Hi all,

We just published this today ... thought you might be interested:
Which is More Consumer Friendly: HD DVD or Blu-ray?

From the excerpt:
This article is not written in an attempt to convince anyone who has already made an investment one way or the other, for that is an almost impossible feat. It was written for those that are still "on the fence", as they say. It is for those who are either undecided, or are waiting to see which one will come out ahead (or which will be first to waive the white flag).

Enjoy,

The article is quite obviously an attempt to push HD-DVD. There is no way it could be considered nutral.

1. If Toshiba was not giving away the players other manufacturers might consider making the players. With HD-DVD you will only have the choice of Toshiba for quite a while.

2. All the copy protection on BD... Well it is up to the studios to pick exactly how much copy protection they want. They can just put out completely unprotected discs if they wanted to do so.

3. Higher bit rate. Well you can debate back and forth for the consumer if lossless audio makes a difference. But for the studios it means fewer skews as they can put more language tracks on a disc.

4. Interactivity from the start... Well as being one of the owners of the A1 I can tell you that yes the features seem to work, but the A1 player has a hard time with a lot of them. The processing power seems overloaded. I just got the Star Trek HD-DVD collection. It has a ton of interactive features. I have been using them with the A1. It is very slow and causes dropped frames and studdering in the output. Well there are probably only a few of us A1 people...

5. Better price... Well the players are cheaper with HD-DVD, but I have been buying a lot of BDs at 1/2 price. My A1 cost more than my PS3. But, even now if you buy and get the sales, you can probably still make up the difference in price. The 20 BDs I bought on sale is already $200.

6. The number of titles released is about the same. Yes, but HD-DVD started earlier. If you consider BD 1 year, HD-DVD 18 Months 1/3 more time to release titles for HD-DVD. HD-DVD should have 33% more titles. Plus who has titles people want to buy? BD has been selling about 2x the number of titles HD-DVD has been selling all year.

Not to say that all things are rosey on the BD side, I just wanted to point out that the article glosses over many things. I as mentioned own both formats, and I will probably get an universal player when they are resonably priced. Face it both sides are still early adopter stages that need work.

Where in my article did I claim it was neutral?

... and Onkyo and Venturer. Also don't forget that LG and Samsung are both now supporting HD DVD, if you want a combo player. But a good point if you're brand-loyal to one of the manufacturers in the Blu-ray camp, or have something against Toshiba products.

HD DVD studios can, but AACS is a mandatory scheme for Blu-ray.

If this was an article on which was best for the studios, I would have included that :)

Thanks for the reply,

You are right, I reread the first 2 paragraphs. I was thinking it was a neutral article since it listed the similarities first.

I though Onkyo pulled out of making a rebadged toshiba. Venturer probably can compete with Toshiba on the low end if they are going the made in China route. The only reason I see LG and Samsung in the HDDVD market is because they can mark up the boxes to make a profit by doing BD.

Like I said my Toshiba box works, but leaves a lot to be desired in speed (maybe the new ones have more processing power), in the remote design, in speed of loading, etc. Essentially HD-DVD is being relegated to Toshiba or cheap Chinese players. Maybe that is what the market wants. It would be nice to have some real choices though.

I guess the point is that HDTV magazine has decided to support a format that has only one mainstream brand Toshiba and cheap no name chinese players. This is the biggest weakness of HD-DVD. Studio support is a numbers game, but hardware possiblities is a different one.

What company is going to compete with Toshiba when there is 0 margin? One can argue back and forth about the pluses and minuses of various BD players, including if they have features that the Toshiba has. But, at least you have choices to argue about.

If HD-DVD wins the war is Toshiba going to raise prices? Toshiba is turning into HD-DVD's biggest problem.

Please note that this is not an HDTV Magazine opinion, but my personal recommendation. Just a week or so ago, Dale published an article in which he preferred Blu-ray.

