What will happen to Blu-ray hardware sales in 2008?

As compared to 2007, that is?

And this would be including the PS3 and all dedicated stand alone players, but not PC drive. I think we'll be able to get results and see how close we are.

I bring this up because I've seen articles where some analysts estimate a 2.5 increase in hardware sales. And many of us talk about good growth, but what is good growth? Double sales? Triple? More?

We may have seriously underestimated the growth for 2008 - and thereafter. See the article quoted in this thread.

Maybe sometime between 2012 & 2015 we'll see Blu-ray sales exceed DVD sales.

I dont think it will happen in 4 years (2012). If it happens, If HD becomes widely adopted by the consumer then maybe it will pass DVD in 10 years IF another format doesnt kill it off. Most people are not going to wheel out their 36" SOny trinitrons to the curb, they are going to wait until the set fails. And even today there are HUGE percentages of people who have HD sets and NO HD programming subscriptions. A lot of IF's have to come true for your dream to materialize. You do realize that BD sold .3% of the disc market in 2007??? 5.6 million compared to 1700 million for DVD. And you are predicting 50% in 4 years? I am not being negative towards BD with this post, only realistic in the hurdles that any HD format will have. My gosh look how many years it took to finally set a firm date for the digital transition? What what the first date? And how many times did it change? And still that has nothing to do with HD only digital.

First, it is the STUDIOS that are eager for a way to preserve their income stream on selling their movies. They see declining profits from DVDs and are looking to the future. Hardly "pie in the sky." If they don't look ahead a few years, they will wither.

OH, I don't know about 4 years. You're referring to the article. But I guess around 2014 I wouldn't be surprised to see Blu-ray overtake DVD in sales, by dollar or units. And there is no other format threatening it. If one develops, it will take years to grow. Save me the download story. That's rental, even if it could be sales- and we simply don't have, and won't for the foreseeable future, enough internet bandwidth to support it. Both "last mile" and backbone.

I agree with Mike. The BDA and studios no doubt have plans to encourage the adoption of Blu-ray. And the digital transition was managed by the government. The government has nothing to do with the spread of Blu-ray.

All these naysayers. You were blind about HD DVD, and so wrong. Why do you think you could possibly be right about the failure of Blu-ray? Your track record for predictions is poor. Don't confuse what you might LIKE to see with what we are likely to see.

You know, the words quoted above sound harsh but the same thoughts have crossed my mind many times since Blu-Ray won. Why should we listen to people that were so convinced that HD-DVD would win? To put it more bluntly, you haven't been correct yet, why should we start listening now?

As navy pointed out in his last line, one of the classic blunders that HD-DVD fanboys began committing over and over when Blu-Ray took the lead was confusing what was happening with what they WANTED to be happening.

Heck, I want Blu-Ray to take over DVD by this Christmas what I want is not what I truly think is going to happen.

Why should we listen to people that were so convinced that HD-DVD would win?
...why should we start listening now?
Who said you should?
...the same thoughts have crossed my mind many times.
WOW! Thoughts... Mind...
From my experience, Blu-boys have neither. At least the PSNR is close to zero...

But hey, no reason to "start listening now", remember...? :)

No, I am referring to your own nonsense here:
Maybe sometime between 2012 & 2015 we'll see Blu-ray sales exceed DVD sales.

What were HD-DVD people smoking thinking they would have a choice in the matter? Profit drives all, and studios want more of it and they see it in BD.
Thats nice but the consumer decided the war. You can argue that BOGO's supported by the companies helped but in the DVD war the numbers of DVD users are so massive that BDA simply does not have the cash to support that kind of effort. And quite frankly its laughable to even suggest that there is a DVD vs BD war right now. Its like saying that Tibet may overtake China.

I do not recall making predictions of victory for either format. What I do recall are stating the facts that HD DVD was the more efficient, mature and consumer friendly format. That fact has never changed. Even today BD still has not caught up with cheap full featured Profile 2.0 players. The BD hardware raping continues. Every HD DVD standalone player met all specs. I also never made any statement on par with the stupidity I see here suggesting the demise of DVD in a few years.

What track record we all looked at the facts and made our decision. I still and will always stand by the fact that every HD DVD stand alone was made to complete specs and was better for the consumer, but as we now see it was more about backroom wheeling and dealing then what was best for the consumer. So again how stupid is it for you and db2 to question someone's track record? I guess your track record is great because: 1. WB actually selected HD DVD but couldn't get another studio to come over with them 2. Sony had the deep pockets to influence behind the scenes? Whose dreaming now? You been doing a lot of dreaming lately

For the naysayers who did not think this service would make it, just added another 4.9M subscribers and that was after the removal of 1.2M Russia subscribers.

This is even better, Paramount+ revenue grew 120% and Subscription revenue grew 74% year-over-year ( 2nd quarter 2021/ 2nd quarter 2022) to $830M, principally reflecting paid subscriber growth on Paramount+.

Now compare that to Peacock with only 13 million paid, 13 million free.

