New info:
I just received a call from DN Corp. and have found out that the issue the last CSR was referring to was not missed timers but lost recordings. So, now DN is saying that there is no widespread problem with missed timers on their 5XX series receivers.

Also, they are unsure what is causing my problems but said they would get back to me.

I will report back if/when I hear anything. Again, thanks for all the interest,
George -bub

I have a DN508 receiver and it sometimes fails to record timers. This is a random occurence that happens maybe 15% of the time. DN has replaced my 508 about 6 times for this problem.

Now, they are claiming that this is a known issue with all their 50x based receivers and that they are working on it and I just have to wait for new software.

I've looked through this forum and I don't see anybody else complaining about it. What gives? Are you guys experiencing this problem or not?

George -bub

Here is what happens to me, sometimes the unit just fails to turn on. Sometimes, it will turn on but not record. Sometimes it will turn on but record the wrong channel (this rarely has happened). Usually, it will turn on but not record (no record light). When I try to hit record, or change channel or turn the unit off, I get the warning that I have to stop the recording first (even thought it isn't recording). I select ok, but I still can't change channels, turn off the receiver or start recording because the same warning message comes up again. If I go through this process 2 or 3 times, the receiver will freeze up and I have to reboot.

Thanks everybody...

missed recording and efforts to remedy

Howdy all, thanks for the interest in my post.

Of course, the DN techs and myself have been over and over my setup repeatedly. Late last year, I purchased the 6000 and DN replaced every piece of wiring, switch etc... At that time, I had two 501's and used one of them up until I 'went for' the 510 upgrade, and that 501 NEVER missed any recording EVER, and I used it for almost two years. Long story short, DN sent me a 508 instead of a 510 around April/May and ever sinde then, I can't rely on the 508 to record timers.

We have ran a check switch, switched feeds, rebooted, reset, reset to factory defaults, switched outlets etc... Each and every time, with the exception of this last time, DN techs have suggested replacing the faulty 508. Now, they are claiming a known issue that affects ALL 5XX receivers.

I do not use a UPS, but I do use a Monstor power conditioner. We have moved the 508 from that to a standard outlet with no resolution. I've never lost the signal nor sat through a reaquiring sat signal with the 508's, of course the 811 is a different matter, needs to be rebooted all the time.

What happens mostly is the timer will turn the unit on but it won't switch to the proper channel nor will the record light come on. Yet, when trying to change channels, turn off the unit or start a new recording, the warning pops up saying that a recording is in progress (it isn't and nothing shows up in the DVR menu) and I have to agree to stop recording to continue. Even when I accept, I can't continue and another attempt or two will lock the receiver up, forcing a front panel reset.

Also, what happens is that the search function will stop working. Even though the program guide is days in advance, 8 I think, the search function fails with no information available. If I reboot, then I can use search again for a few days.

What is annoying most is that DN is not interested in any input from me regarding what is happening, or what my observations are about why it may be happening.

Again, I was told that this problem is affecting ALL 5XX based DN receivers by a 2nd level DN tech. They KNOW about it and are WORKING on a software fix. Not good news for me that you all have working units. I'm about at my wits end with DN. I've been a loyal customer coming up on 7 years now. I might have to start considering what my options are.

Have a good weekend all,
George -bub

Someone in that office will probably be able to take care of you... enclose all that information you jsut posted so that they understand. Most likely they will give you a credit or a 510... it just depends.

Very sad to say, but Dish CSRs are notorious for making crap up. At times it is unbelievable what customers report they have been told. Because of the frequency at which this seems to happen, you gotta believe that management endorses or at least supports this "creativity".

What you say is true but I know that DISH management does NOT support CSR "creativity". I have spoke to management numerous times about the problem . I have also spoke to DirecTV management about the same problem; it seems to be a something that some "low level" employees seem to think will "enhance" their "career" if they do more than just follow the script. Every time I get "information" that I know isn't correct I make sure that I have the CSR's name and other information so I can let management know about the problem. The ONLY way that this problem will be corrected is to make sure that management is aware of it so they can take corrective action.

The DBS industry isn't the only industry that has this problem. Last month, when I was having problems with my DSL from the local phone company, a person in their repair department blamed my DSL problems on the cable company(???). I didn't even bother to argue with the person, I just called the phone company and asked to speak to a supervisor and told her the problem. She didn't make any excuses for the person, promised that person would get more training and made sure that my problem was looked into.

Three ideas for bub

1) How full is your hard drive. I remember reading on here lots of problems if the hard drive is almost completely full. So how many hours of free space do you have left?

2) If you are having problems with the guide, do you have a good signal from sat 110? (is that the one it gets the guide from or is the sat 119??)

I have seen weird recorder activity on my 510 and my dad's 522 when one sat was not dialed in very well. They both worked and recorded shows but were just flakey when the sat was not really dialed in well.

3) (i just remembered something i else i read here a few months ago) wasn't htere a bunch of bad sw21 switch that lots of folks on here had problems with? maybe you should try another multiswitch (maybe you already have).

Good luck, Hope you can get it worked out DN rules. Jon

3 ideas for bub...