Speaking purely hypothetically ... If HD DVD "wins", you immediately have two more main-stream manufacturers that could churn out an HD DVD player in short order: LG and Samsung.

I wouldn't be too surprised if one of them had a dedicated HD DVD player at CES (complete conjecture on my part, but it would not be surprising to me).

How do you know there is zero margin? Isn't it just as likely that BD players currently represent a 1000% profit margin, which is why several manufactures are jumping on the bandwagon to grab those superhigh profits while the gettin's good?

It's like comparing a Monster Cable to one bought at Monoprice.com. Just because the Monster costs 10 to 20 times more does not prove it's one bit better, nor does it prove that Monoprice operates at a zero margin.

Wasn't exactly sure where to post this. Just had a customer come in inquiring about internet. He has HughesNet and had heard good things about mine. He asked if we provided email addresses and it kinda caught me off guard. I said he should be able to keep whatever email he had been using....my sister in law is still using a BellSouth email addy and they haven't been around here for many years. He said he had gotten a letter from HughesNet stating that they had until Nov 16th to save, move, forward, whatever, their Hughesnet emails because they would lose them after that date.

I have never heard of a company simply mass-deleting email accounts (the customer still has his HughesNet service). From what I understand, in the past, the company who was ditching their email service simply sold the customer base to a company like Google.

Anyone else getting this letter. He said he would show it to me tomorrow when I go out there and set up his internet.

Doing a Google of the HughesNet Email notice, it seems that HughesNet has been trying to eliminate hosting emails since 2019. And with HughesNet filing Chapter 11 back in August, it would be a smart move to switch to a more stable Email provider. Even AT&T farmed out their Email to Yahoo! years ago.

SpaceX's Starlink and the Cellular 5G Home Internet solutions have pretty much relegated HughesNet and its high latency, low bandwidth Internet service to History. If Earth had shorter days, maybe a Geostationary Internet Solution might have stood a fighting chance…

AOL killed mine years ago without any notice. I actually lost contact with some old friends as that was the only address I ever used to communicate with them.

For the naysayers who did not think this service would make it, just added another 4.9M subscribers and that was after the removal of 1.2M Russia subscribers.

This is even better, Paramount+ revenue grew 120% and Subscription revenue grew 74% year-over-year ( 2nd quarter 2021/ 2nd quarter 2022) to $830M, principally reflecting paid subscriber growth on Paramount+.

Now compare that to Peacock with only 13 million paid, 13 million free.

Just noticed, CBS shows on Paramount+ are now same day premieres vs next day, which is how they used to be.

Also in 4K/HDR/DV.

I wonder how providers feel about this, they pay an expensive per sub fee for CBS, who is giving another positive reason to drop Paid Live TV and subscribe to P+.

So, this means that those of us with Commercial Free subs, won't be Commercial Free, unless we wait till after the show is over ?
Which would make same day, not that big of a deal.

Paramount+ has always had the CBS shows on the CBS local channel and yes with commercials. What they are doing now is releasing the OnDemand versions of the show which I believe they don't release until after the shows air on the west coast. And they will be commercial free if you subscribe to the ad free version of Paramount+.

So, the New season won't be on the same day commercial free ???

Looks like the On Demand will Still be the Next Day ...

If you have the Top tier, you could get the LIVE Network feed same as any Cable or OTA would.

Watching it on the CBS local on Paramount+ is the exact same as watching it on your CBS local on your current cable/satellite/mvpd/vMVPD service. The OnDemand versions of it can be released on the same day that it airs but usually it is after the show airs on the west coast so if you have a show at 7:00 pm in your time zone and it airs 3 hours later on the west coast at 10:00 pm your time then they could release it at 11:00 pm your time if it was a one hour show. I really have not checked to see what time I can see the ad free OnDemand shows on Paramount+. I know today that last nights FBI and CIA show did not pop into the Up Next row on my Apple TV until this afternoon. I guess it may have been in Paramount+ since last night but I never checked it.

