It looks as though the MPAA is looking to start to stop all DVR recordings.
This looks as though it is the camels nose in the tent.

MPAA Pushes Early HD VOD Releases
But the plan would prevent recording films on a DVR.
By Swanni

Washington, D.C. (June 20, 2008) -- Hollywood studios this week started campaigning for a plan to air first-run movies on cable and satellite HD VOD shortly after their theatrical release -- and well before their release on DVD and Blu-ray.

The plan, however, calls for a FCC rule change that would permit the studios to block the Video on Demand films from being recorded on DVRs. It would also prevent HDTVs with analog outputs from displaying the movies.

The Motion Picture Association of America, the studios' trade group, has filed a petition with the FCC to enact the changes which it says are needed to prevent illegal copying.

Dean C. Garfield, the MPAA's executive vice president, this week highlighted the plan in his keynote speech before the tranFORMATions entertainment conference, according to Home Media Magazine.

Garfield told the conference that the studios are anxious to offer home viewers more entertainment options, including the ability to watch a new movie shortly after it plays in the theater. The MPAA executive added that the anti-copying restrictions would not affect the consumer.

"There is no downside for consumers," Garfield said, according to Home Media. "They will lose nothing they don't already have."

However, the Consumer Electronics Association, the trade group for electronics companies, opposes the MPAA's plan, saying it gives too much control to the studios.

The National Association of Theater Owners has yet to comment on the plan, but it also could be concerned about losing customers who would wait until a new movie is offered on HD VOD. Likewise, video rental stores could lose business under the plan.

The FCC has begun accepting public comments on the MPAA's rule change request.

If the waiver is granted, the studios say they plan to offer "high-value, High-Definition digital movies to consumers for enjoyment in their homes sometime prior to release on prerecorded media such as DVD."

Cable and satellite operators -- and studio executives -- have openly speculated in recent months about offering some movies on HD VOD in advance of their DVD release, with some officials even saying some films could be offered on the same day as the theatrical release.

Presumably, the early HD VOD release would carry a larger price tag than other VOD films, which usually cost around $3.99.

I don't like the trend/precedent that this sets. It will be the first step towards never owning media again, which I don't like.

Cheers,

They would never give up that revenue stream. This is simply a new home distribution model for (near) first run movies. These movies would likely play a week or two after hitting the theaters, and months before home sales and PPV.

To me this seems like a nice alternative to the theater for some movies since it usually costs our family over $50 now days to go to a show (I guess we should really skip the snacks, but that is part of the fun).
jayn_j
The analog vs video thing was a bit of a red herring. What they meant to say was only sets that had HDCP compliant inputs. They don't want anyone making a copy under any circumstances. If you don't have such a set, then welcome to the world of electronic obsolescense. If you want the feature, you upgrade. Otherwise you continue to enjoy at your current level of features.

For example, I just upgraded my receiver from an ancient but good quality Dolby pro-logic machine. I now have dolby digital/dts in several flavors and get additional features from my hd-dvd player.

What bothers me is that same camel-nose problem of setting a precedence. In spite of others comments about killing the golden goose, the studios have a long history of trying to force a ppv model, going back to the Betamax case in the '70s.
I want to own my library. I worry about revisionist releases. For example, Lucas red0oing Episode 4 and trying to make it the 'real' one.

Read a novel by Connie Willis called "Remake" that addresses the problem for a cautionary view on the subject that is better written than I can accomplish.
O
Jayn j is on the right track with hdcp. what i could understand form researcing hdcp is that tvs with hdcp technology will not output on their analog outputs when a source is protected such as the vods we are discussing.

8bitbytes, that hdfury device, seems like it would answer the question for bypassing the hdcp. seems pretty cool.

Each generation is much more restrictive. There isn't much further to go now, other than not owning the media.

I don't disagree with the costs, but as I understand it the theater gets precious little of that ticket revenue and they have to make their money someplace.
F
John Kotches commented "I don't disagree with the costs..."

Well, I do. The idea of paying $12 to $20 to watch any movie ever made on a small screen TV offends me. Many first run movies are available at the theatre for $6 to $8. And you don't have to watch them on the typical 30, 40 or 50 inch TV screen--you get a 25, 30 foot or even bigger screen with great surround sound and theatre style ambience.

It is true that the theatres rip you off on the price of popcorn and a coke (another $7) but you can always take a long drink of water before you go.

