What do you think is the future of dish network ?

This is an honest question.
I have heard all kind of ghost stories regarding dish network.

They launched a new satellite to add more hd channels, but only for new customers. However my brother just got his brand new dish network account and all he got was two 211 receivers and signals from sat 119 & 110. What are they using the 72.7 and the 77 for ?
My brother gets no smart cards with his brand new system. They say they will come on the mail sometime on the next 90 days or so.
Wouldn't be a lot easier to start installing all the new stuff to all the new customers ?

Then I read all kind of problems with smart card installation, activation and delivery. Who is the Einstein who planned all this ?

What will happen with all those million users that are on their 70's or 80's ? they do not know how to install smart cards. they are used to easy. what should they have to do different ?

Then I read of people from San Diego and south Texas having no reception from satellite 110, and they are told they can switch to sat 72.7 to get the exact same channels but it will not work without the new smart cards. Cards that might take months to get. But also they are told that they will fix sat 110 so everybody will get it back.

Is dish network willing to re aim 13 million+ dishes all over America ?

It looks to me that right now they have too many satellites with duplicate channels, but at the same time even with all those satellites people is having all kind of problems.

Then I read of dish firing tech support people.
Are they nuts !!!
This is only going to get things worse for them !!!

Then I learned they planned to launch a dish network Mexico service, using sat 77. But it was supposed to happen 4 months ago, nothing happens. Not it seems that the 77 sat is no longer going to be used for Mexico. It will be used for America. Don't they have enough satellites already ?

So does anybody knows what will happen in the long run ?

The Murphy laws suggests that in will get worse before it gets better.

DISH's future is looking murky to me. IF they don't get off their butts and add some more national hd and hd locals , they will be left to far behind to ever catch up.

They need to improve the following:

1. ADD MORE hd and hd locals. Make it a one dish solution instead of multiple sat dishes to receive said programming.

2. Fire their advertising agency and find one that can compete with Directv's. Frank whats his name is funny but can't compete with DIRectv's great commercials like the latest one for the Poltergist and the Vacation one with Christie Brinkley.

3. MOVE all Customer service back to the U.S. and use AMERICANS with english as their first language. Nothing worse than trying to understand "Bagdad Bob or Betty " to change something on your account.

4. SIMPLIFY all programming packs & fees and how you get them. It shouldn't take an accounting degree to figure out how to get what you want.

a)Dvr advantage should be easy to add to any programming pack and it should include ALL dvrs covered. So if you want Family pack and dvr advantage so be it, and top 100 +dvr advantage ,top 200 +dvr advantage, top 250 dvr advantage etc.

Same for hd . You should just pay one hd tech fee like Directv charges and you can have all the hd in your programming pack . You shouldn't have to be a geologist to add hd to your programming pack and know the difference between gold , silver, platinum, bronze. This is complicated and the average Joe out there just wants hd . SIMPLIFY THIS !

b)Eliminate all excess dvr fees and you will attract more subs. Your extra fees are killing you and you could make that up by volume of customers added ,rather than piling on excess fees to existing subs. Adversely positive word of mouth by subs will be the best advertising you can get. DISH added all kinds of new subs when they advertised fee less dvrs like the 501/721/921. It is time to return to this ,especially in economic hard times like today.

c) Stop hiking the prices of your additional receiver fees and pay per views. You have the highest fees for both in the satellite business and you advertise that you are the low cost leader in satellite tv. THis is hypocritical and people HATE a person or company that says one thing but their actions say something else. Directv charges 4.99 for additional receivers no matter if they are hd or not. Directv charges 3.99 for pay per views and 4.99 for hd pay per views. DISH charges 4.99 for sd , 5.99 for hd , 6.99 for pre recorded pay per views on DISH's portion of your hard drive. DISH has the highest additional receiver fees too. For sd receivers the price is 6.00 and for hd 7.00 and mean while Directv is still charging 4.99 like always for all receivers.

D) Simplify your sat receivers and eliminate the olders ones and stop supporting all those ancient relics . Did we need a 612 receiver when the 622/722 could do the same thing in single mode? THis is silly and a waste of resources . All you need is a simple hd receiver that can do either hd or sd and an hd dvr that can do hd or sd . WE don't need multiple versions of these receivers . SIMPLIFY THIS and you will save money in the long run. Most people don't care what kind they get as long as it does what they want. We don't need a new model every year like the new car industry. Try adding new feature modules to the existing sat receivers instead and you can still make money without charging the existing subs for a new one every time you add a new feature. The 722k or 922 will have this feature with the add on module for 2 ota tuners. This is the direction I am talking about.

