Some of you know from previous posts that my daughter serving our nation as a member of the Peace Corps, stationed in Kenya. You may also be aware, if you have paid any attention to the news in the past few days, that elections in Kenya, and the transfer of power, do not proceed as smoothly in Kenya as they do in the U.S. The events of the past few days have been anticipated for as long as my daughter has been in Kenya, about 18 months now. Some of you have communicated to me at various times that you think about my daughter, and so for those of you who may be concerned, here's an update.

As I said, this was not unexpected. Partly because of the Christmas holiday, and partly so that they would not be alone if things did get...well, the way they are, my daughter and two of her friends spent Christmas together. The election took place on the 27th. Monday morning, after seeing news reports and reading others online, I phoned my daughter to see how things were going. She stated that the violence was not at that point to close to them, but that the Peace Corps was trying to make arrangements for them to be picked up and brought to Nairobi. There was no petrol available in the community they were in, and the roads were blocked in place with checkpoints. Monday night/Tuesday morning the gunfire got to within a kilometer of them. They were able to hire a car to take them to where the Peace Corps vehicle would pick them up. Two men from the community went with them, to get them through the checkpoints. Much of the trouble is based on tribal affiliation. My daughter is a blue-eyed blond, but one of her friends immigrated to the U.S. from India (the Kenyans are familiar with people from India, and this was not a problem), and the other is African-American, and has the skin coloring associated in Kenya with the opposition tribe. At the checkpoint the men from the community
explained that all three women were from America, and they were able to get through.

When we spoke with her on Tuesday, about 11:00 AM our time, so 8:00 PM there, they were in a house in a gated community, with a four foot wall and a ten foot barb wire fence on top of that, with security, and more security at the gate to the house, with a third gate to the entrance to the upstairs of the house with the bedrooms. Wednesday they were expecting to be transferred to a home the Peace Corps owns, where a staff person had been living until just a few days ago. He went back to the states. Some of the Peace Corps Workers are already there. Normally when they come to Nairobi they stay near the City Centre, but that area is expected to be the focus of violence on Wednesday/Thursday. They are also being housed where they are, so that if the decision is made to evacuate them they will be closer to the airport.

Kenya has made some great advances in the past few years. My daughter has said she wouldn't mind staying in Kenya after her term is up (at least before these events), because the cities offer anything you can find in any large city in the world. But the country also has a huge disparity in wealth between the cities and the rural areas, and even the cities are home to huge slums. Kenya has a tremendous problem with corruption.

News accounts state that thousands of tourists are stranded in Kenya, some I am sure who were there for the Safari trips, and many more on the coast, especially in the Mombasa area (where my daughter and her friends had hoped to meet other PCW's to celebrate the New Year as they did last year. While there had been hope that there would not be the kind of upheaval they are now experiencing, as I said previously, it was not really unexpected. Probably the severity was not anticipated. My daughter had told us when she first got there that if we were able to come while she was there, we did not want to come at this time.

We are able to keep in contact with our daughter. She has a cell phone. However, if she needs to contact us she makes a quick call just to tell us to call her back. The phone service is a pay as you go system, and they are not allowing users to buy more minutes so that people cannot communicate. So she is conserving the minutes she has. She is not charged for incoming calls. Live broadcasts were banned soon after the elections, and most of the information she has of what is going on comes from friends and family outside of Kenya who are calling or texting her.

BTW, Happy New Year. :D:o

After a few days of being able to move around the neighborhood they are in, on Tuesday tjeu are supposed to stay put again, there are more protests planned. On Thursday, the plans are to move all the Peace Corps Volunteers who are from provinces where it is not yet safe to return to Kyeri, which is at the foot of Mt. Kenya. Looks like a beautiful area, and is the destination for many taking safari tours. Lots of wildlife in the area. They are to be there until at least the 16th, when some decisions are supposed to be made about future plans. The president has invited the opposition leader to meet with him, so hopefully some resolution can be reached. A big question is after the events of the past week how soon it will be before some areas reach any semblance of normal. There are some areas where Peace Corps personnel have been able to stay on site. The western provinces, which is where my daughter is stationed, are the areas most affected.
Bogy
Quick update. They were moved to Nyeri. The above was either a mispelling or misunderstanding by me. Nice, but its a little on the cool side, only gets into the 70's because of the elevation, so its felt to cool to use the hotel pool.