Howdy,
Thanks for your interest in my problem...

My hard drive has 45 hours remaining.
I have Dish 500 and 61.5 wing for HD, my weakest signal is 98%.
I don't use SW21 switches, use a SW64.

I sent a letter to ceo@echostar and received a phone call from someone at the Corp office asking some questions. She seemed rather non-technical but nice. Said she would confer with her techs and 'get back to me'. So far, no return call.

As a side issue: TNT-HD is unwatchable, with the pixelation, jittery video and audio, freezing video (have to power on/off to clear) and the problem with DD decoding, I mean what's the use???

I will report back if I ever hear from DN again...

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

IFixIt has published their Teardown and they had some positive things to say about the iPhone Duo. It still showed some dust ingress into the hinge assembly but seemed otherwise well-sealed.

But with a considerable number of reports of the main screen dying with similar failures, AppleCare+ should be a no-brainer for this phone.

Hello folks, well my luck ran out last week with a nasty thunderstorm and after 39 years here, finally took a hit. Now, the FTA receivers I had for some years worked great until now. Recently picked up a fairly cheap receiver, online, KOQIT and seems to be good, but for the life of me, I cannot get the HDMI output to work with 3 of my Samsung monitors. I can hook it up to my Samsung TV and its HDMI input and it works fine. The 2 receivers I lost also worked fine with them, so am I going crazy? anyone have come across this or have any suggestions? And, since this is a somewhat cheap unit but works, what is everyone out there using for receivers these days? without breaking the bank? I enjoy watching FTA TV, so I will invest more if needed, what is a really good, detailed unit these days. I'm so use to watching a few of them HD channels. Right now I'm down to composite hookups, yuck! Any help or info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Frank

Take the cover off, show me pics of the board of the bad one and also the bottom of the board. I'm an old hardware electronics tech plus a satellite dealer; I fixed a lot of FTA and regular receivers. I may be able to fix it for you. And yes, they got hit by lightning; it's best to email me the pics at diamondsatellite@snet.net or call me at 203-232-8888. I give you a 50-50 chance of fixing it; I do have spare parts. my phone is a fliptop phone

Anybody know how to add "hidden" audio channels like for 101 W Ku or 105W C band on these recvr's? I've exported the database file but don't have anything that will read or edit it.
cyberham
For 105W C, you scan in the Westwood tp normally. Then select the audio channel you want. Not necessary to manually enter. On 101W, you must manually enter.

Seems like I remember that now, with my V9 I manually entered anyway on 105, easier for me to pick the channel later :)

Can you recommend the best to cover all bases. NO BEEPS on certain channels 101w (NEWSMAX ,NEWS NATION), a clock that keeps working STEADY for timed recording ,solid unit with good lifespan. My Amiko died AND my Linkbox has NO Favorites Button and BEEPS on many channels. Picking up 105 west with a NEW SHED IN THE Way with 6 foot Cband ..95 percent quality ...unbelievable.

That's great!

Many people have all sorts of power bricks laying around. Provided the plug fits, and it's the right polarity and same voltage and the same OR higher amps, why not try another one IF the device you want to try it on doesn't seem to work right.

Some people just call them power supplies (which really isn't a good fit in this case), some call them "wall adapters" but it's an external power supply or AC adapter that converts (AC) from a wall outlet into low-voltage (DC) that an electronic device needs to run.

The Westwood One Mux on 105W would likely be receivable, has some good music channels on there. It does scan in, but it's more convenient to manually enter the PIDs, check out Lyngsat for the channels: EchoStar 105/SES 11 at 105.0°W - LyngSat

I use a 10 footer (only C-band dish I have), but it's very strong.

Was curious about timing and carve-outs, via Claude:

Yes, the bill has a few carve-outs and softening provisions:
  • Small manufacturers get extra time. The rule can't be applied to manufacturers that made 40,000 or fewer passenger motor vehicles for sale in the U.S. in 2022, at least not on the same timeline as everyone else — they get extra compliance time. house
  • An "interim" workaround exists. Until the final rule takes effect, automakers can still sell new vehicles without AM radios — they just have to clearly and conspicuously label those vehicles to inform buyers that they lack AM broadcast reception, rather than being barred from selling them outright. senate
  • Sunset clause. The mandate isn't permanent — it comes with a sunset provision of eight years (trimmed down from the ten years originally proposed) so Congress has to revisit it as technology evolves. Radio World
  • Study requirement, not a full carve-out. For self-driving/autonomous vehicles, there's no outright exemption, but the House Energy and Commerce Committee added a requirement that the Department of Transportation study potential safety and innovation issues around AM reception in new vehicles with autonomous driving systems. Radio World
The Senate version (S. 315) is Markey and Cruz's companion bill and carries essentially the same exceptions as the House bill — they're near-identical texts, which is why they've been advancing in parallel. Specifically:
  • Small manufacturer carve-out. Same threshold as the House version: manufacturers that made 40,000 or fewer passenger vehicles for sale in the U.S. in 2022 get more compliance time — most manufacturers would face a 2-to-3-year compliance window, while smaller manufacturers would get at least 4 years. policyrisk
  • Interim labeling option. Same as the House bill: until the DOT's rule takes effect, manufacturers could sell vehicles without AM as long as they clearly label that the vehicle lacks it, and they can't charge extra for AM access once it's required. policyrisk
  • No-fee requirement. AM access has to be standard equipment, not a paid add-on — same as the House version.
One difference worth noting from committee reporting: the Senate Commerce Committee's report on S. 315 found the mandate would have a "minimal impact" on automakers, with the Congressional Budget Office estimating the cost at a few million dollars annually industry-wide, and the law bars automakers from passing that cost on to consumers.

