I took a half day from work this morning, only to have another installer from Installs, Inc. call this afternoon once again claiming that "Voom never sent him the upgraded antenna I was scheduled to have installed". This is now the sixth (count 'em six) time in the last three months that this has happened to me, and because of it I am still sitting here with no network channels (ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, etc). Each time, I called 1-800-Get-Voom, trying to be as polite and patient as possible, and each time the CSR on the other end apologized repeatedly, put me on hold to call Installs, Inc and "get this straightened out for good", and then scheduled me for another installation appointment about a week later. Finally today I told the Rep (Beth) on the other end of the phone line that I had now wasted and missed the equivalent of 3 full work days of pay, was getting fed up, and wasn't happy with just hearing that they would just have to reschedule me. She put me on hold to call Installs, Inc again... this time she came back with a different answer. Installs Inc had now "changed their position on my matter" and had told her that if I wanted to get my local network channels I would have to purchase the $600 antenna they were originally going to install for free "out of my own wallet". After putting me on hold for another 3 minutes, she told me the guy on the other line at Installs, Inc was "sure that this would work for my location", but that Installs, Inc would not cover the cost because they could not "justify the expense". After telling the Rep that this was completely unacceptable since, not only had I already had six botched installation appointments, been told that Voom was sending the installer the antenna (I was even told the brand, model number, and that it would take them a week to ship it out), been asked for my permission to have two large poles installed in my backyard, and been told every time that Voom was covering the cost, but I had also been told I would receive a "retroactive refund for one month's service" because of all my inconveniences (along with the fact that my original installer had not aligned the dish correctly and that my first IRD was defective and it took them over a month to replace it) and never received it. She left me with those fateful last words "I'll have to send this to our escalation department for review" and, as expected, I never heard back from anybody.

I have been a very vocal supporter of Voom, both online and around town. I have tried to stand behind the company through all of the problems outlined above along with others I have not mentioned. I dealt patiently with lack of Olympic coverage, local sporting events, and other network programming I have endured because of this OTA antenna fiasco. I passed up better rates offered by my local cable company (who now offers more cable channels along with 21 HD channels including my local networks, the pay channels, and HDNet). And I have tried to work along with the CSR's and Voom's billing department with the one month's service credit I was promised and never received. All because I believed in Voom's vision. But I am now at my breaking point. It is embarrassing, after bragging about and promoting Voom to my friends and family, that I now have to drive to a friend's house to watch my home-team's ballgame or my local nightly news. I refuse to pay $600 for an antenna I was promised for free six times before and was always left disappointed about. I refuse to let my wasted time be worthless by allowing the month's credit I was promised to fall through the cracks in Voom's infamous escalation department. I refuse to be told by CRS's that "they don't blame me for cancelling, they deal with tons of them every day for the same reasons". The Voom I believed in is better than that. I've gone ahead and scheduled an appointment with my local cable company (SECTV) for an install of their extended cable, HD package, and every available pay movie channel on the 25th, if this isn't taken care of by then, I will unfortunately be joining the ranks of other past Voom subscribers adding to that high churn rate we hear so much about. This is my final cry for help. Wilt, or anyone else who may be able to help, are you listening?

***Update***

Ok. I just got a call from my local installation company. They confirmed that I was approved from Voom for the upgraded antenna and they set up an installation date for next Wednesday. However, when I asked the guy what kind of antenna they were bring out for me, instead of him saying the Winegard HD8200p I was expecting, he only said I was getting a "parabolic antenna" and he was confused when I asked if that was going to require a mast to be installed in my backyard or if it included the pre-amp. When I talked to Michelle at Voom's Corperate Office, she had assured me that I was approved for a large directional antenna. I'm not sure what a parabolic antenna is, is this the same thing as the large directional deep fringe antenna?
DarrellP
A parabolic antenna is like your satellite dish. See this link. Maybe it's a new fangled design?

I have had the same kind of trouble you speak of...first i got voom and the OTA did not work..so i call and complain and they promptly shedule something, but the day comes and no one...so i call again, this time they shedule me and the guy comes..He explains they had not approved me yet...and that was why he never came the first time..fair enough....so i get the wingard Sqaureshooter(don't know the model #) and things are looking up all channels seemed to be working, but fifteen minutes after the guy leaves..boom no fox..no i can't watch football or nascar...so i wait a few days and then i start to get only ABC which comes from another state while fox,CBS,and NBC are in my own city...so i call again...new appointment...new install company..and no one shows..so i call again and they get my old installer here he replaces the power supply.and they sorta work but not really...so he requests a upgrade like what you were talking about with the two ten foot poles, but since this was about a month ago..and i thought voom was shutting down i never called...when i heard they would not .i called and they were very helpful on the phone..."lets go ahead and set up that upgrade he says"..i even explain what happened last time with the wrong install company..and they almost got me with that one again..but i fixed that....but here i am...it 4/2/05 and is 2 hours past when they were to come and no one...i know what happened. They will say i was not approved yet..but you'd think i could have been given a phone call...anyways sorry to rant and if i brought this thread from the deep ..i feel like this guy... i just want someone to come and install the right antenna for the job whether i have to pay for it or not...

thanks ,
Johnson

Welcome to the forum, pkjohnson420! Sorry to hear about your problems. Unfortunately, No-call/no-show situation is not very uncomon. The only way to avoid this is to take the process in your own hands. As mentioned in many threads and in our FAQ, it is very important that you contact your local installer directly. A couple of phone calls may help you avoid problems and frustration. Good luck!

