Hello,

I recently acquired a Primestar dish from the neighbor and I'm in the process of trying to aim it at G10R. It's a Mold# 1X0.7-1, and appears to be in good condition. I've been working with it for the past 3 days now and haven't found G10 yet. I'm planning on a trip to the local hardware store tomorrow and I'm going to pick up an inclimeter while I'm there.

My question is, what is the offset angle of a Primestar dish? According to the corrodinates I received from GeoSatFinder the elevation setting for my location should be 33.2 degrees. I would need to minus the offset angle of the dish from the elevation setting of 33.2 degrees to get the correct inclimeter angle value, is this correct?

Thanks

Doug

When I pointed my Primestar at G10 last August, I hit it the first time just setting the angle gauge on the mount. I turned on the receiver I had out there and G10 was on already. That elevation adjustment bolt is the best. I just needed to tweak it the slightest bit to get the max quality and tighten the bolts.

Hello,

First of all thanks for all your replies, they've been very helpful. And yes we are know as the hometown of Radar O'reilly, however he's actually from Bristol Conneticut. I often wondered where they came up with Ottumwa and I came across this article: The Ottumwa Courier - 'Radar' has come home , that kind of shed some light on it.

I decided to read over Linuxman's post on how to set up a 1 meter Primestar for G10R: http://www.satelliteguys.us/free-air-fta-discussion/100714-how-1-meter-primestar-g10-ku-123w.html once more and I believe I have found out where I goofed up :eureka . When I checked the photo of Linuxman's mount I noticed this time that he had a line marking where the mounts elevation was currently set and 2 lines above showing where the installer should should sweep to find the correct elevation. I noticed this time that the line below was directly accross the metal piece on the inside of the mount and was essentially the pointer for the elevation guide. I've been drawing an imaginary line across the bolt and using that as my pointer. So I've been sweeping between 20 and 30 degrees rather than 30 to 40. Silly mistake  . I guess I wasn't paying close enough attention the first time I checked the photo.

Well, hopefully I can get her aimed right now. When the weather permitts anyway.

Thanks

Doug

When I first started out with this hobby I had a Primestar dish and tried to get that bird and was unsuccessful after many, many tries. I ended up getting a slightly larger dish (DirecWay with skew) and I nailed it but only after I figured out that when you are aiming the dish you need to make sure that you are aiming with a strong transponder programmed into the receiver. By the way after I purchased a motor for my Primestar it did pick up that bird, guess I wasn't too patient to begin with. Hope that helps.

Got some pics here...

Wow, Netbuilder, I am impressed with your blog, and the pics. The mounting strap that you have attached to the lnb arm on the direcway dish is cool.
How did you figure out where to place the lnb's on the strap, and where did you point the dish? I currently have a 36" fortec dish with a Stab HH100 motor I'm using with my Captiveworks cw600s reciever, but I have yet to get G10R. I also have a P* dish, a direcway dish ( like yours, but no lnb arm), and a Starband internet sat dish kinda like the direcway, but it has the lnb and the arm. I intend to get a dish pointed at G10R, but I still need to locate a discrete mounting area so as to keep the wife happy. You have given me new inspiration with your blog and the pics.....thanks

SATisfied - and everyone

I got the "mounting strap" sheet metal strip from Lowe's and I bent it to match the curvature of the dish. From there I just slowly slid each LNBF until I tuned in the bird I was looking for and got some signal. The birds pushing circular polarity are pretty strong and the signals are pretty forgiving for free-hand tuning even though they are sensitive.

What is funny is how I found 148W. I was totally not expecting to get that one. I was just trying to tune in anything along the belt and to my surprise I saw it was 148W. I think the larger dish contributes to this result. G10R is hard to hit for sure which is why it is my center focus LNBF but I wouldn't try to find it without a dish of AT LEAST this size.

If you attempt this with similar equipment I could help you out by providing measurements or closer pictures.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Season 2 order already in hand:

'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' Renewed for Season 2, Tatiana Maslany to Guest Star in Season 1

I've not been optimistic about this show based on what I've read so far. Seems to be aimed at a younger audience. Interesting though that Tatiana Maslany will have some sort of role.

Here i am over a year later and just finished season 1. Not great but not as bad as I was expecting. Did not care for the barefoot captain stuff but overall ok. Actually looking forward to see what they did for season 2.

Yeah, the foot stuff was just nasty. I kept thinking of how dirty her feet would get traipsing around shoe-less. Funny, I love being shoe less at home and never wear shoes indoors in my home for long, but seeing her laying on all her furniture with her bare feet hanging out just kind of grossed me out.

There would still be dirt ,dust in the future I am sure. So walking around the station like she did she would get stuff on her feet. I am sure the robot vacuum is still going to miss stuff, with all those different alien species running around there.

Where is it going to come from -- specifically?

Why do you think cleaning technology won't improve in the next few hundred years? HEPA filtration was invented as part of the Manhattan Project.

I don't know, but I still don't like her walking through the station or the academy with out her shoes. It looks unprofessional and very "hippy like" for someone of her status and I personally don't get off to feet, so there is that. ;)

Stay out of my office. I rarely have shoes or socks on in the office. My office and business is at home though :clapping

I just thought her behavior, including the bare feet thing, was disrespectful to her position.

The future of Stargate is in question today, as SCI FI Channel has cancelled the long-running Stargate SG-1, Multichannel News reported today and a GateWorld source has confirmed. The news regrettably follows the airing of the show's milestone two-hundredth episode on Friday.

Stargate Atlantis, meanwhile, has been renewed for a fourth season, with the network hoping to see that the spin-off series can stand alone, according to a source.

They didn't sell many, they were pricey and not out long. Quickly got replaced by the Hopper.
T
They were high-end specialty, somewhat buggy and the 612/622/722 just overwhelmed it in popularity.
HipKat
I think they were more of a transitional receiver bridging the VIPs to the Hopper. They were a PITA to install and were buggy. Personally, I thought at the time that they were the best receiver out there. The versatility of the VIP's with the new Hopper GUI and, by far, the coolest-looking front plate and lighting.

Well if it is because of reliability that wouldnt shock me.I went through 5 or 6 of them in little over 2 years. I loved the Sling when it worked! Saved lots of money having it in the day. That was probably 15 or 16 years ago?

I don't recall that they came out just before hopper, but rather that they came out even before 722. Or could be thinking of 921.

As to the title pf the post, "rare" does not necessarily mean valuable or desirable.
