If there were a better selection of IPTV offerings then they might have something here as a replacement for traditional cable/satellite TV. With a fast enough internet connection, might this thing work for streaming IPTV? Maybe get a basic package of cable channels with some free on-demand content for one low price? It could work if done right. I can't see how they would be able to stream HD content at current home internet speeds, but downloading movies and on-demand content wouldn't be out of reach.

That was the impression I got at Team Summit in Dallas back in May. Charlie alluded to his problems with NAB and the broadcasters in regards to broadcasting distant networks. He said that all the congressmen on Capitol Hill get their local news channels over the internet. He said there are no restricitons such as SHVIA that apply to getting distants over the internet. I got the idea that Charlie was planning on bypassing the regulations by finding a way to transmit any distant network programming to anyone anywhere, regardless. And this was going to be done by streaming the content.

Congressmen and anyone else can get their local news channels over the internet, because the local channel can stream their newscast via their website as the station owns the copyright. Other programming which the station licenses, such as network programming and syndicated programming is NOT streamed.

OH, yes there are.

Dish Network was found in violation of copyright law regarding their use of the distant network license. And in a nutshell, there will be no "legal" way of getting distant networks streamed over the internet. iCraveTV was shut down back in 1999 for trying it.

I'll tell you now that if that is the business plan, this will never get off of the ground.

I don't see how Echostar can charge a dvr fee when you will own the box and have no more dealings with them other than if you buy their video on demand through the ethernet port. If they attach a monthly dvr fee , the box won't sell. THis box was designed to kill TIvo since they charge 12.95 a month for their dvr fee. It was also designed to tap the 21 million ota viewers who don't have satellite or cable .
Riddle me this...

Does anyone know if this TR-50 infringes upon the TiVo Time Warp patent? And before anyone tries to answer no immediately, realize that the injunction (as currently stayed pending appeal) states:

U.S. District Court Judge David Folsom granted TiVo's motion for permanent injunction to prevent EchoStar Communications Corp. (Nasdaq: DISH; "ECC") from making, using, offering for sale or selling in the United States their DVR products at issue in the case (DP-501, DP-508, DP-510, DP-721, DP-921, DP-522, DP-625, DP-942, and all EchoStar DVRs that are not more than colorably different from any of these products).

If the TR-50 isn't "colorably different", it ends up added to the list.
Stacy A
Greg,

My point was that Charlie indicated that if congressmen could get their local news in Washington, on the internet, why can't those of us who aren't lawmakers? We should each be able to get whatever news we want from wherever. He indicated the internet was going to be the key to that. He said the only way to beat NAB was to take away their money - and where do they get their money? Commercials. How do you get rid of commercials? You watch programs on DVR. Simple point. A DVR for every home. I don't know why you have be such a Dish hater.

P.S. Please explain what you mean by "colorably different".

Uh, because you can already do what the congressmen do, and that is go to the website of the local channel and get the news. The newscasts are streamed over the internet.
Stacy A said:

And you can already. And it is because of the internet.

Someone made the "leap of faith" that, "Charlie was planning on bypassing the regulations by finding a way to transmit any distant network programming to anyone anywhere, regardless." That is IMPOSSIBLE. It is not allowed nor will it be. Copyright law already would stop this idea dead in its tracks.
Stacy A said:
P.S. Please explain what you mean by "colorably different".
I cannot. This came from the injunction in the TiVo v. Echostar lawsuit. My guess is if Echostar's appeal is unsuccessful, once the case is remanded back to District Court, TiVo will ask for a clarification on other Echostar DVR's that weren't yet released when the lawsuit started.

Here's what I am trying to figure out. The one true standalone DVR appliance maker left, TiVo, is very close to winning their suit against one IRD DVR competitor, Echostar. Echostar wants to enter the standalone market, with the same "Time Warp" feature that got Echostar in trouble with TiVo in the first place. The question is if the TR-50 is "colorably different" than any of the other Echostar DVR's. Why would TiVo agree to let this receiver on the market if it infringes on their patent?