More importantly, the regional director is supposed to come and talk with them on Tuesday. He was in Tanzania Sunday to talk with those evacuated there. After some hopeful signs, no progress seems to be taking place. They are not figuring many of the sites will be viable for a minimum of 2 to 3 months. Quite possibly nowhere near that soon. My daughter only has six months left to go. Options include; being reassigned to a new site; being sent home until its ok to return; going to a site to help somebody already there; doing humanitarian work (not sure just what this would consist of, could be working with CDC, UN, etc.), being reassigned to another country, or just coming home. With only six months left to go, many of these really aren't feasible. Also, there are between 60 to 65 people this affects, and there are probably not going to be that many places available. The worst for her is that she will have no opportunity to go back to her home. The least of this is retrieving things she would like to keep. One good thing is that she was just home at Thanksgiving, and brought many souvenirs home then. She would give the Peace Corps list of what she wanted, and when it was considered safe they would try to retrieve the items. Hard telling when that would be. She has a friend in the community who she will ask to mail her what she wants, primarily pictures and journals, and to distribute the rest between herself and other friends. My daughter's site is complicated by its proximity to Uganda, just a kilometer away. Earlier last week I read a report that Uganda was strengthening its military along the border, ostensibly to keep the violence from spilling over. The rumors she is hearing is that raids have either taken place or might take place along the border by Ugandan forces, and that Uganda might take advantage of the turmoil to grab some land along the border.

Tomorrow when I have more time I will share some of what her understanding of these events. A few days ago they had a panel of the Kenyans who are their trainers talk about their perspective of whats going on.

Thanks for the update Bogy.

Instead of finding out today what was going to happen, my daughter's group was brought back to Nairobi. When I talked with her this morning, she said that Peace Corps Washington wanted everyone in Nairobi, but we changed subjects before I had a chance to find out if that meant the group in Tanzania had been brought, or was coming to Nairobi. They are in a hotel this time, instead of in an empty house. The financial officer talked to them, and said that the reason they were in the hotel they were, was because it was directly across from the main bank, so they could close out their accounts. When my daughter asked if that meant they were going home, the financial officer kind of backed up and said they would be hearing the options tomorrow. Someone was supposed to be coming to help them deal with their stress, but my daughter said that if they would just tell them what was going to happen, that would take care of 75% of their stress. Hopefully tomorrow.

It's been a really busy day, and tomorrow doesn't look any better. I will try to share the analysis by Thursday.

My in-Laws came from Iowa, she was a graduate of ISU. Unranked Iowa teams beat the #24 and #25 teams on Halloween.

And I heard that your QB made a poor choice after scoring the tying touchdown, leading to a fifteen yard penalty on the ensuing kickoff. The Cyclones were then able to take advantage of the resulting field position to get close enough to score the winning field goal.

In a NCAA Football season of bizarre endings, this has to rank right up there.

Yep, but wasn't the QB. Was WR. Offense had a great game but defense didn't show up at all. I don't think they were even in the State.

Was raining yesterday so I went to Sams up in Dothan to stock up on some things. Haven't been there in quite a while. I was amazed at how large most of the TVs were. When I walked in they had a 100 in Vizio (I think it was Vizio) that was marked down to something like $1,200. The first rows of TVs were all in the 80 in + sizes. The next couple of rows had the "smaller" models....those 75 and under. I was amazed at how small the 75s looked when lined up with the larger screens.

Q-LED and Mini LED panels have improved the picture quality and the tv's are so thin and nearly without bezels now. I've thought about replacing the 75in 4k DV/HDR LED Sony in my living room with a newer 86in. That's as big as I can go without construction changes. I watch the 75in 4k DV/HDR Q-LED in my bedroom and the difference between the two is very noticeable. There's nothing wrong with the living room tv though and I don't now that I actually watch enough anymore to really justify it. I could move it out to the patio but the 65in Q-LED out there looks really good and I'd have to change the mount to accomdate a larger tv out there.

Pissed off at the crappy healthcare costs

My health Insurance renewal for 2027 just came in. Going from $827 a month to $1,187 a month. Deductible going up a $1k to $9,350. Max out of pocket also going up $1k to $11,000. Doctor co-pay of $40. Urgent Care co-pay $50. ER 50% coinsurance after deductible. That's all in network. Out of network is double, should it be needed.

Have to think about this. I'm really tempted to just go without now. I only go to the doctor once or twice a year. I pay out of pocket for Tirzepitide and can do without the Rosuvastatin (crestor) now. Really tired of spending over $10k a year and getting nothing out of it.

After years with Blue Cross I switched last year to Ambetter as my Blue Cross premium was going from $1200 to $1800 for a Silver plan and the Bronze plan was still going to be $1300 at BCBS. Ambetter was $827 for the same coverage with a Bronze plan. Didn't think it would jump this much so soon.

I'm guessing a Silver plan is probably over $2,000 a month for 2027.

My wife and I use the same Medicare Advantage plan from United Healthcare. (Yes I have heard the horror stories about Medicare Advantage plans but we have used it for the last 5 years). We are both pretty healthy so it works for us. It costs $0.00 per month for both of us and it pays part of our Medicare part B premium. Next year it will be paying $170 per month of the $220 monthly part B premium for both of us. We also each get $90 per quarter to use on OTC products. $0.00 copay for Dr. visits and $55 copay for specialists. Includes dental and hearing coverage. Never have had an issue with it although I don't really use mine other than for the dental, Part B payments and the OTC benefit as I am a veteran and use the VA for all of my medical needs. I just had a kidney that had a cancer mass removed last month and they allowed me to use a non VA surgeon at a non VA hospital through the VA Community Care program. For all of the doctors visits, exams, tests, surgery, hospital stay, meds etc…was around $60,000 and the the VA paid for it entirely. I did have to pay $16 for the Oxycodone pain pills when I left the hospital that I got from my local CVS instead of waiting for a week for the VA to ship them to me from the VA pharmacy.