Apple has finally released their Apple TV 4K with built-in Siri and a microphone so it can respond to your queries even if you don't have the remote. It also increases in price, to $299. I had been planning on updating my current Apple TV 4K streamers, but that's $600 for the two of them, and that's a pass at this point.

At $299, it had better come with 256 GB of Storage, Gigabit (or better) Ethernet, the latest HDMI tech and standards, and one year of free Apple One. But it probably won't…

Not a bit. IMO, Apple's are slow to boot up. Time is about the same with 1st gen and 3rd. Roku runs rings around them in that department. I only reason I stuck, is the Apple infrastructure, which has it's definite advantages. But $300 is a deal breaker. Later, Apple!

No. Makes me wonder if that is Apple or the carrier. I am on pre-paid, so I never get "an upgrade." I still have my old iPhone 11 Pro as a second line, and it runs iOS 27 just fine. My iPhone Air, which is still a current model, doesn't really seem that much faster in regular use. It is better in other ways, and worse in some ways than the 11 Pro (size), but performance really isn't a big differentiator, especially since I replaced the battery in the 11 Pro. If I had gotten enough storage when I originally bought the 11 Pro, it could still be my primary device with no issues.

Yeah, they boot up a bit slower than Roku, but the OS does a lot more, so it makes sense. How often are you booting them up that is a differentiator? Aside from OS updates, mine are on all the time. I will say the ATV4K is generally quicker than the Roku Ultras I have, when it comes to launching apps and responsiveness, not that the Roku is sluggish.

For niche use cases, yes I agree. Kali for ethical hacking and security testing, and running a Cacti server for network monitoring are the two things I have experience in. Plus thousands and thousands of other things, but for every day use I just can't see it. The owner of the GMRS repeater that I pay to access is changing the Tx DPL tones tomorrow, while Chirp is available on Linux, the software to program my MXT500 is not.

I run Fedora and Ubuntu in VMWare, honestly I don't care much for the UI of either of them and I don't feel like spending days/weeks to customize the UI to make it look Windows-like when I could just use Windows. The cartoonish dock at the bottom of the screen reminds me of Apple products.

What is so fantabulous about the Windows UI? By many accounts, it has been going downhill since Windows 7.

There are Linux desktops that offer Windows or Mac UIs, yet you don't hear much chatter about them outside of questions about when the creators might get sued.

Because it's what I prefer. I know I've said this a few times, I use Open Shell to give me the cascading start menu a la WIN 95 and NT4.0. The only reason I went from Windows Vista to 7 back in the day was because of Classic Shell. I cannot stand anything other than the OG start menu from 30+ years ago. I'm using ExplorerPatcher to give me Windows 10 UI elements of the taskbar and right click context menus.

If you could take a look at how I set up Windows 95, you'd find many similarities to how I use 11.

I could probably use that as a starting point, but I don't like the full size icons. If you have to click on each folder that's also a no-go for me, it has to be cascading.

I used to have Peppermint Linux in a VM, that was about as close as I could get to recreating a Windows NT4.0 style of menu structure, but I could never get it to scale properly in VMWare on a 4K display and eventually gave up.

Whatever the boot up time it's fine with me. The longest part of my bootup is the HP SureStart BIOS integrity check. Once that is done, it's only a few more seconds. I haven't done this reg tweak yet since the reformat, but I switched the bootup animation to the Windows 10 style spinning circle of dots, and it's two and a half rotations. I can live with that.

I hope you don't believe that makes it wonderful (especially when you're using workarounds for Microsoft's malfeasance).

I use LibreOffice as opposed to Microsoft office (even in Windows) because it's UI is like the Office of old, so I'm putting my money where my mouth is (in a manner of speaking). The ribbon was one of the worst ideas to come out Redmond.

Not for me, mines has no mention of how long aka the offer period and the Terms and conditions the $0.00 is good for. All I see is one can lose $5.00 if you decide to remove it before day 31 after you add it to the account.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....