After you order your system and get an install date, call Installs Inc at 888-987-3474 and have the local installer call you. Sometimes Installs Inc will give you the name of the local Installer other times they won't. They can tell the installer to give you a call.

After you get in touch with local installer, keep in touch with him/her to ensure that your equipment has been delivered on time. There has been problems with equipment not delivered on time. It is imperative to keep on top of this otherwise your installation might not occur.
P
High Ilya,
thanks for the welcome...i do have and did call and leave a message with the installer that i have been using...just for a little background.i'm in Mobile,Al..and my guy comes from Miss. why i don't know, but the guy is always helpful and i doubt this is his fault.Come to think of it i don't remember if i got a confirmation email.i'm pretty easy going about the whole thing..If i don't hear from my installer..i'll call Voom again...my local cable provider has only one local "NBC" and most of their regular channels are not digital so.i support voom or at least until my six months are up.lol...

If it wasn't for what I want, I wouldn't need any of this.

Do I need a collection of handheld radios, scanners and speed enforcement countermeasures? Nope, but I want them. Very little, if any of the software used to interface with these devices is available on Linux.

To each there own but I've found that Windows can't do much more than Linux can. Can't have everything. ☹️

For niche use cases, yes I agree. Kali for ethical hacking and security testing, and running a Cacti server for network monitoring are the two things I have experience in. Plus thousands and thousands of other things, but for every day use I just can't see it. The owner of the GMRS repeater that I pay to access is changing the Tx DPL tones tomorrow, while Chirp is available on Linux, the software to program my MXT500 is not.

I run Fedora and Ubuntu in VMWare, honestly I don't care much for the UI of either of them and I don't feel like spending days/weeks to customize the UI to make it look Windows-like when I could just use Windows. The cartoonish dock at the bottom of the screen reminds me of Apple products.

What is so fantabulous about the Windows UI? By many accounts, it has been going downhill since Windows 7.

There are Linux desktops that offer Windows or Mac UIs, yet you don't hear much chatter about them outside of questions about when the creators might get sued.

Because it's what I prefer. I know I've said this a few times, I use Open Shell to give me the cascading start menu a la WIN 95 and NT4.0. The only reason I went from Windows Vista to 7 back in the day was because of Classic Shell. I cannot stand anything other than the OG start menu from 30+ years ago. I'm using ExplorerPatcher to give me Windows 10 UI elements of the taskbar and right click context menus.

If you could take a look at how I set up Windows 95, you'd find many similarities to how I use 11.

I could probably use that as a starting point, but I don't like the full size icons. If you have to click on each folder that's also a no-go for me, it has to be cascading.

I used to have Peppermint Linux in a VM, that was about as close as I could get to recreating a Windows NT4.0 style of menu structure, but I could never get it to scale properly in VMWare on a 4K display and eventually gave up.

Whatever the boot up time it's fine with me. The longest part of my bootup is the HP SureStart BIOS integrity check. Once that is done, it's only a few more seconds. I haven't done this reg tweak yet since the reformat, but I switched the bootup animation to the Windows 10 style spinning circle of dots, and it's two and a half rotations. I can live with that.

I hope you don't believe that makes it wonderful (especially when you're using workarounds for Microsoft's malfeasance).

I use LibreOffice as opposed to Microsoft office (even in Windows) because it's UI is like the Office of old, so I'm putting my money where my mouth is (in a manner of speaking). The ribbon was one of the worst ideas to come out Redmond.

I used to pin the C: drive to the Win Taskbar and it would open in cascading style

DEATH TO NEXGEN!

It's dead, they just don't know it yet. They killed it by forcing DRM on it, and that TOTALLY botched implementing it.

There is absolutely NO compelling reason for anybody to switch to ATSC3.0. They only want it as a total and complete money grab.
Mister B
What bothers me is the total waste of broadcasting spectrum in this very crowded market. It has been almost three years now since KFOX converted their broadcast tower to ATSC 3.0 and moved all of their channels to other towers causing noticeable degradation of the picture quality.
I have a Sony TV with 3.0 capabilities but still use the 1.0 version of locals due to the fact that one or all of the 3.0 channels are often missing or unwatchable. In this city of 800K I doubt that more than a few hundred even know about ATSC 3.0.
The only thing that could motivate me to be interested in 3.0 would be if all of the minor networks (diginets) could be in at least 720P rather than blurry ultra-compressed 480i.
Three years is long enough to waste one of the few available RF frequencies in the area for this trial.
It is time to either move on with this experiment or call it quits.

Over the past few weeks, I have had problems connecting to streaming services (Netflix, HBO et al). When I go to the TV's native Channels, I have no problem. The Dish internet troubleshooter shows I have a good internet connection. I'm wondering whether it's an issue with my internet provider or a problem with the Dish software on the Hopper Plus. Anyone else seeing this?

I have a DISH Hopper 3 (Software H713) with Hopper Plus (Software P15403). I have not tried streaming services but I primarily watch TVB Jadeworld international package which is only available by streaming and when I have an issue, I usually have to go to a non-streaming satellite channel first before the streaming channels will work again. What software versions do you have and what is the error message if any are showing on your screen? or is that Dish downloading logo just stuck and never finishes?

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....
