My wife falls for the flashy ads for DirecTV. She calls them directly and orders some kind of package thats supposed to be special rates and no DVR charge for two years. She orders one DVR and one standard receiver. We already had DishNetwork that was a DIY installation when I moved here. Since I was planning on doing some FTA stuff, I left strict instructions that none of the existing dish, wiring, etc. was to be touched.

I get home and see a DirecTV dish on my mount with one tiny LNB on it. All other recent DirecTV installs I have seen have an elliptical dish with multiple LNBs. The installer used all my wiring, except he put in a new grounding block and tied it down neater than I had.

Then he brought in two standard receivers. My wife said she ordered a package with a DVR, he says she'll have to call customer service to straighten it out. He told her he had to use my existing wiring. If he ran any wire, he would have to charge extra.

When my wife finally got customer service on the phone, they tell her she is not eligible for the special package because she was an existing customer! Yeah, for about 30 minutes! After much arguing and getting bounced around, somebody finally told her they would get her a DVR. The only time the installer could come back was SUNDAY!

While they did send a letter acknowledging her order (for two standard receivers), she has yet to get anything in writing that tell her what all the charges will be.

If anyone has any tips for dispute resolution with these boneheads, I'd appreciate it.

Is this the normal way DirecTV does business? I sure feel sorry for their customers.

Its pretty clear that he got a single lnb dish for one sat, as for the instructions if he wrote them down then thats pretty clear but up to his wife to make sure the installer saw it. Im not sure why the installer would have said he had to charge to run wires though its most likely an atempt to get money out of a woman. The OP's wife should have rescheduled the install and as for the flashy sales add thats common practice for reseller partners to do crap like that of bait and switch.

I agree. My only question would be since this is an SD installation, and the OP is in Texas, would his install require a single LNB dish or a multiple LNB dish?

I don't know if they are placing anything other than the 5 LNB dishes anymore, due to the impending change to Mpeg 4 format, which cannot be seen from the 101, 110 and 119

All recent SD orders here net you only 2 18" dishes. (we're in a 72.5 market)

IF your getting info from the 72 sat, that would explain that as that sat is mainly for locals, there are alot of single LNBs out there being used for locals. Those are for locals that are not already on one of the newer sats.

I forgot about them, but for the main programming , they are all going to the 5 LNB set up.

No, reread what I posted - they do NOT install 5LNB dishes for EVEN the main prog for SD only subs.
They STILL install ONLY 18" dishes for 101, PLUS a 2nd 18" for locals. (that's why I said 2 18" dishes ... ;) ;) )
Again, they ONLY install 5LNB dishes here IF you get HD - period!

Well thats NOT what they SAID and were DOING earlies last year, it was stated that EVERYONE would be going to the new 5 LNB dishes.

IF you go back far enough, you may find the hundreds of posts about this type of thing ....

I don't have time to track it down, but they have been doing this for at least 2 years now because I have had a 5 LNB set up for at least 2 years now.
I understand that it is mainly for the HD users, but it was also reported that all would be going that way.

I may be mistaken but,
Can you get mpeg4 programming with a single LNB set up ?

Are the addl LNB's not different from the KA LNB's, if not, why did they change ....

Shortly they will change all programming over to mpeg4, your saying that the old single LNB will handle this ?

Jimbo

In this area the 3LNB is the SD norm because our locals are on 119. My father got one last fall.

5LNBs are only for HD here.

As far as MPEG4 is concerned, it is likely that one day D* will go to MPEG4 from the older satellite positions as well as the new ones. They surely won't abandon the old slots when everything becomes MPEG4.

20-20 hindsight..You should have made arrangements to be home for the work..Ok, if you left SPECIFIC instruction that the existing cable was not to used, that info should have been on the w/o. The tech must use equipment listed on the w/o . Oh yeah, if you did not order HD programming, you got the proper dish..
Charges..if your house is dificult to wire, it can be considered custom work by the tech. His discretion. Has to work that way. However, in most cases if the cble work is standard and within the paprameters of a "standard" or "basic" install, the work is not chargable.
D
Agree with others that the fault lies with you and your wife. If you want things done a certain way these days, you have to pay. I hope you realize that after this experience. Good Luck.
D
Shortly they will change all programming over to mpeg4, your saying that the old single LNB will handle this ?