The movie studios are trying to create another revenue stream coming from those people who want the first run experience without the trouble of getting out of their houses. And, of course, they understand that many of these same people will buy the Blu-ray of the same movie the moment it comes out.

As a person who uses the analog component inputs on my TV, it offends me that the studios would want to exclude me on the grounds that I might want to DVR their product for re-watching, and thus avoid buying the DVD or Blu-ray product. The Sony Fair Use decision of the Supreme Court is directly on point here, and I hope the MPAA and its minions go straight to hades.

Best regards,
Fitzie

If this comes to pass I will NEVER buy another movie in any form for the rest of my life.

And if you think I am kidding ask Directv the lengths I will go to avoid something I do not like.

Since it was already "paid" for, I spent the two hours of my time watching the John Cena action movie on Apple TV, "Matchbox The Movie" even though the reviews were brutal. It was better than I expected, so I didn't feel like I had wasted an afternoon watching it. But it felt like another "Reacher"/"Neghley"/"Mission: Impossible"/"Fast & Furious" crash and blow stuff up with lots of automatic gunfire mixed in movie featuring covert CIA operatives.

I don't think we'll get a follow-up movie from this. I expect Mattel will have other toy lines to exploit.

For some reason, the satelliteguys.us site is loading a lot slower than usual on both Chrome on my Asus laptop and Safari on my iPhone.
I'm also seeing longer appearances of the blue bar at the top and the "3 blue bars" loading symbol.
Is anyone else also having the same problem? Thanks in advance.

Yeah... that was me...

I did another security update and it required me to reboot the server.

I also did a patch for something else and accidently put two ;'s in the config file so when the server rebooted it wouldn't restart a service because of the extra ; in the config file.

And of course as I did it my step dad called me slowing me down in figuring it out.

That was a Scott mistake. Sorry about that.

Monday 11/2 is a full slate for NBA League Pass as all 30 teams are playing and 14 out of 15 total games are on NBALP. Only one national TV game on Peacock/NBCSN (Thunder @ Cavs).

DirecTV is even having to use several MLB EI channels (from 745-748) and a NHL CI (770) channel to fit all of them in the guide close together. 5 games at 7:30 ET, 3 games at 8 ET, 2 games at 8:30 ET, 1 game at 9 ET, 3 games at 10 ET. Luckily NHL CI is light on Monday (3 games on CI).

DirecTV is providing both broadcast feeds for all League Pass games except Hornets, Magic, Bucks & Raptors that night. These are all teams that have local broadcasts via a OTA channel which is on spotbeams and have streaming deals (DTC) that are not exclusive DAZN teams which DirecTV just signed a deal with (à la Spurs, Grizzlies, Cavs, Pacers & T'Wolves). Its also very common that we don't get Raptors broadcast very often from TSN or Sportsnet Ontario on League Pass.

Only the Knicks, Nets, Wizards, Bulls, Celtics, Rockets, Lakers, Warriors, Avalanche, Sharks and Bruins feeds will be using remaps of 24/7 RSNs that night. The rest will be relying on the part time feeds, including the Nuggets, Blackhawks and Kings who will be on their alt/overflow channels, and MSG Western NY will be live on channel 635-1 to carry Buffalo area ads during the Knicks game.

The NHL Network alternate will be live on channel 215-1 with Red Wings @ Panthers for those blacked out of Golden Knights @ Bruins on the main feed.

The Thunder @ Cavaliers game will be on one of Peacock Game Pass channels that night for commercial customers, they'll also have the back to back U-Conn Women's and Men's Basketball. One of the part time feeds will also be in use for WWE Raw via Joe Hand promotions.

I have a DISH Hopper 3 (Software H713) with Hopper Plus (Software P15403). I have not tried streaming services but I primarily watch TVB Jadeworld international package which is only available by streaming and when I have an issue, I usually have to go to a non-streaming satellite channel first before the streaming channels will work again. What software versions do you have and what is the error message if any are showing on your screen? or is that Dish downloading logo just stuck and never finishes?

I'm on H713 on the Hopper and P15403 on the Hopper Plus. It shows internet connection issues and doesn't finish loading the various services. I see the "loading circle going around. Sometimes I get a message saying that the service is having trouble loading my content and to check the internet connection.

Did it ever work correctly before? Hard to say what the problem is. Usually for streaming, it will show the Dish logo with lines sweeping down to show downloading, never seen the circle issue. Did you try a manual reboot, red button reset, power cord unplug/replug to see if it makes a difference.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....