$0.00 copay for Dr. visits
And THAT is one of the big issues causing a lot of the problems. If the minimum copay for Dr. visits was at least $100 then a LOT of folks would opt out of those visits. If it cost the individual nothing then why should they care. All of my older family members are constantly going to doctor visits.....to them it is an adventure.....an outing that allows them a reason to go out to eat at a restaurant. IF they had to pay one cent out of their own pockets a lot of that crap would stop asap.

Sorry...rant off.

You're not wrong that some people treat free visits like a social outing. But it has to be a balance. Put a $100 barrier on a doctor visit and people don't just skip the pointless ones, they skip the important ones too. Then the stuff that would've been a cheap catch at a checkup shows up later in the ER, sicker and way more expensive. The shift we need is from sick care to actual healthcare.

But it has to be a balance.
Unfortunately, humans tend to suck at finding a balance in just about anything.

They go to the Doctor for everything.
I see a LOT of that. And yes...they DO go to the doctor for EVERYTHING.

I was sick a couple months ago, either light flu or cold. First thing my Mom asked me when I told her was "You need to go to the doctor". I said WHY......I know what to do....it'll last a few days and I'll be fine.

The biggest problem with paying nothing out of pocket is that people quickly don't want to pay a penny for anything. Had an older customer in the store the other day. He mentioned that he had just come from CVS and I guess he wanted to rant. He said he went to pick up his prescription and "they changed my plan and wanted $4, they used to be free...I told them to stick them somewhere and walked out". BTW, he was in the store buying a new remote. So he HAD money for a remote but not $4 for this medicine that somebody somewhere thought he needed.

My prescription before Medicare took over was $30 for 90 days, Medicare took over, now it was $375 last January and $150ish after that 90 days worth.

I've had a H3 receiver for years but just recently began watching and recording 4k content. I'm consistently having the display revert to the upper left quarter of the screen after fast forwarding or pausing the playback of 4k recordings.

Some research I've done blames it on the Hopper as not having the processing power to quickly shift between the FF or pause playback formats and it leaves the playback device in a mode thinking that it's no longer receiving a 4k stream. So it displays the 1/4 image.

I've found that I can quickly recover back to a full screen 4k display by using the remote sequence Pause / Info / Resume.

I've tested this on two different monitors, but they're both LGs, so maybe it's the TVs, and not the Hopper? Is this a known problem? Anyone else experience this?

I had similar problems when I had an H3. Not sure what triggered it. I don't think it was for 4K though, as I don't follow sports and what else has Dish put on in "4K?"

Sony UHD TV and Sony UHD player (no 1/4 there).

I think I was cycling power to work around it.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

I had an old Wireless Joey replaced by a Wireless Joey 4 (Android TV) - still have a Hopper 3 without the Hopper Plus. What do I have to do to get the EPG to show channel logos instead of "Dish"? This is annoying as hell and it's been this way for over a month…

I have Dish with Hopper3. I choose to get local channels OTA and had a "guide list" established at my previous home. Having moved a few miles away, I wanted to update the list by appending a couple new stations via a rescan. As many would know, some stations come in with the UHF/VHF antenna aimed in one direction, while others come in better with a different direction.

Unfortunately, when a scan is done (bringing in 25-30 stations for that particular antenna aim), the dialog screen does not present the established guide list; it presents an empty field to the right that the scanned stations may be selected one by one and added to the empty guide. But because of antenna aim, some stations originally saved are missing, and would have to be retrieved with a different antenna aim. But as I explain, if a 2nd scan is done with a different antenna aim, the stations saved from the first scan are lost.

It troubles me that Dish didn't develop software that would allow a user to simply append only 1 or 2 channels to the established list.

Any thought on this? Has anyone experienced this or heard of this from others?

It troubles me that Dish didn't develop software that would allow a user to simply append only 1 or 2 channels to the established list.
So, you want the ability to, for example, scan while your antenna is pointed to the east and save those channels to your list. Then, you want to scan again with the antenna pointed to the west, and add some of those channels to the list also while retaining the original channels you added from the east?

How would that work? If you move the antenna and some of your channels are no longer are accessible, there's no point in having them on the list. Unless, you want to re-point the antenna each time you switched from an east channel to a west channel and vice versa.

I suppose you could have one of those remote controlled antenna mast like we had back in the 60's. In that case, I can see your point. I think DISH has just designed the system to fit what the vast majority of users actually have. I'm guessing your situation is a pretty narrow use case scenario. I'm just really happy to be able to have my locals without having to pay the $17 month for them.

I just wish DISH would fix the remote control issue that the last few software downloads screwed up. I use the 54 remote and my Hopper is jumping around from off to on, from live to recording.......................like a Kangaroo.