I GUARANTEE you it will be a LONG, LONG time before SD goes MPEG4 - AIN'T gonna happen! And, since it is NOT going to, NO need to put those expensive 5LNB dishes in for folks that will NEVER get any use out of them.

Now there IS an exception to this & that is in the local SD markets that are using MPEG4 birds for locals, such as Palm Springs & a couple others I can't remember. But those are exceptions.

It'll happen sooner than you think now that Dish looks to be rolling out not just additional hd soon but also IPTV service to some of its receivers. Theres alot at stake with getting and keeping customers and it will be more than just who has how many hd channels it'll also be picture quality and additional channels and loclas of both types plus a better on demand than what both providers have now.

Has anyone noticed an FF stutter with 713? I used to be able to hit FF a few times and skip smoothly. After 713 (maybe 712), when I skip forward, there is a definite stutter for as many times as I have pressed FF.

Can anyone check on this and report back? Recorded programs and then press skip forward a few times to see if it's smooth? Normally, it just jumps to the right place after the skips.

I'm getting fabulous picture on Ch. 148 4k, but zero audio with H713. This is with a recorded show (Notre Dame game). Anyone else have this? Audio is fine on every other channel.

My wife mentioned that her remote is acting strange this morning. She hit FF and it went to 15x FF.

It's a known issue.
For a temporary fix, go into the menu, Audio, and turn Dolby Audio "OFF". You will have PCM stereo audio.

I was able to give the tech ops team some data logs so they could diagnose the problem, and they rolled me back to H708 temporarily. It fixed that issue.

They let me know that they understand what caused the issue, and it will be fixed within a few weeks in a new update.

Stargate SG-1 cancelled, Atlantis renewed

The future of Stargate is in question today, as SCI FI Channel has cancelled the long-running Stargate SG-1, Multichannel News reported today and a GateWorld source has confirmed. The news regrettably follows the airing of the show's milestone two-hundredth episode on Friday.

Stargate Atlantis, meanwhile, has been renewed for a fourth season, with the network hoping to see that the spin-off series can stand alone, according to a source.

I have gotten back into watching SG-1 and I have recorded most of the episodes to binge watch. What episodes are about the Antarctic or was this a movie? Also where could I watch the SG-1 movies?

Well, there are a couple involving the Antarctic. "Solitudes", S1 E17 (one of my favorites), Then, "Lost City', S7 E21 and E22. Then, in the SGA pilot, "Rising", S1 E1 and E2, it starts out in the Antarctic for about the first 20 minutes or so.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Season 2 order already in hand:

'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' Renewed for Season 2, Tatiana Maslany to Guest Star in Season 1

I've not been optimistic about this show based on what I've read so far. Seems to be aimed at a younger audience. Interesting though that Tatiana Maslany will have some sort of role.

Yeah, the foot stuff was just nasty. I kept thinking of how dirty her feet would get traipsing around shoe-less. Funny, I love being shoe less at home and never wear shoes indoors in my home for long, but seeing her laying on all her furniture with her bare feet hanging out just kind of grossed me out.

There would still be dirt ,dust in the future I am sure. So walking around the station like she did she would get stuff on her feet. I am sure the robot vacuum is still going to miss stuff, with all those different alien species running around there.

I don't know, but I still don't like her walking through the station or the academy with out her shoes. It looks unprofessional and very "hippy like" for someone of her status and I personally don't get off to feet, so there is that. ;)

They didn't sell many, they were pricey and not out long. Quickly got replaced by the Hopper.
T
They were high-end specialty, somewhat buggy and the 612/622/722 just overwhelmed it in popularity.
HipKat
I think they were more of a transitional receiver bridging the VIPs to the Hopper. They were a PITA to install and were buggy. Personally, I thought at the time that they were the best receiver out there. The versatility of the VIP's with the new Hopper GUI and, by far, the coolest-looking front plate and lighting.

I don't recall that they came out just before hopper, but rather that they came out even before 722. Or could be thinking of 921.

As to the title pf the post, "rare" does not necessarily mean valuable or desirable.
