ET,' 'Insider' Go HD
CBS' hits jump on the hi-def bandwagon
By Paige Albiniak, Broadcasting & Cable, 4/21/2008

CBS' Entertainment Tonight and The Insider will make the leap to high-definition come September, making them the first two entertainment newsmagazines to announce such a move.

"We know from watching sports that high-definition really enhances the moment," says Terry Wood, president of creative affairs and development at CBS Television Distribution. "When you watch a football game or any sport in hi-def, you feel like you are there. Making the viewers who tune in to what we do every day feel like they are on the red carpet or at the Oscars with us is a really important experience for them.

"When you have brands like ET and The Insider, they really deserve a big canvas," Wood adds. "High-definition is going to give us that next step."

"Everything is so much bigger and brighter and jumps off the screen in high-definition," says Linda Bell Blue, executive producer of both shows. "Everything from the colors of the actresses' dresses on the Oscar red carpet to the facets of the diamonds in their rings and necklaces will be more brilliant."

Syndicated shows have trailed primetime, sports and even local news in switching to hi-def, but they are coming around. CBS' The Oprah Winfrey Show, produced by Winfrey's Harpo Productions, last week said it would start broadcasting in high-definition this fall. Last fall, CBS' Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy!, produced by Sony Pictures Television, became the first two syndicated first-run shows to jump to HD. This fall, Disney-ABC's Wizard's First Rule, a weekly first-run fantasy hour, also will appear in HD.

Making the move has been in the works for the past year and a half at CBS, and involves migrating the entire production of both shows from the company's historic Paramount lot near Los Angeles' Hancock Park neighborhood to the brand-new CBS Studio Center on Radford Avenue in Studio City, Calif. Production staff will begin moving over to the new studio this summer, with rehearsals starting in August. Both ET and The Insider will offer their entire shows in hi-def come Sept. 8, Bell Blue says; that's the day ET premieres its 28th season.

Producers won't flip the switch for months, but both shows have begun producing HD pieces in preparation. Bell Blue says the first such segment will feature Manhattan-based host Lara Spencer reporting on location from Barney's department store, which producer Jerry Bruckheimer took over to shoot his new movie Confessions of a Shopaholic, opening next February. That shoot was the first time The Insider broke out its new Sony XD hi-def cameras, which will be used to gather video in the field.

The shows' producers will join forces in a newsroom that is three times bigger than the space in its current headquarters, so both staffs can more easily collaborate. ET and The Insider will each get new sets, designed by Steve Bass, who also creates the sets used by the Emmy and Grammy awards. And design firm Rezn8 is adding a new high-definition graphic look, using Apple-based software and computers.

Both shows will use Avid's Interplay non-linear workflow production system, the next generation of Avid's iNews, to cut and design video packages from the desktops, according to Bell Blue. Miles of cable have already been laid, with all-new digital master control rooms constructed to serve both shows. And some 28 edit bays will be available to the shows' producers, who will continue the 24/7 work of getting ever-breaking entertainment news out the door—only now in HD.

"Hi-def is a whole new ball game," Bell Blue says. "The makeup is different, the lighting is different, even the way we shoot is different. We really are blazing a trail here."

But.....if you like Tulsa King....looks like you would probably like this as well. I don't mind spin-offs as long as they don't involve a sassy niece who moves from the big city

I thought I would come here and find lots of complaints about the update to the dish anywhere mobile app, but am not seeing any. It used to look just like the desktop webpage. Now you can no longer filter by sports channels or movie channels. Plus that they made it look like a big button telephone and you see fewer channels in the screen which requires more scrolling. Yes I realize you can look at sports then select which sport you want to look at, I just liked being able to see all sporting events in the guide with all other channels being filtered out. Am I alone in the wilderness on this?

I'm not a big fan of the new layout, especially on my Apple TV. It used to look like the old Guide layout on the Hopper 3, but they changed parts of that, too.

You don't like Tony, or Tony as the Director (he's only been there for 30 seconds now) or you don't like NCIS ?

No. Bring in someone new.🤔 Tony is not serious enough for me. Parker is too close to the team and Tim is too young to take over IMO.

I don't think Tim and Tony are that far apart in Age ...

Remember what Tony said to Tim when they first got back together ...
Tony said: I am the New Tony, Tim .... (something to that effect)

Tony has changed, he's been running his Security Business ... I'm sure he has grown up.

Give it time ... your judging the New Tony from the old Tony.

It sounds like Tim won't be around the Team much longer either.

Might be worth a watch when it comes out. Looks like typical big corp against the little guy movie BUT....there is a reason this plot type is so oft repeated, it draws audiences.

If you're going try to read / listen to the book (can't recommend the audio book enough) before this comes out, I'd avoid trailers.

Trailer below, spoiling it to make sure you read the above bold message first. The book / audio book are fantastic. Go into this blind if you can IMO!

Kind of disappointed at how much they show. A lot still to see, but man, some good reveals in the book that are just served up here.

I've seen it twice. Can't recommend the audio book enough, Ray Porter's performance is amazing and there's so much more in the book than the movie.

Forgot to comment. I did watch when it first came out on MGM. I enjoyed it a lot. I think reading the book made it easier to watch. Several friends commented it was a little hard to follow.

I agree. That can go for pretty much any book vs movie. Back when I was single I would read any Stephen King or John Grisham book I could get my hands on. When you read a book you make up the scenes and characters in your mind.....the movie version always disappoints.

Selfish Drake Maye holds back on giving the ball to Bills unlike Jags game, gets the win on the road.

A big win for the Patriots, and they are now 3-2.

Browns lose a close one with... The Jets. That is a classic Browns loss (granted, any loss is a classic one it seems). 49'ers, Vikings, and Chiefs remain undefeated. The AFC north have a three way tie at 3-2 for second place.

After having experienced Gus Ferguson trying to call soccer games, I'm uncertain why NFL football analysts get hate. Even the "worst" of them are pretty good.

I had quit watching this show years ago because I ended up more annoyed than entertained. Well......I'm STILL more annoyed than entertained. I DO find it interesting to see how things work behind the scenes at many businesses. What annoys me is how utterly out of touch CEOs are with the companies they run. At the end of almost every episode the head of the company is amazed at how hard the employees have to work and many times have to work around impossible guidelines set forth from headquarters.

I found this one interesting because the new CEO had big plans for this company, Muscle Maker Grill, and it looked like the stores were all pretty busy. Recent history hasn't been good to this company however. I bet the covid lockdowns were the real killer.
