Fits in with what I posted yesterday about the "8HD1" test channel. Looks like Dish is getting ready to again experiment with 8 HDs on one TP, at least for E11.

Also, what's with the 110 HDs being added to the eastern arc? I thought they were already there. Perhaps a prelude to the MPEG4 transition on 110.

And let me second the question on Echostar 10 capacity. If there was space for those locals on E10 before, why were they on 148 for so long?

All and all, another ho hum Wednesday uplink. At least next week will bring some HD LiLs.

Guess if I want my HD locals, I can move to the North Pole!

How low can they go? Thats just sad.

When they went from 6 to 7, digiblur arranged a poll - without telling people what had happened - and no one reported worse PQ - some people reported better PQ.

So, they don't make the change unless new encoding software improvements allows it to be done without hurting the PQ.

The fact is their PQ isn't all that great now nor was it when they had 6 per tp or at least not as good when we first got the Vooms and Hdnet was looking excellent. Remember?

Memory is notoriously inaccurate.

When people first saw HD, it was so much better than SD, that all their first viewings seem better in memory.

Nowadays, lots of stuff is in HD, it is not as remarkable.

It's similar to when a director makes a film, and then the studio forces him to change it - for the worse. When the director finally gets to release the improved "director's cut", there is always a group of people who are desperate for the "theatrical version" to be released - because that is one that they remember fondly - perhaps going out on a date that went well, etc.

Unless someone has HD-DVR recordings to compare from years ago, there is no way to know what was simply the impact of seeing HD.

Hmmm, so dropping the bit-rate of video does not affect picture quality. What are you smoking?
long_time_Dish
Well, I will say this:

My archived version of Open Range prior to when HDNet Movies was down-rezzed still looks noticeably better than most HD programming these days.

So, I feel qualified to meet your challenge. :) I'd say it looks, about 25% better than most HD on E* these days. Does that mean that today's HD PQ is terrible? Nope, not at all. It's still quite watchable. But it used to look better...
kstuart

Dropping the bit-rate of video affects picture quality if everything else stays the same.

Dish is constantly updating the encoding software with new improvements that increase the PQ at the same bitrate or allows equal PQ at lesser bitrate.

We see the same thing with MPEG-4 versus MPEG-2, and similar things with newer MPEG-4 encoders versus older MPEG-4 encoders.

PS My own feeling is that I would rather have all the channels I watch in good HD, rather than have most of them in SD, and only 3 or 4 in top quality HD. If I want to see top quality HD, I can always rent a Blu-Ray disk.

Not sure if you been here long enough, but you could find a comparison old and new HD stream for same movies - just search for "HD-Lite". There is real difference, at least visible loss of details.

I think Dish needs to quit trying to "milk a turd" and just wait until they have additional bandwidth to add more channels.

From what I understand reception is TERRIBLE in the North Pole. No matter what channel you watch, you still see nothing but snow!

I'm getting fabulous picture on Ch. 148 4k, but zero audio with H713. This is with a recorded show (Notre Dame game). Anyone else have this? Audio is fine on every other channel.

It's a known issue.
For a temporary fix, go into the menu, Audio, and turn Dolby Audio "OFF". You will have PCM stereo audio.

I was able to give the tech ops team some data logs so they could diagnose the problem, and they rolled me back to H708 temporarily. It fixed that issue.

They let me know that they understand what caused the issue, and it will be fixed within a few weeks in a new update.

I guess they will be busy when lots of people start asking for rollbacks to H708 now that you mention that downgrades of software does exist because it will likely fix the OTA Single Tuner and the IR Remote problems in H710-H713.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Stargate SG-1 cancelled, Atlantis renewed

The future of Stargate is in question today, as SCI FI Channel has cancelled the long-running Stargate SG-1, Multichannel News reported today and a GateWorld source has confirmed. The news regrettably follows the airing of the show's milestone two-hundredth episode on Friday.

Stargate Atlantis, meanwhile, has been renewed for a fourth season, with the network hoping to see that the spin-off series can stand alone, according to a source.

Well, there are a couple involving the Antarctic. "Solitudes", S1 E17 (one of my favorites), Then, "Lost City', S7 E21 and E22. Then, in the SGA pilot, "Rising", S1 E1 and E2, it starts out in the Antarctic for about the first 20 minutes or so.

If I understand your question, O'Neill had the Ancient's knowledge in the "Lost City" two-part episode. That was when Anubis attacked Earth and there was a big battle over Antarctica.
