start and H&I) are SD. I was also very disappointed after installation that METV has to be streamed from my internet connection. Finally, I dropped the locals upon seeing that my local CW channel is in blurry letterboxed SD when it has been HD OTA for years.

This piece gets me - the fact that Dish has removed SD channels from satellite completely in the name of "HD upgrades". I pay for satellite TV, not streaming...I don't see why they couldn't leave the SD version of the channels on Satellite then put the HD streaming version like they have for other channels.

At this point one can only ask whether any live ch's are still distributed in SD. Other than maybe "classics" ch's that run only older stuff

Even if you are broadcasting old SD-only shows, I would think advertisers would still want their commercials to look good.

Personally, I would HATE to see a SD Channel at this point.

Advertisers on SD channels are probably Far and Few, very hard to find, they have very few viewers to watch them.

I watch mostly SD channels (H&I, Start and ION, etc.). There are plenty of advertisers, this time of the year it is mostly Medicare Advantage plans, auto extended warranties and the occasional walk-in-tub. They know who is watching.

Now that I'm retired, obviously I have different health care insurance. I take 2 prescriptions. With my old insurance I didn't have to pay for either of them, now I do. It's not a huge amount but it led me to dig a little into the cost of prescription medications. I have been using Walgreens for the longest time. But what I found was that Walgreens price is 4.8 times more for one of my prescriptions and the other is 2.3 percent more compared to the lowest price pharmacy. If you pay for prescription medications you might want to have a look at trumprx and see if you can get a lower price.

I run them through several different providers to see who has the lowest cost

Usually it's Walmart or Sam's + GoodRx

Also...

You can also price them through the CareCard and WellRx apps.

Sometimes Amazon Pharmacy is cheapest.

I'm fortunate and don't take any medications. A couple years ago I had to take some antibiotics and used the GoodRx app. Went to Walmart and the person behind the desk knew me and told me to just buy them outright....the GoodRx price was a LOT higher. She said they aren't supposed to tell customers when they see they are being screwed.

Actually I take just 2 prescriptions, Atorvastatin and Lisinopril. They cost me $6 each for 100 pills. Next year that will be nothing.

Walmart and Sam's pharmacies have "zero rated" prescriptions lists where generics are $4 (or less). If yours are on that list, then of course GoodRx isn't going to help. Also, GoodRx isn't always the cheapest discount program. For me, the cheapest is usually Mark Cuban's Cost Plus Drugs.

My wife and I both take Gabapentin for nerve pain. With our Medicare Plan D plan it use to be free. Now we have to pay for it. Yesterday my wife got her prescription at CVS and the pharmacist dug around and got the cost cut in half with what he said was RX. I am guessing this was GoodRX.

Here in NY State, if you're 65 or older you're eligible for the state's EPIC (Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage) Part D supplement that limits your maximum co-pay to $20. The co-pays range from $3 to $20 depending on the tier. The Part D included with my Advantage plan has many tier 1 drugs at no co-pay.