As far as being a "hater", I am only trying to diffuse half-baked beliefs that have no basis in fact, such even thinking the internet would be a safe way to retransmit distant network feeds. Just call me a "realist".

Well, the bag can't weigh that much, right? But by law food product packaging must display the actual net weight of the product, i.e., the contents of the container, so by any logic, if not law, a store's stated per-ounce cost should reflect that figure. But since there's not any law regulating shelf statements, a store can say whatever it wants without violating any rules. So I guess the answer is more consumer legislation. Or simply caveat emptor.

.a bag...not much
Well, according to the price per ounce on that first bag of coffee he mentions, that would mean the bag weighed over 6 ounces. That bag does NOT weigh 6 ounces. According to Google, an empty bag weighs half an ounce.

I would think that the Vendor/Maker of the product would have a say in it, showing the Correct weight ...
You would think it would be in the contract.

I do look at the ounces of items, but unless its way off, I don't check the math, may have to start now.

Remember when you use to get a 13.5 oz bag of Chips .... Thats a PARTY Size now.

Products sold by the ounce, pound, etc, should always be priced for the product only. Only the shipping weight should include the packaging.

Unless the specific product or its packaging is known at the time of weighing, estimating the tare weight for a PoS system is a tall order.

I'm pretty sure that produce bags can't get any thinner. ;)

You certainly don't want to put unbagged produce on a belt, scale, or in a clerk's hands (gloved or not).

You would be thinking wrong when it comes to goods that are sold by weight (meat, produce, nails). Those items typically go on the scale wrapped without an associated tare. The weight only excludes the sticker because it hasn't been printed yet.

Perhaps only for sliced meat and cheese. Salads and similarly "shifty" or "drippy" items are typically weighed in deli cartons of some sort.

My monster burritos (up to two lbs.) are weighed in their foil jackets or paper mache take-out trays, and the jacket/tray is then "sealed" with the printed label as it comes off the printer.

Precision has to give way to practicality in situations like that.

What ever I get out of the Deli is put into a container when I ask them for it, they weight the container and then add the deli product, thats the way its suppose to be, if the rest of the world is screwing you, you should try the place down the street.

You mean you were pirating the VCII and entering "Wizard numbers" every month after key change? GI finally resorted to changing out the keys twice as often, then even more often, down to just hours, making it mostly untenable?

When i was a kid, i used to salivate envisioning me having a Cband dish. It wasn't until about 1995, I installed my first Cband dish, and i remember it took me about 2 weeks to get that dish aligned properly.. This was before internet, and i had to call and talk with people on the phone about advice on how to properly tune the dish. I can't remember the receiver, but it had a UHF remote. I had the satellite receiver in the living room, but i ported it to two TV's, one in the living room and one in the bedroom. It was so nice being able to control the receiver with the remote in the bedroom about 40 feet from the living room. I remember watching Rosanne feeds where it would air the entire week in succession. Nice nostalgia.

In order to participate in any Cutting Edge testing, you must sign a Non Disclosure Agreement (NDA). Attached are a .docx (Microsoft Word) and PDF version of the latest DirecTV NDA. I found it easiest to complete the .docx version then paste a photo or scan image of my signature, cropped closely to just the signature into it as a picture. Then set Word to wrap text around the picture so that the picture follows the text "Signature".

People who have better PDF tools than I do may prefer that version.

When you apply for any Cutting Edge testing, you will be told how to send the signed copy.

There were some technical issues during the pregame, where 668 was showing the Pacers feed instead of the Timberwolves feed until a few minutes before the game.

On the stream API it looks like some areas need the Sports Pack, what's his zip code?

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

That is a misnomer. In the old days you subscribed to telephone service. That included the telephone line and one telephone. An extension cost $1 a month extra. So that $14,000 over 42 years was for the service not the leased telephone. There is no way they paid $28 a month for 42 years for a leased telephone.

This piece gets me - the fact that Dish has removed SD channels from satellite completely in the name of "HD upgrades". I pay for satellite TV, not streaming...I don't see why they couldn't leave the SD version of the channels on Satellite then put the HD streaming version like they have for other channels.