In the end it will be the bean counters who bring down DISH . They will make profit off the backs of their existing subs for a while but in the end they will keep losing new subs and existing subs. A company that never adds to their totals will keep contracting till they go under. Besides when all is said and done their is very little difference between DISH and DIRECTV on pricing. Directv has simplified their programming and fees structure and made it simple to add what you want and take off what you want online and they don't gouge you when you subtract programming. IF it wasn't for DIRECTV's crappy dvrs they would have all the subs right now, including me. . THey have more hd than DISH and they also have more sports and they don't seem to suffer the public fights between the channel providers like DISH does.

IF DISH doesn't do some or all of what I have outlined their future will keep getting worse. THe age of greed is over and the age of financial, fiscal responsibility is coming next year. You can keep operating like a greedy pig who charges for every new fee you can think of and your base of subs will get smaller and smaller till you become irrelavant in the industry. Lets get Back to the basics of what made DISH great and you will find your future as a company. SO lets make 2009 the year that DISH goes "back to the future ."

Dumb question, but can't you hook a wireless network adapter to the 622/722's?

Yeah, you can use a bridge, but they're around $100. You can't just connect a wifi dongle to them right now.

Works in theory but there's limited transponders per satellite, so not too likely unless you like your pixel-count crunched even further. (Which will just result in more whining?)

2. Fire their advertising agency and find one that can compete with Directv's. Frank whats his name is funny but can't compete with DIRectv's great commercials like the latest one for the Poltergist and the Vacation one with Christie Brinkley.

My suggestion was George Carlin, Bernie Mac or Whoopi Goldberg... but Chuck didn't want to dish out the cash. What a surprise?

3. MOVE all Customer service back to the U.S. and use AMERICANS with english as their first language. Nothing worse than trying to understand "Bagdad Bob or Betty " to change something on your account.

CSR's state side cost at range $8-11/hr. Habib costs $.025 a call under three minutes. Not gonna happen. (We're not going to discuss the fact that Charlie already promised this. Charlie likes to promise lots of things.)

4. SIMPLIFY all programming packs & fees and how you get them. It shouldn't take an accounting degree to figure out how to get what you want.

It doesn't take an Accounting degree... Commerce and Finance 4-years though...

a)Dvr advantage should be easy to add to any programming pack and it should include ALL dvrs covered. So if you want Family pack and dvr advantage so be it, and top 100 +dvr advantage ,top 200 +dvr advantage, top 250 dvr advantage etc.

Average Joe will pay for it just as he does now though so...?

b)Eliminate all excess dvr fees and you will attract more subs. Yea... No. This is a minimum $50M revenue gain annually. If you can guarantee Chuck a MINIMUM of that return if the fee is eliminated in additional (and LOYAL) new customers, you might have a prayer. But in an economy and even before where people consider television a luxury; just no. Remember that on top of that $50M you have to prove to Charlie you'll make up for some other way, you have to recover the new customer acquisition costs under your "volume of customers added" or again you're cutting into that $50M. There's no justification to drop this fee, hard times or no.

c) Stop hiking the prices of your additional receiver fees and pay per views. You have the highest fees for both in the satellite business and you advertise that you are the low cost leader in satellite tv. Granny Agnus loves her 111, and it gives her all the new-fangled tele-mavision she could ever want, and you want to turn her off? She pays on time every month, which is more than you can say for 30% of all HD customers... Why turn off the cashflow?

In the end it will be the bean counters who bring down DISH . (Dollars, not beans.) They will make profit off the backs of their existing subs (don't forget employees and retailers) for a while but in the end they will keep losing new subs and existing subs (but more sign up you see). A company that never adds to their totals will keep contracting till they go under. Besides when all is said and done their is very little difference between DISH and DIRECTV on pricing. But...but.... DISH won the J.D. Power and Associates award back in what, '01? IF it wasn't for DIRECTV's crappy dvrs they would have all the subs right now, including me. . Yeah, but look at all the mean things you posted. You're not wanted anymore! Are you kidding? and the age of financial, fiscal responsibility is coming next year Not til Jan 20th. That's still a good 2 1/2 months at millions of direct-to-pocket dollars a month!. You can keep operating like a greedy pig who charges for every new fee you can think of Comcast is the pig. This is more like the sloth. and your base of subs will get smaller and smaller till you become irrelavant in the industry. Dude, I totally split off Echostar because I don't care about DISH anymore. I made my billions. Don't you read Forbes? Lets get Back to the basics of what made DISH great Where's the incentive to do that again? and you will find your future as a company. I wish I am as sharp when I reach my 70's
However think about it, how many people at any age are what I call tech-ignorant ? I mean people who do not even understand how to switch from input 1 to input 2 on their tv sets.
That is my concern. A lot of people will get their new smart cards and they will have a hard time understanding how to simply insert them on the right receiver.