Just noticed, CBS shows on Paramount+ are now same day premieres vs next day, which is how they used to be.

Also in 4K/HDR/DV.

I wonder how providers feel about this, they pay an expensive per sub fee for CBS, who is giving another positive reason to drop Paid Live TV and subscribe to P+.

So, this means that those of us with Commercial Free subs, won't be Commercial Free, unless we wait till after the show is over ?
Which would make same day, not that big of a deal.

Paramount+ has always had the CBS shows on the CBS local channel and yes with commercials. What they are doing now is releasing the OnDemand versions of the show which I believe they don't release until after the shows air on the west coast. And they will be commercial free if you subscribe to the ad free version of Paramount+.

So, the New season won't be on the same day commercial free ???

Looks like the On Demand will Still be the Next Day ...

If you have the Top tier, you could get the LIVE Network feed same as any Cable or OTA would.

  • Premiere date: Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2026
  • Release schedule: Weekly on Tuesdays
  • Network: CBS

*New episodes of NCIS stream live on Paramount+ as they air on CBS for subscribers of the Paramount+ Premium plan. Episodes stream on demand on Paramount+ on the day after they air on CBS for all subscribers.

Watching it on the CBS local on Paramount+ is the exact same as watching it on your CBS local on your current cable/satellite/mvpd/vMVPD service. The OnDemand versions of it can be released on the same day that it airs but usually it is after the show airs on the west coast so if you have a show at 7:00 pm in your time zone and it airs 3 hours later on the west coast at 10:00 pm your time then they could release it at 11:00 pm your time if it was a one hour show. I really have not checked to see what time I can see the ad free OnDemand shows on Paramount+. I know today that last nights FBI and CIA show did not pop into the Up Next row on my Apple TV until this afternoon. I guess it may have been in Paramount+ since last night but I never checked it.

If it wasn't for what I want, I wouldn't need any of this.

Do I need a collection of handheld radios, scanners and speed enforcement countermeasures? Nope, but I want them. Very little, if any of the software used to interface with these devices is available on Linux.

For niche use cases, yes I agree. Kali for ethical hacking and security testing, and running a Cacti server for network monitoring are the two things I have experience in. Plus thousands and thousands of other things, but for every day use I just can't see it. The owner of the GMRS repeater that I pay to access is changing the Tx DPL tones tomorrow, while Chirp is available on Linux, the software to program my MXT500 is not.

I run Fedora and Ubuntu in VMWare, honestly I don't care much for the UI of either of them and I don't feel like spending days/weeks to customize the UI to make it look Windows-like when I could just use Windows. The cartoonish dock at the bottom of the screen reminds me of Apple products.

What is so fantabulous about the Windows UI? By many accounts, it has been going downhill since Windows 7.

There are Linux desktops that offer Windows or Mac UIs, yet you don't hear much chatter about them outside of questions about when the creators might get sued.

Because it's what I prefer. I know I've said this a few times, I use Open Shell to give me the cascading start menu a la WIN 95 and NT4.0. The only reason I went from Windows Vista to 7 back in the day was because of Classic Shell. I cannot stand anything other than the OG start menu from 30+ years ago. I'm using ExplorerPatcher to give me Windows 10 UI elements of the taskbar and right click context menus.

If you could take a look at how I set up Windows 95, you'd find many similarities to how I use 11.

I could probably use that as a starting point, but I don't like the full size icons. If you have to click on each folder that's also a no-go for me, it has to be cascading.

I used to have Peppermint Linux in a VM, that was about as close as I could get to recreating a Windows NT4.0 style of menu structure, but I could never get it to scale properly in VMWare on a 4K display and eventually gave up.

Whatever the boot up time it's fine with me. The longest part of my bootup is the HP SureStart BIOS integrity check. Once that is done, it's only a few more seconds. I haven't done this reg tweak yet since the reformat, but I switched the bootup animation to the Windows 10 style spinning circle of dots, and it's two and a half rotations. I can live with that.

I hope you don't believe that makes it wonderful (especially when you're using workarounds for Microsoft's malfeasance).

I use LibreOffice as opposed to Microsoft office (even in Windows) because it's UI is like the Office of old, so I'm putting my money where my mouth is (in a manner of speaking). The ribbon was one of the worst ideas to come out Redmond.

I'm also seeing longer appearances of the blue bar at the top and the "3 blue bars" loading symbol.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Apple has finally released their Apple TV 4K with built-in Siri and a microphone so it can respond to your queries even if you don't have the remote. It also increases in price, to $299. I had been planning on updating my current Apple TV 4K streamers, but that's $600 for the two of them, and that's a pass at this point.

At $299, it had better come with 256 GB of Storage, Gigabit (or better) Ethernet, the latest HDMI tech and standards, and one year of free Apple One. But it probably won't…

Not a bit. IMO, Apple's are slow to boot up. Time is about the same with 1st gen and 3rd. Roku runs rings around them in that department. I only reason I stuck, is the Apple infrastructure, which has it's definite advantages. But $300 is a deal breaker. Later, Apple!