As of now, S. 315 has cleared the Senate Commerce Committee but hasn't had a full Senate floor vote yet — after the House passed its version on September 15, 2026, the Senate received the House-passed bill, read it twice, and placed it on the legislative calendar, where it's awaiting further action. So the two chambers still need to reconcile which version (or a merged one) actually goes to the President. yourNEWS

On timing:

Nothing takes effect yet — the bill still needs to pass the full Senate and get signed into law. But once it's enacted, here's the timeline baked into the bill:
  • Rulemaking deadline: The Secretary of Transportation has to issue the actual rule within 1 year of the bill being signed into law.
  • Rule's effective date: The rule itself then takes effect 2 to 3 years after it's issued.
  • So in practice: For most manufacturers, that's roughly 3 to 4 years after enactment before AM radio is actually required as standard equipment.
  • Small manufacturers (40,000 or fewer vehicles sold in the U.S. in 2022) get extra runway — at least 4 years from enactment.
  • In the meantime: Any new vehicle sold without AM radio during that gap just has to carry clear, conspicuous labeling saying it lacks AM reception — it's not banned outright until the rule kicks in.
  • Sunset clause: Once in force, the mandate itself expires after 8 years, unless Congress acts again to renew it.
So best case, if the Senate passed it quickly and it were signed into law soon, you'd be looking at somewhere around 2029-2030 before the requirement is actually binding on most automakers — and that's assuming no further delays in the legislative process, which given this bill's multi-year history is not a given.

That said, since '08 I have had Sat radio available to me ... I think I have turned on AM 3 or 4 times, just to see if its still there.

Fwiw, if theres a Major disaster or bad weather or whatever, the chances of me finding out about it by going to the AM side of the radio is SLIM and None.
Even FM, I haven't really had on since '13ish, I may turn it on from time to time, just to see if its still there.

While the bye can help the top four teams and those the Cartels would like to protect in the playoff, I think the bye is also about making the Cartel championships mean something. One problem with a playoff is it does diminish the conference title a bit.

Just a couple of weeks ago. Unranked Florida knocked off number 7 texas. Unranked Auburn beat number 1 Georgia.

This week unranked Cincinnati beat number 8 texas Tech. Unranked UCF beat number 2 BYU.

No reason to think similar upsets wont happen in the playoffs where a low seed can upset a higher one.

Correct, you Do get upsets from time to time ....however .
You Don't get teams UPSETTING teams for 5 weeks in a row.

They are trying to make this Basketball and its a far cry from the way that is played.

How long till they go to 32 teams ? Then they will say, well, the NFL is 32 teams, we can make more money that way .... except the NFL is 32 teams, that are a set number of teams and divisions, you don't have that in College ... oh but they will try.

They would have to choose what teams they would want in and thats it.
Hopefully that NEVER happens.

I can see the NCAA going away and the CFP taking that portion over and a Collective Bargaining agreement coming in the not to distant future.

The problem with rankings and playoffs is that they are designed to hype the game and make money. Period.

The only reason that BYU and Texas Tech were upsets is that they were hyped up in the standings in the first place. I love watching BYU and Bear Bachmeier. They are a fun and talented team, but not nearly so strong, fast, big, and skilled as a true top ten team. Does anyone truly believe they could compete with the likes of Georgia, Ohio State, Indiana, Alabama, etc.? Yet, they were ranked above those teams.

Each year, there are 10 to 12 teams who truly could compete for the championship if it depended on winning more than one game in a playoff. Including teams like James Madison, Tulane, BYU, etc. in a playoff has nothing to do with determining a national champion. It's just about money.

I don't know why DISH doesn't just start a streaming version of DISH and then if you can't see the western arc you go with streaming versions and then they could keep customers if they had good internet speeds. I mean Sling TV could be changed to Streaming DISH TV if they wanted since both companies are under Echostar. Then you would still be able to use your ota antenna with Air TV devices like I do with Air TV Anywhere with 4 ota tuners.

Advertisers on SD channels are probably Far and Few, very hard to find, they have very few viewers to watch them.

I watch mostly SD channels (H&I, Start and ION, etc.). There are plenty of advertisers, this time of the year it is mostly Medicare Advantage plans, auto extended warranties and the occasional walk-in-tub. They know who is watching.

Why didn't Charlie end up launching starlink
Because he didn't have a fleet of reusable rockets. Starlink works because SpaceX is able to launch hundreds (thousands?) of their Starlink satellites for what a single geostationary Internet satellite costs to build and launch on a disposable launcher.

But how is it reusable if it's disposable
