OLYMPICS: Can you believe this photo????

From TMZ today:

"How do you ingratiate yourself into a foreign culture? Take a photo mocking the way they look!

The Spanish national basketball team, gold medal contenders at the Olympics in Beijing, was featured in a full page ad that shows the team pulling back at their eyes in a slanty-eyed gesture. According to the Guardian, the ad (which is for a freight company) ran in a Spanish newspaper."

Isn't Pao Gasol of the Lakers on this team? This is really in poor taste!!!!

Have you ever done this in a picture?

Did you know that this is calling most of the world a--holes? You would be considered the rudest person in the world if a picture of you telling everyone you are okay was published in those regions that consider this as offensive and a middle finger!

Ever taken a picture with both your hands in the air with palms facing forward? You realize that in some regions of the world that is symbolic of throwing crap on anyone looking at that picture? You just insulted a good portion of the eastern Mediterranean if that picture got published there.

Is this page offensive to you? If not, why not? It's making fun of a whole class of people!

It all has to do with your point of view on what is and what isn't okay.

You show me a group of people in black face and afro-wigs, with "so and so's family" sign on them. I see people making fun of a guy. I have also seen people dressed as hillbillies. Men dressed as women to make fun of some one. The ONLY reason US culture finds that picture offensive is because it's white's dressed as blacks. If if it was the other way around, almost no one would think anything about it other than it was silly or funny or whatever, not racist!

Are there racists in other culture. Yup! But it's not like a southerner using the N word which has ALWAYS been derogatory in that context. However when black people call each other that it's a term of endearment!

But again, there is no way anyone who has an insular view of the world to know that and put things in proper context.

In the instance of that photo it has been a racist act in the US since the erly part of the 1900's because of the actor who used it in a movie and on stage and the song that was associated with it, had the four guys in the stands ( a couple I would swear are not of Hispanic origin ) outlined their mouths in white paint then theres no doubt the intentions. Most of us are old enough and educated enough to know by looking at the pictures what their intentions were as was much of the world and the formula racing community.

On this you should have noted that first it has nothing to do with wether its a southern US person or someone living in the midwest, the use of the racial slur "nigger" even though it has other actual and older terms is still a racial slur ment in the most hateful way. When any person of African descent living in the US or England uses the slang "nigga" its not the same word in any shape or way however if your not from this culture and you use it then you do so at your own risk as there is an unofficial rule that unless you as the non African are called a "nigga" then you cant use it. Regardless of where you go in the world though the original slur is universaly a slur in almost every country just as other slurs for other cultures is widly known across the globe.

Theres only so much solid ground for arguing the point of what diferent hand gestures stand for and the same goes for words as many are universaly known for their implied intent. If you want we could even go so far as to discuss table manners for varios countries and peoples and what's considered rude in the US is not in other countries and vice versa.

Okay Van, but just remember that spanish speakers are cautioned not to use their native word for the color black when visiting the US. The word sounds too much like the offensive word. Even though that word is used without thought throughout the world.

We have departed from the simple act in the original picture of people pulling their eyes back as a joke and my failed attempt to explain that things are different in different parts of the world. It is impossible for many to see past their own societal preconceptions.

Tony...again, I am going by what I have seen WITH MY OWN TWO EYES when I attend both a Euro League basketball game AND a LIGA soccer game the European fans, especially the Italian fans and the Spanish fans would make Jets and Eagles fans from the NFL look like choir boys singing a church song. We won't even talk about some the Nazi gangs that go to the games either....not 50 or 100 but thousands!

The future of Stargate is in question today, as SCI FI Channel has cancelled the long-running Stargate SG-1, Multichannel News reported today and a GateWorld source has confirmed. The news regrettably follows the airing of the show's milestone two-hundredth episode on Friday.

Stargate Atlantis, meanwhile, has been renewed for a fourth season, with the network hoping to see that the spin-off series can stand alone, according to a source.

Well, there are a couple involving the Antarctic. "Solitudes", S1 E17 (one of my favorites), Then, "Lost City', S7 E21 and E22. Then, in the SGA pilot, "Rising", S1 E1 and E2, it starts out in the Antarctic for about the first 20 minutes or so.

If I understand your question, O'Neill had the Ancient's knowledge in the "Lost City" two-part episode. That was when Anubis attacked Earth and there was a big battle over Antarctica.

Has anyone noticed an FF stutter with 713? I used to be able to hit FF a few times and skip smoothly. After 713 (maybe 712), when I skip forward, there is a definite stutter for as many times as I have pressed FF.

Can anyone check on this and report back? Recorded programs and then press skip forward a few times to see if it's smooth? Normally, it just jumps to the right place after the skips.

I'm getting fabulous picture on Ch. 148 4k, but zero audio with H713. This is with a recorded show (Notre Dame game). Anyone else have this? Audio is fine on every other channel.

My wife mentioned that her remote is acting strange this morning. She hit FF and it went to 15x FF.

Had a customer call recently saying their remote was really acting up, some buttons no longer functioned. Told them to reboot the Hopper....problem fixed.
Wife bought me a t-shirt that has "have you tried turning it off and on again?"

It's a known issue.
For a temporary fix, go into the menu, Audio, and turn Dolby Audio "OFF". You will have PCM stereo audio.

I was able to give the tech ops team some data logs so they could diagnose the problem, and they rolled me back to H708 temporarily. It fixed that issue.

They let me know that they understand what caused the issue, and it will be fixed within a few weeks in a new update.

I guess they will be busy when lots of people start asking for rollbacks to H708 now that you mention that downgrades of software does exist because it will likely fix the OTA Single Tuner and the IR Remote problems in H710-H713.

I think they were more of a transitional receiver bridging the VIPs to the Hopper. They were a PITA to install and were buggy. Personally, I thought at the time that they were the best receiver out there. The versatility of the VIP's with the new Hopper GUI and, by far, the coolest-looking front plate and lighting.

Well if it is because of reliability that wouldnt shock me.I went through 5 or 6 of them in little over 2 years. I loved the Sling when it worked! Saved lots of money having it in the day. That was probably 15 or 16 years ago?

I don't recall that they came out just before hopper, but rather that they came out even before 722. Or could be thinking of 921.

As to the title pf the post, "rare" does not necessarily mean valuable or desirable.

You are thinking of the 921. The 922 was the first DVR with Sling functionality built in (that was eventually disabled along with the Sling Adapter for the 722s and the 1st Hopper because they relied on now-defunct Adobe Flash technology). With the bugginess described by others and the removal of its marquee feature (Sling) the 922 faded into obscurity once the Hopper 2 with built in Sling was released and they finally made the concept into a fully functional product.

I had one, the front panel lighting was cool, the menus were fresh and a lot more modern looking than the ViPs. However, it was very buggy and the Sling functionality just didn't work well - I think it was due to internet speeds at the time. I think I had to pay $40 for the Sling app on my phone iirc.