No biggie, its all good. Next time you may want to do a few searches on some topics before you post. Its great that you want to find some answer but you will find that not many on the forums will care for you much if you start a tirade on something without searching for answers first. Its especially worse when you start complaining about something that is totally wrong.

Such is the case nowadays with Dish. We have no positive news for awhile now and its getting stale as there isnt much to talk about. About all we hear these days is how do I get a cheaper 622/722 it seems.

Now in the Hornets and Hurricanes markets we just get the TV promise screen. But Directv still charges sports fee I am assuming.
Luckily my DTV stream package doesn't have a rsn fee. Figure DTV that always says is the leader in sports would have come to an agreement by now.

Greenville-New Bern is $11.99 for MASN (Orioles) and Nationals
Raleigh is $11.99 for MASN and Nationals
Charlotte is $12.99 for BravesVision, MASN, Nationals and Reds

The fee in NC also includes the higher in state rate they have to pay for ACCN. Down in SC the fee is $15.99 as they are also a SEC state.
I'm not sure if they're doing it with those teams, but in some markets they also use the fee to cover the additional cost they have to pay for independents and MyNet stations that picked up full season NHL and NBA rights.

If you go to the TVPromise site, you'll likely be able to get a credit for not getting the Hurricanes and additional Hornets games that air on WITN-D2

Figure DTV that always says is the leader in sports would have come to an agreement by now.
Part of the hold out might be the packaging and price for outer areas like how the Thunder needs sports pack for other states. Hopefully they are also pushing for a guarantee from the teams that they would require whoever wins their local broadcasting rights in 2028 to negotiate with MVPDs. Commercial distribution rights are probably a factor too.

I'm guessing they got a deep discount for the Clippers based on how long it took them to officially announce ClipperVision and their KTLA simulcasts after they were basically handed a multi-year draft death penalty.

The Predators and Pistons channels are using feeds supplied by Scripps Sports

The Heat likely depends on whoever they sign for the Fort Myers DMA, as there's no point in paying a high price for the Heat just for that DMA when WPLG is streaming it for free on their app and website for viewers in the Miami DMA, and they already carry the West Palm Beach station.

One thing these five teams have in common is that they all signed exclusive local streaming rights deals with DAZN, replacing their traditional regional sports networks.

I know the Spurs will have 22 games available OTA on KMYS-TV CW35 in the San Antonio market, but they'll still be available on DAZN as well. The CW35 broadcasts are an additional option, not an exclusive arrangement.

With channel 680 now available, we should be able to get all the Spurs home feeds on NBALP again! (as well as the other teams above of course)

He had the Twins the last 2 years and I saw the Wild screen on 668-1 when I was there a few weeks ago.

Hmmm, I'm not seeing anything like those events in our Hopper 3 guide for tonight or Saturday.🙁

I went into the Tools menu and requested a Guide Update. I'll try looking at it after the update completes.

edit — I now have the 148-01 4KFox events for Saturday, but not anything for 148-02 or 148-03 which don't even show as available channels. I do have 148-04 4KUSA.

Which is what is interesting, I see the 4KFox channel on 148-01 but we're not subscribed to our Locals. So why it's coming in is puzzling. I thought that maybe it was a perk for Dish subscribers for the MLB Postseason.

I set a Timer for the Indiana - Ohio State game on Saturday. I'll take advantage of it while I can.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Well, the bag can't weigh that much, right? But by law food product packaging must display the actual net weight of the product, i.e., the contents of the container, so by any logic, if not law, a store's stated per-ounce cost should reflect that figure. But since there's not any law regulating shelf statements, a store can say whatever it wants without violating any rules. So I guess the answer is more consumer legislation. Or simply caveat emptor.

Well, according to the price per ounce on that first bag of coffee he mentions, that would mean the bag weighed over 6 ounces. That bag does NOT weigh 6 ounces. According to Google, an empty bag weighs half an ounce.

Products sold by the ounce, pound, etc, should always be priced for the product only. Only the shipping weight should include the packaging.

Unless the specific product or its packaging is known at the time of weighing, estimating the tare weight for a PoS system is a tall order.

I'm pretty sure that produce bags can't get any thinner. ;)

You certainly don't want to put unbagged produce on a belt, scale, or in a clerk's hands (gloved or not).

I would think that all the packaging would already be accounted for ... they weigh the container, subtract that from the scale, then add the product , so its weighing the Product only

You would be thinking wrong when it comes to goods that are sold by weight (meat, produce, nails). Those items typically go on the scale wrapped without an associated tare. The weight only excludes the sticker because it hasn't been printed yet.

Thats ridiculous ....

Thats not how Deli does it, I know your talking pre packaged.
They need to CHANGE that.
Jimbo
A pound of Coffee, does that include the package it's in ?

No, a pound of coffee refers strictly to the net weight of the coffee itself (16 ounces), not including the weight of the bag or packaging. [1, 2]
  • Net Weight: Food and coffee sold by weight are required by law to list the net weight on the label, which measures only the contents inside the package. [1, 2]
    • Packaging Weight: The foil bag, valve, and label add extra weight to the total item when you hold it, meaning the gross weight on a scale will be slightly more than 16 ounces.
    • Watch Out for Bag Sizes: Always check the label carefully, as many specialty roasters now sell 12-ounce (three-quarter pound) bags while keeping the price or visual impression similar to a full pound. [1, 2, 3]

The larger discrepancies are likely from a data or sync issue. Digital tags don't cause the error, but they can spread one bad entry across a whole store or region instantly. The small cent differences are probably just rounding in the weight, the price data, or both.

Perhaps only for sliced meat and cheese. Salads and similarly "shifty" or "drippy" items are typically weighed in deli cartons of some sort.

My monster burritos (up to two lbs.) are weighed in their foil jackets or paper mache take-out trays, and the jacket/tray is then "sealed" with the printed label as it comes off the printer.

Precision has to give way to practicality in situations like that.

You mean you were pirating the VCII and entering "Wizard numbers" every month after key change? GI finally resorted to changing out the keys twice as often, then even more often, down to just hours, making it mostly untenable?

When i was a kid, i used to salivate envisioning me having a Cband dish. It wasn't until about 1995, I installed my first Cband dish, and i remember it took me about 2 weeks to get that dish aligned properly.. This was before internet, and i had to call and talk with people on the phone about advice on how to properly tune the dish. I can't remember the receiver, but it had a UHF remote. I had the satellite receiver in the living room, but i ported it to two TV's, one in the living room and one in the bedroom. It was so nice being able to control the receiver with the remote in the bedroom about 40 feet from the living room. I remember watching Rosanne feeds where it would air the entire week in succession. Nice nostalgia.

That is a misnomer. In the old days you subscribed to telephone service. That included the telephone line and one telephone. An extension cost $1 a month extra. So that $14,000 over 42 years was for the service not the leased telephone. There is no way they paid $28 a month for 42 years for a leased telephone.

I know HipKat said that they were working on conversions but we got the official news yesterday right from Dish that starting next month all DMA's will be on the western arc, and all customers will be assigned to that. That's gonna mean a lot of customers around here aren't gonna get Dish unless there are exceptions. Too many mountains and trees.

Years down the road
Looks like Charlie Ergen will never give up satellite TV. The reason Echostar 25 the most poweful DBS satellite ever built at 110 location already. Also Echostar 26 another super satellite on order for 119 orbital location will be ready in 15 months. he will have 110/119 for another 20 years. Dish will be the only satellte company left. The reason for rural areas and some people like satellite easy to operate and change channels in seconds.

I hope these new "most powerful" satellites will mean that DISH can provide every channel that can be sourced in HD in HD. I do not like the fact that two of my favorite channels (Start and H&I) are SD. I was also very disappointed after installation that METV has to be streamed from my internet connection. Finally, I dropped the locals upon seeing that my local CW channel is in blurry letterboxed SD when it has been HD OTA for years.

This piece gets me - the fact that Dish has removed SD channels from satellite completely in the name of "HD upgrades". I pay for satellite TV, not streaming...I don't see why they couldn't leave the SD version of the channels on Satellite then put the HD streaming version like they have for other channels.

Yes, I considered D* as I knew some of my favorite channels had better PQ but too many require moving up to the "Choice" package and incurring the Regional Sports Fee.
I do not have METV or any of the Weigel owned channels here in El Paso.

What about the commercial services? will they keep using single Stacked or DP single/dual LNB's?

At this point one can only ask whether any live ch's are still distributed in SD. Other than maybe "classics" ch's that run only older stuff

I haven't posted in almost 17 years. Over the air, sat, offline, anything-but-the-internet is still one of my avid pursuits. Been playing with offline tv viewing and offline web browsing. I have great appreciations for this site still being here. It's so hard to find public communities that haven't sold out to social media company.

From what I understand, it's just saving a article or whatever, to Save it so you can read it later ....
Unless he's talking something entirely different ... the way I am looking at it, you Still need the Internet to load it originally.
